1 Digo, pois: Porventura rejeitou Deus ao seu povo? De modo nenhum; porque eu também sou israelita, da descendência de Abraão, da tribo de Benjamim.2 Deus não rejeitou ao seu povo que ele antes conheceu. Não sabeis o que a Escritura diz de Elias, como ele insta com Deus contra Israel?3 Senhor, mataram os teus profetas, derrubaram os teus altares, e eu fiquei só, e procuram tirar-me a vida.4 Mas que lhe disse a resposta divina? Eu tenho reservado para mim sete mil homens, os quais não dobraram o joelho a Baal.5 Do mesmo modo, pois, ainda no tempo presente, há um resto segundo a eleição da graça;6 mas se é pela graça, já não é pelas obras, doutra maneira a graça já não é graça.7 Pois que? O que Israel busca, isso não tem conseguido, mas a eleição o conseguiu; e os mais foram endurecidos,8 como está escrito: Deu-lhes Deus um espírito de torpor, olhos para não verem e ouvidos para não ouvirem até o dia de hoje.9 Davi disse: A sua mesa se lhes torne em laço, em armadilha, Em tropeço e em retribuição:10 Os olhos se lhes escureçam para não verem, E tu encurva-lhes sempre as costas.11 Digo, pois: Porventura tropeçaram para que caíssem? De modo nenhum; mas pela transgressão deles veio a salvação aos gentios, para incitá-los à emulação.12 Ora se a sua transgressão é a riqueza do mundo, e o seu abatimento a riqueza dos gentios, quanto mais a sua plenitude.13 Falo, porém, a vós que sois gentios. Visto, pois, que eu sou apóstolo dos gentios, glorifico o meu ministério,14 para ver se de algum modo posso incitar à emulação os da minha raça, e salvar alguns deles.15 Pois se a rejeição deles é a reconciliação do mundo, que será a sua admissão, senão a vida dentre os mortos?16 Mas se as primícias são santas, também a massa o é; e se a raiz é santa, também os ramos o são.17 Porém se alguns dos ramos foram quebrados, e tu, sendo zambujeiro, foste enxertado entre eles, e te tornaste participante com eles da raiz e da seiva da oliveira,18 não te glories contra os ramos; porém se te gloriares, não és tu o que sustentas a raiz, mas a raiz a ti.19 Dirás, pois: Alguns ramos foram quebrados, para que eu fosse enxertado.20 Bem; pela sua incredulidade foram quebrados, mas tu pela tua fé estás firme.21 Não te ensoberbeças, mas teme; porque se Deus não poupou os ramos naturais, não te poupará a ti.22 Notai, pois, a bondade e a severidade de Deus: severidade para com aqueles que caíram, mas bondade de Deus para contigo, se permaneceres nessa bondade; doutra maneira também tu serás cortado.23 Eles também, se não permanecerem na sua incredulidade, serão enxertados; pois Deus é poderoso para os enxertar de novo.24 Se tu foste cortado do natural zambujeiro, e contra a natureza foste enxertado em boa oliveira, quanto mais não serão enxertados na sua própria oliveira aqueles que são ramos naturais?25 Pois não quero, irmãos, que ignoreis este mistério, para que não sejais sábios em vós mesmos, que o endurecimento veio em parte a Israel, até que haja entrado a plenitude dos gentios;26 assim todo o Israel será salvo, como está escrito: Virá de Sião o Libertador, Ele apartará de Jacó a impiedade.27 Esta é a minha aliança com eles, Quando eu tirar os seus pecados.28 Quanto ao Evangelho, eles são inimigos por vossa causa; mas quanto à eleição, são amados por causa de seus pais;29 porque dos dons e da sua vocação Deus não se arrepende.30 Assim como vós em outro tempo fostes desobedientes a Deus, mas agora haveis alcançado misericórdia pela desobediência deles;31 assim também estes agora foram desobedientes, para que, pela vossa misericórdia, eles agora também alcancem misericórdia.32 Pois Deus encerrou a todos na desobediência, para usar com todos de misericórdia.33 Ó profundidade das riquezas, da sabedoria e da ciência de Deus! quão inescrutáveis são os seus juízos e quão impenetráveis os seus caminhos!34 Pois quem conheceu a mente do Senhor? ou quem se fez o seu conselheiro?35 ou quem lhe deu primeiro, para que lhe seja retribuído?36 Pois dele, por ele e para ele são todas as coisas; a ele seja dada a glória para sempre. Amém.

1 So I ask, "God has not rejected his people, has he?" Of course not! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin.2 God has not rejected his people whom he chose long ago. Don't you know what the Scripture says in the story about Elijah, when he pleads with God against Israel?3 "Lord, they have killed your prophets and demolished your altars. I am the only one left, and they are trying to take my life."4 But what was the divine reply to him? "I have reserved for myself 7,000 people who have not knelt to worship Baal."5 So it is at the present time: there is a remnant, chosen by grace.6 But if this is by grace, then it is no longer on the basis of works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.7 What, then, does this mean? It means that Israel failed to obtain what it was striving for, but those who were chosen obtained it. However, the rest were hardened.8 As it is written, "To this day God has given them a spirit of deep sleep.Their eyes do not see, and their ears do not hear."9 And David says, "Let their table become a snare and a trap,a stumbling block and a punishment for them.10 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,and keep their backs forever bent."11 And so I ask, "They have not stumbled so as to fall, have they?" Of course not! On the contrary, because of their stumbling, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make the Jews jealous.12 Now if their stumbling means riches for the world, and if their fall means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!13 I am speaking to you Gentiles. Because I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I am glorifying my ministry14 in the hope that I can make my people jealous and save some of them.15 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?16 If the first part of the dough is holy, so is the whole batch. If the root is holy, so are the branches.17 Now if some of the branches have been broken off, and you, a wild olive branch, have been grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree,18 do not boast about being better than the other branches. If you boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.19 Then you will say, "Branches were cut off so that I could be grafted in."20 That's right! They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you remain only because of faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid!21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he certainly will not spare you either.22 Consider, then, the kindness and severity of God: his severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness toward you—if you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you too will be cut off.23 If the Jews do not persist in their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, because God is able to graft them in.24 After all, if you were cut off from what is naturally a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much easier it will be for these natural branches to be grafted back into their own olive tree!25 For I do not want you to be ignorant of this secret, brothers, so that you will not claim to be wiser than you are. A partial hardening has come on Israel until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.26 In this way, all Israel will be saved. As it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion;he will remove ungodliness from Jacob.27 This is my covenant with themwhen I take away their sins."28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake, but as far as election is concerned, they are loved because of their ancestors.29 For God's gifts and calling never change.30 For just as you disobeyed God in the past but now have received his mercy because of their disobedience,31 in order they too have disobeyed in the present so that they may receive mercy because of the mercy shown to you.32 For God has locked all people in the prison of their own disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.33 O how deep are God's riches, wisdom, and knowledge! How impossible to explain his judgments or to understand his ways!34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord?Or who has become his adviser?35 Who has given him somethingonly to have him pay it back?"36 For all things are from him, by him, and for him. Glory belongs to him forever! Amen.
