1 But there will be no gloom to her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time he has made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, on them light has shined.3 You have multiplied the nation, you have increased their joy: they joy before you according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.5 For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, will be for burning, for fuel of fire.6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulder: and his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from now on even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will perform this.8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it has fallen on Israel.9 And all the people will know, [even] Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart,10 The bricks have fallen, but we will build with cut stone; the sycamores are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.11 Therefore Yahweh will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,12 the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they will devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.13 Yet the people haven't turned to him who struck them, neither have they sought Yahweh of hosts.14 Therefore Yahweh will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day.15 The elder and the honorable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.16 For those who lead this people cause them to err; and those who are led of them are destroyed.17 Therefore the Lord will not show mercy over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is profane and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.18 For wickedness burns as the fire; it devours the briers and thorns; yes, it kindles in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.19 Through the wrath of Yahweh of hosts is the land darkened; and the people are as the fuel of fire: no man spares his brother.20 And one will snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he will eat on the left hand, and they will not be satisfied: they will eat every man the flesh of his own arm:21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together will be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

1 Contudo, não haverá mais escuridão para os que estavam aflitos. No passado ele humilhou a terra de Zebulom e de Naftali, mas no futuro honrará a Galiléia dos gentios, o caminho do mar, junto ao Jordão.2 O povo que caminhava em trevas viu uma grande luz; sobre os que viviam na terra da sombra da morte raiou uma luz.3 Fizeste crescer a nação e aumentaste a sua alegria; eles se alegram diante de ti como os que se regozijam na colheita, como os que exultam quando dividem os bens tomados na batalha.4 Pois, tu destruíste o jugo que os oprimia, a canga que estava sobre os seus ombros, e a vara de castigo do seu opressor, como no dia da derrota de Midiã.5 Pois, toda bota de guerreiro usada em combate e toda veste revolvida em sangue serão queimadas, como lenha no fogo.6 Porque um menino nos nasceu, um filho nos foi dado, e o governo está sobre os seus ombros. E ele será chamado Maravilhoso Conselheiro, Deus Poderoso, Pai Eterno, Príncipe da Paz.7 Ele estenderá o seu domínio, e haverá paz sem fim sobre o trono de Davi e sobre o seu reino, estabelecido e mantido com justiça e retidão, desde agora e para sempre. O zelo do Senhor dos Exércitos fará isso.8 O Senhor enviou uma mensagem contra Jacó, e ela atingiu Israel.9 Todo o povo ficará sabendo, tanto Efraim como os habitantes de Samaria, que dizem com orgulho e arrogância de coração:10 "Os tijolos caíram, mas nós reconstruiremos com pedras lavradas; as figueiras bravas foram derrubadas, mas nós as substituiremos por cedros".11 Mas o Senhor fortaleceu os adversários de Rezim para atacá-los e incitou contra eles os seus inimigos.12 Os arameus do leste e os filisteus do oeste devoraram Israel, escancarando a boca. Apesar disso tudo, a ira divina não se desviou; sua mão continua erguida.13 Mas o povo não voltou para aquele que os feriu, nem buscou o Senhor dos Exércitos.14 Por essa razão o Senhor corta de Israel tanto a cabeça como a cauda, tanto a palma como o junco, num único dia;15 as autoridades e os homens de destaque são a cabeça, os profetas que ensinam mentiras são a cauda.16 Aqueles que guiam este povo o desorientam, e aqueles que são guiados deixam-se induzir ao erro.17 Por isso o Senhor não terá nos jovens motivo de alegria, nem terá piedade dos órfãos e das viúvas, pois todos são hipócritas e perversos, e todos falam loucuras. Apesar disso tudo, a ira dele não se desviou; sua mão continua erguida.18 Porque a impiedade queima como fogo; consome roseiras bravas e espinheiros, põe em chamas os matagais da floresta, fazendo nuvens de fumaça.19 Pela ira do Senhor dos Exércitos a terra será ressecada, e o povo será como lenha no fogo; ninguém poupará seu irmão.20 À direita devorarão, mas ainda estarão com fome; à esquerda comerão, mas não ficarão satisfeitos. Cada um comerá a carne do seu próprio irmão.21 Manassés contra Efraim, Efraim contra Manassés, e juntos eles se voltarão contra Judá. Apesar disso tudo, a ira divina não se desviou; sua mão continua erguida.
