1 Do not boast thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.2 Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, a stranger, and not thine own lips.3 Heavy is a stone, and weighty is sand,but, the vexation of a fool, is heavier than both.4 The cruelty of rage, and the overflow of anger! But who can stand before, jealousy?5 Better is a rebuke that is open, than love carefully concealed.6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but lavished are the kisses of an enemy.7 The surfeited soul, trampleth upon droppings from the comb, but, to the hungry soul, every bitter thing, is sweet.8 As a bird wandering from her nest, so, is a man wandering from his place.9 Oil and perfume, rejoice the heart, the sweetness of ones friend, more than fragrant wood.10 Thine own friend and thy fathers friend, do not thou forsake; but, the house of thy brother, do not enter, in thy day of calamity, Better a neighbour near, than a brother far off.11 Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart, that I may answer him that reproacheth me in a matter.12 A prudent man, seeth calamityhe hideth himself, the simple, pass onthey suffer.13 Take a mans garment when he hath become pledge for stranger, then, for a female unknown, accept him as surety.14 He that blesseth his friend, with a loud voice, in the morning early, a reproach, shall it be reckoned to him.15 A continuous dripping on a day of downpour, and a contentious wife, are alike:16 He that hideth her, hideth the wind, and, perfume, his right hand may proclaim.17 Let, iron, by iron, become sharp, and let, a man, sharpen the face of his friend.18 He that guardeth the fig-tree, shall eat the fruit thereof, and, he that watcheth over his master, shall he honoured.19 As in water, face20 Hades and destruction, are not satisfied, and, the eyes of a man, are not satisfied.21 Fining pot for silver, and crucible for gold, and, a man,22 Though thou pound a fool in a mortar, amidst grain, with a pestle, his folly, will not depart from him.23 Note well, the appearance of thy flock, apply thy mind to thy herds;24 For, not age-abiding, are riches, nor is the diadem, from generation to generation:25 The grass, is taken away, and the young shoot, showeth itself, and the herbage of the mountains, is gathered;26 There are, lambs, for thy clothing, and, for the price of thy field, there are he-goats;27 With, enough goats-milk, for thy foodfor the food of thy household, and, a maintenance, for thy maidens.

1 Não presumas do dia de amanhã, porque não sabes o que produzirá o dia. 2 Louve-te o estranho, e não a tua boca, o estrangeiro, e não os teus lábios. 3 Pesada é a pedra, e a areia também; mas a ira do insensato é mais pesada do que elas ambas. 4 Cruel é o furor e a impetuosa ira, mas quem parará perante a inveja? 5 Melhor é a repreensão aberta do que o amor encoberto. 6 Fiéis são as feridas feitas pelo que ama, mas os beijos do que aborrece são enganosos. 7 A alma farta pisa o favo de mel, mas à alma faminta todo amargo é doce. 8 Qual ave que vagueia longe do seu ninho, tal é o homem que anda vagueando longe do seu lugar. 9 O óleo e o perfume alegram o coração; assim a doença do amigo, com o conselho cordial. 10 Não abandones o teu amigo, nem o amigo de teu pai, nem entres na casa de teu irmão no dia da tua adversidade; melhor é o vizinho perto do que o irmão longe. 11 Sê sábio, filho meu, e alegra o meu coração, para que tenha alguma coisa que responder àquele que me desprezar. 12 O avisado vê o mal e esconde-se; mas os simples passam e sofrem a pena. 13 Quando alguém fica por fiador do estranho, toma-lhe tu a sua roupa e penhora-o pela estranha. 14 O que bendiz ao seu amigo em alta voz, madrugando pela manhã, por maldição se lhe contará. 15 O gotejar contínuo no dia de grande chuva e a mulher rixosa, um e outro são semelhantes. 16 Aquele que a contivesse, conteria o vento; e a sua destra acomete o óleo. 17 Como o ferro com o ferro se aguça, assim o homem afia o rosto do seu amigo. 18 O que guarda a figueira comerá do seu fruto; e o que vela pelo seu senhor será honrado. 19 Como na água o rosto corresponde ao rosto, assim o coração do homem ao homem. 20 O inferno e a perdição nunca se fartam, e os olhos do homem nunca se satisfazem. 21 O crisol é para a prata, e o forno, para o ouro, e o homem é provado pelos louvores. 22 Ainda que pisasses o tolo com uma mão de gral entre grãos de cevada pilada, não se iria dele a sua estultícia. 23 Procura conhecer o estado das tuas ovelhas; põe o teu coração sobre o gado. 24 Porque as riquezas não duram para sempre; e duraria a coroa de geração em geração? 25 Quando se mostrar a erva, e aparecerem os renovos, então, ajunta as ervas dos montes. 26 Os cordeiros serão para te vestires, e os bodes, para o preço do campo. 27 E haverá bastante leite de cabras para o teu sustento, para sustento da tua casa e para sustento das tuas criadas.
