1 And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.3 And they said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of disgrace; for the sons have come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.4 It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard: therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant who is left.5 So the slaves of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.6 And Isaiah said to them, Thus you{+} will say to your{+} master, Thus says Yahweh, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the attendants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.7 Look, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear [some] news, and will return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.9 And he heard it said concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He has come out to fight against you. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,10 Thus you{+} will speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.11 Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them completely: and will you be delivered?12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.15 And Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying,16 O Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, who sits [above] the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.17 Incline your ear, O Yahweh, and hear; open your eyes, O Yahweh, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God.18 Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries,19 and have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of man's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.20 Now therefore, O Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,22 this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.23 Whom have you defied and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? [Even] against the Holy One of Israel.24 By your slaves you have defied the Lord, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir-trees; and I will enter into its farthest height, its forest park;25 I have dug and drank water, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.26 Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, which is blighted before the east wind.28 But I know your rising up and your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in, and your raging against me.29 Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.30 And this will be the sign to you: you{+} will eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow{+}, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.31 And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.32 For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion those who will escape. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will perform this.33 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.34 By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he will not come to this city, says Yahweh.35 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my slave David's sake.36 And the angel of Yahweh went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians 185,000; and when men arose early in the morning, look, these were all dead bodies.37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.38 And it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

1 Quando o rei Ezequias soube disso, rasgou suas vestes, vestiu pano de saco e entrou no templo do Senhor.2 Depois enviou o administrador do palácio, Eliaquim, o secretário Sebna e os chefes dos sacerdotes, todos vestidos de pano de saco, ao profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz,3 com esta mensagem: "Assim diz Ezequias: Hoje é dia de angústia, de repreensão e de vergonha, como quando uma criança está a ponto de nascer e não há forças para dá-la à luz.4 Talvez o Senhor, o seu Deus, ouça as palavras do comandante de campo, a quem o seu senhor, o rei da Assíria, enviou para zombar do Deus vivo. E que o Senhor, o seu Deus, o repreenda pelas palavras que ouviu. Portanto, ore pelo remanescente que ainda sobrevive".5 Quando os oficiais do rei Ezequias vieram a Isaías,6 este lhes respondeu: "Digam a seu senhor: Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Não tenha medo das palavras que você ouviu, das blasfêmias que os servos do rei da Assíria falaram contra mim.7 Porei nele um espírito para que, quando ouvir uma certa notícia, volte à sua própria terra, e ali farei com que seja morto à espada’ ".8 Quando o comandante de campo soube que o rei da Assíria havia partido de Láquis, retirou-se e encontrou o rei lutando contra Libna.9 Ora, Senaqueribe foi informado de que Tiraca, o rei da Etiópia, saíra para lutar contra ele. Quando soube disso, enviou mensageiros a Ezequias com esta mensagem:10 "Digam a Ezequias, rei de Judá: Não deixe que o Deus no qual você confia o engane quando diz: ‘Jerusalém não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria’.11 Com certeza você ouviu o que os reis da Assíria têm feito a todas as nações, e como as destruíram por completo. E você acha que se livrará?12 Acaso os deuses das nações que foram destruídas pelos meus antepassados os livraram: os deuses de Gozã, de Harã, de Rezefe e dos descendentes de Éden, que estavam em Telassar?13 Onde estão o rei de Hamate, o rei de Arpade, o rei da cidade de Sefarvaim, de Hena e de Iva? "14 Ezequias recebeu a carta das mãos dos mensageiros e a leu. Então subiu ao templo do Senhor, apresentou-a diante do Senhor15 e orou:16 "Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel, cujo trono está entre os querubins, só tu és Deus sobre todos os reinos da terra. Tu fizeste os céus e a terra.17 Dá ouvidos, Senhor, e ouve; abre os teus olhos, Senhor, e vê; escuta todas as palavras que Senaqueribe enviou para insultar o Deus vivo.18 "É verdade, Senhor, que os reis assírios fizeram de todas essas nações e de seus territórios um deserto.19 Atiraram os deuses delas no fogo e os destruíram, pois em vez de deuses, não passam de madeira e pedra, moldados por mãos humanas.20 Agora, Senhor nosso Deus, salva-nos das mãos dele, para que todos os reinos da terra saibam que só tu, Senhor, és Deus".21 Então Isaías, filho de Amoz, enviou uma mensagem a Ezequias: "Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: ‘Ouvi a sua oração acerca de Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria.22 Esta é a palavra que o Senhor falou contra ele: " ‘A virgem cidade de Sião despreza e zomba de você. A cidade de Jerusalém meneia a cabeça enquanto você foge.23 De quem você zombou e contra quem blasfemou? Contra quem você ergueu a voz e, contra quem levantou seu olhar arrogante? Contra o Santo de Israel!24 Sim, você insultou ao Senhor por meio dos seus mensageiros, dizendo: "Com carros sem conta subi aos mais elevados e inacessíveis cumes do Líbano. Derrubei os seus cedros mais altos, os seus melhores pinheiros. Entrei em suas regiões mais remotas, ao melhor de suas florestas.25 Em terras estrangeiras cavei poços e bebi água. Com as solas dos meus pés sequei todos os riachos do Egito".26 " ‘Você não soube que há muito eu já o havia ordenado que desde os dias da antigüidade eu o havia planejado? Agora eu o executo, e faço você transformar cidades fortificadas em montões de pedra.27 Os seus habitantes, já sem forças, desanimam envergonhados. São como pastagens, como brotos tenros e verdes, como capim no terraço, queimado antes de crescer.28 " ‘Eu, porém, sei onde você está quando sai e quando retorna, e como você se enfurece contra mim.29 Sim, contra mim você se enfurece, o seu atrevimento chegou aos meus ouvidos; por isso, porei o meu anzol em seu nariz e o meu freio em sua boca, e o farei voltar pelo caminho por onde veio.30 " ‘A você, Ezequias, darei este sinal: " ‘Neste ano vocês comerão do que crescer por si, e no próximo o que daquilo brotar. Mas no terceiro ano semeiem e colham, plantem vinhas e comam o seu fruto.31 Mais uma vez um remanescente da tribo de Judá lançará raízes na terra e encherão de frutos os seus ramos.32 De Jerusalém sairão sobreviventes e um remanescente do monte Sião. O zelo do Senhor dos Exércitos realizará isso’.33 "Por isso assim diz o Senhor acerca do rei da Assíria: " ‘Ele não entrará nesta cidade e não atirará aqui uma flecha sequer. Não virá diante dela com escudo nem construirá rampas de cerco contra ela.34 Pelo caminho por onde veio voltará; não entrará nesta cidade’, declara o Senhor.35 " ‘Eu defenderei esta cidade e a salvarei, por amor de mim e por amor de Davi, meu servo! ’ "36 Então o anjo do Senhor saiu e matou cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens no acampamento assírio. Quando o povo se levantou na manhã seguinte, só havia cadáveres!37 Assim Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, fugiu do acampamento, voltou para Nínive e lá ficou.38 Certo dia, quando adorava no templo de seu deus Nisroque, seus filhos Adrameleque e Sarezer o feriram à espada, e fugiram para a terra de Ararate. E seu filho Esar-Hadom foi o seu sucessor.
