1 This is what Yahweh said, Go, and buy a potter's earthen bottle, and [take] of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;2 and go forth to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you;3 and say, Hear{+} the word of Yahweh, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, Look, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears will tingle.4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods, that they didn't know, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with innocent blood,5 and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt-offerings to Baal; which I didn't command, nor speak it, neither did it come into my mind:6 therefore, look, the days come, says Yahweh, that this place will no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter.7 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life: and their dead bodies I will give to be food for the birds of the heavens, and for the beasts of the earth.8 And I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.9 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they will eat every one the flesh of his fellow man, in the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, will distress them.10 Then you will break the bottle in the sight of the men who go with you,11 and will say to them, Thus says Yahweh of hosts: Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, that can't be made whole again; and they will bury in Topheth, until there is no place to bury.12 Thus I will do to this place, says Yahweh, and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth:13 and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, will be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink-offerings to other gods.14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Yahweh's house, and said to all the people:15 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, Look, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.

1 Assim diz o Senhor: "Vá comprar um vaso de barro de um oleiro. Leve com você alguns líderes do povo e alguns sacerdotes2 e vá em direção ao vale de Ben-Hinom, perto da entrada da porta dos Cacos. Proclame ali as palavras que eu lhe disser.3 Diga: ‘Ouçam a palavra do Senhor, reis de Judá e habitantes de Jerusalém. Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, Deus de Israel: Trarei desgraça tal sobre este lugar que fará retinir os ouvidos daqueles que ouvirem isso.4 Porque eles me abandonaram e profanaram este lugar, oferecendo sacrifícios a deuses estranhos, que nem eles nem seus antepassados nem os reis de Judá conheceram; e encheram este lugar com o sangue de inocentes.5 Construíram nos montes os altares dedicados a Baal, para queimarem os seus filhos como holocaustos oferecidos a Baal, coisa que não ordenei, da qual nunca falei nem jamais me veio à mente.6 Por isso, certamente vêm os dias, declara o Senhor, em que não mais chamarão este lugar Tofete ou vale de Ben-Hinom, mas vale da Matança.7 " ‘Esvaziarei neste lugar os planos de Judá e de Jerusalém: eu os farei morrer pela espada perante os seus inimigos, pelas mãos daqueles que os perseguem; e darei os seus cadáveres como comida para as aves e os animais.8 Farei com que esta cidade fique deserta e seja tema de zombaria. Todos os que por ela passarem ficarão chocados e zombarão de todos os seus ferimentos.9 Eu farei com que comam a carne dos seus filhos e das suas filhas; e cada um comerá a carne do seu próximo, por causa do sofrimento que lhes infligirão durante o cerco feito pelos inimigos, os quais procuram tirar-lhes a vida’.10 "Depois quebre o vaso de barro diante dos homens que o acompanharam,11 e diga-lhes: ‘Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Assim como se quebra o vaso de oleiro, que não pode ser mais restaurado, quebrarei este povo e esta cidade, e os mortos em Tofete serão sepultados até que não haja mais lugar.12 Assim farei a este lugar e aos seus habitantes", declara o Senhor, "tornarei esta cidade como Tofete.13 As casas de Jerusalém e os palácios reais de Judá serão profanados, como este lugar de Tofete: todas as casas em cujos terraços queimaram incenso a todos os corpos celestes, e derramaram ofertas de bebidas aos seus deuses estrangeiros’ ".14 Jeremias, voltou então de Tofete para onde o Senhor o mandara profetizar e, entrando no pátio do templo do Senhor, disse a todo o povo:15 "Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: ‘Ouçam! Trarei sobre esta cidade, e sobre todos os povoados ao redor, todas as desgraças contra eles anunciadas, porque se obstinaram e não quiseram obedecer às minhas palavras’ ".
