Du ska inte offra åt Herren din Gud något djur av nöt eller småboskap som har en defekt*17:1djur … som har en defektOfferdjuren skulle vara felfria, en förebild till Kristus, "ett lamm utan fel eller brist" (1 Petr 1:19). Profeten Malaki tillrättavisade folket för brott mot detta bud (Mal 1:13f). eller annat fel, för sådant är avskyvärt för Herren din Gud.

2 *5 Mos 13:6f. Om en man eller kvinna hos dig i någon av städerna som Herren din Gud ger dig, visar sig göra något som är ont i Herren din Guds ögon, genom att överträda hans förbund, 3 och mot min befallning går bort och tjänar andra gudar och tillber dem eller tillber solen, månen eller himlens hela härskara*17:3himlens hela härskaraStjärnorna, som också symboliserade änglamakter (jfr Job 38:7). Himlakroppar tillbads bland hednafolken (4:19, Job 31:26f) men Bibeln betonar att de är skapade av Gud (1 Mos 1:16, Ps 8:4)., 4 och det blir berättat för dig och du får höra om det, ska du noga undersöka saken. Först ska vittnenas hand lyftas mot honom för att döda honom och sedan hela folkets hand. Du ska skaffa bort det onda från dig.

8 *5 Mos 21:5, 2 Krön 19:10f. Om det i något fall blir för svårt för dig att döma, det kan gälla ett dråp, en rättsfråga, ett misshandelsbrott eller något annat som kan orsaka tvist inom dina portar, då ska du bryta upp och bege dig till den plats som Herren din Gud utväljer 9 *Mal 2:7. och gå till de levitiska prästerna och till den som på den tiden är domare. Dem ska du fråga till råds och de ska meddela dig vad som är rätt. 10 Du ska göra det de meddelar dig på den plats som Herren utväljer, och du ska noggrant följa allt som de lär dig. 11 Efter den lag de undervisar dig i och efter den dom de avkunnar för dig ska du handla. Du ska inte vika av från de ord de meddelar, varken åt höger eller åt vänster.

12 Men om någon handlar i sådant övermod att han varken vill lyssna till prästen, som står där och gör tjänst inför Herren din Gud, eller till domaren, då ska den mannen dö. Du ska skaffa bort det onda från Israel. 13 Allt folket ska höra det och frukta och aldrig mer vara övermodiga.

14 *1 Sam 8:5f. När du kommer in i det land som Herren din Gud ger dig och tar det i besittning och bor där och du säger: "Jag vill sätta en kung över mig*17:14sätta en kung över migKungadömet började med kung Saul på 1000-talet f Kr (1 Sam 8-12)., som alla andra folk omkring mig", 15 så ska du sätta till kung över dig den som Herren din Gud utväljer. En av dina bröder ska du sätta till kung över dig. Du får inte sätta en främling över dig, en som inte är din broder. 16 *1 Kung 10:26, 28, Jes 31:1f. Men han får inte skaffa sig många hästar och inte sända sitt folk tillbaka till Egypten för att skaffa många hästar, för Herren har sagt till er: "Ni ska aldrig mer vända tillbaka denna väg." 17 *1 Kung 10:21, 27, 11:1f. Han får inte heller skaffa sig många hustrur, för att hans hjärta inte ska avfalla, och han ska inte skaffa sig mycket silver och guld.*17:16finte skaffa sig många hästar … många hustrur … mycket silver och guldKung Salomo föll i synd genom att bryta mot dessa bud (1 Kung 10:26f). Hästar användes huvudsakligen för militära ändamål (Ps 33:17, Sak 9:10).

18 *2 Kung 22:10f. När han sitter på sin kungatron ska han låta göra sig en avskrift av denna lag enligt den bokrulle som finns hos de levitiska prästerna. 19 *Jos 1:7f. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.

8 If there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose; 9 And thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days, and enquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment: 10 And thou shalt do according to the sentence, which they of that place which the LORD shall choose shall shew thee; and thou shalt observe to do according to all that they inform thee: 11 According to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee, and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee, thou shalt do: thou shalt not decline from the sentence which they shall shew thee, to the right hand, nor to the left. 12 And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.*17.12 and will…: Heb. not to hearken 13 And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.

14 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me; 15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. 17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. 18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: 20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
