Symmetrin med fjorton släktled rimmar nämligen med det hebreiska talvärdet för "David" (jfr not till 1:1). Det var inte ovanligt att släkttavlor förkortades (jfr t ex Esra 7:1-5), eftersom ordet "far" också kan användas om en förfader (jfr Matt 3:9). från Abraham till David, fjorton led från David till fångenskapen i Babylon och fjorton led från fångenskapen i Babylon till Kristus.

Trolovning ingicks normalt i tonåren, och redan vid detta stadium kunde otrohet bestraffas med döden (5 Mos 22:23f). med Josef, men innan de hade varit tillsammans visade det sig att hon var havande genom den helige Ande. 19 Hennes man Josef var rättfärdig och ville inte dra skam över henne*1:19ville inte dra skam över henneGenom att anklaga henne offentligt för otrohet., och därför beslöt han att skilja sig från henne i hemlighet.

20 Men när han funderade över detta, då visade sig en Herrens ängel för honom i en dröm och sade: "Josef, Davids son! Var inte rädd för att ta till dig Maria som din hustru, för barnet i henne har blivit till genom den helige Ande. 21 *Ps 130:8, Luk 1:31, 2:21, Apg 4:12, 10:43. Hon ska föda en son, och du ska ge honom namnet Jesus*1:21JesusHebr. Jeshúa (kortform av Jehoshúa = Josua), som betyder "Herrens frälsning"., för han ska frälsa sitt folk från deras synder."

22 Allt detta hände för att det som Herren hade sagt genom profeten skulle uppfyllas: 23 *Jes 8:8, 10.Se, jungfrun ska bli havande och föda en son, och man ska ge honom namnet Immanuel. Det betyder: Gud med oss.*1:23 Jes 7:14.

24 När Josef vaknade upp ur sömnen, gjorde han som Herrens ängel hade befallt och tog sin hustru till sig. 25 *Luk 2:21. Men han rörde henne inte förrän hon hade fött en son. Och han gav honom namnet Jesus.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
