Números 31

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 "Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people."

3 Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahweh’s vengeance on Midian. 4 You shall send one thousand out of every tribe, throughout all the tribes of Israel, to the war." 5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. 6 Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. 7 They fought against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses. They killed every male. 8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. 9 The children of Israel took the women of Midian captive with their little ones; and all their livestock, all their flocks, and all their goods, they took as plunder. 10 All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire. 11 They took all the captives, and all the plunder, both of man and of animal. 12 They brought the captives with the prey and the plunder, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho. 13 Moses and Eleazar the priest, with all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them outside of the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war. 15 Moses said to them, "Have you saved all the women alive? 16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh. 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. 18 But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

19 "Encamp outside of the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives. 20 You shall purify every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood."

21 Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, "This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded Moses. 22 However the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity. All that doesn’t withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water. 24 You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. Afterward you shall come into the camp."

25 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 26 "Count the plunder that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation; 27 and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. 28 Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks. 29 Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahweh’s wave offering. 30 Of the children of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle."

31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses.

32 Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep, 33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle, 34 sixty-one thousand donkeys, 35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him. 36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; 37 and Yahweh’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five. 38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which Yahweh’s tribute was seventy-two. 39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which Yahweh’s tribute was sixty-one. 40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of whom Yahweh’s tribute was thirty-two persons. 41 Moses gave the tribute, which was Yahweh’s wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses. 42 Of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided off from the men who fought 43 (now the congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, 44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, 45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, 46 and sixteen thousand persons), 47 even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle, as Yahweh commanded Moses.

48 The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses. 49 They said to Moses, "Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us. 50 We have brought Yahweh’s offering, what every man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh."

51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels. 52 All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to Yahweh, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.*31:52 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so 16,750 shekels is about 167.5 kilograms or about 368.5 pounds. 53 The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting for a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh.

Kriget mot Midjan

1 Herren talade till Mose. Han sade: 2 *4 Mos 25:17f. "Ta hämnd på midjaniterna*31:2hämnd på midjaniternaEfter förförelsen och hemsökelsen i kap 25 (jfr 5 Mos kap 7 och 13). för Israels barn. Därefter ska du samlas till ditt folk." 3 Och Mose sade till folket: "Låt några av era män beväpna sig till strid. De ska rycka ut mot Midjan och utföra Herrens hämnd på Midjan. 4 Tusen man från var och en av Israels alla stammar ska ni sända ut i striden." 5 Då avskiljdes ur Israels ätter tusen man av varje stam, tolvtusen man beväpnade till strid. 6 *4 Mos 10:9. Dessa sände Mose ut i striden, tusen man ur varje stam, tillsammans med Pinehas, prästen Eleasars son, som tog de heliga föremålen och larmtrumpeterna i sin hand.

7 De gick i krig mot Midjan, så som Herren hade befallt Mose, och de dödade alla av manligt kön. 8 *Jos 13:21f. Tillsammans med andra som blev slagna av dem dödades också de midjanitiska kungarna Evi, Rekem, Sur, Hur och Reba, fem midjanitiska kungar. Också Bileam, Beors son, dödade de med svärd. 9 Israels barn förde bort Midjans kvinnor och barn som fångar, och alla deras dragdjur, all deras boskap och allt deras gods tog de som byte. 10 Alla deras städer där de bodde och alla deras tältläger brände de upp i eld. 11 De tog med sig allt bytet och allt de hade rövat, både människor och boskap, 12 och förde fångarna och det rövade och bytet till Mose och prästen Eleasar och till Israels barns församling i lägret på Moabs hedar, vid Jordan mitt emot Jeriko.

Hären återvänder

13 Mose och prästen Eleasar och församlingens alla furstar gick för att möta dem utanför lägret. 14 Men Mose blev upprörd över krigsbefälet, både överbefälen och underbefälen, när de kom tillbaka från kriget. 15 Mose sade till dem: "Lät ni alla kvinnor leva? 16 *4 Mos 22:5f, 25:1f, 2 Petr 2:15. Det var ju de som efter Bileams råd förledde Israels barn till otrohet mot Herren i saken med Peor, så att hemsökelsen drabbade Herrens församling. 17 Döda nu alla pojkar, och döda alla kvinnor som har legat med en man. 18 Men alla flickor som inte har legat med en man ska ni låta leva*31:18låta levaDetta reglerades i 5 Mos 21:10f. och spara åt er själva.

19 *4 Mos 19:11, 16. Och ni ska vara utanför lägret i sju dagar. Var och en som har dödat någon människa, och var och en som har rört vid någon slagen ska rena sig*31:19rena sigEfter att ha rört döda människor (se 19:11f). på tredje dagen och på sjunde dagen. Det gäller er själva och era fångar. 20 Ni ska rena alla kläder, allt som är tillverkat av skinn, allt som är gjort av gethår och alla föremål av trä."

21 Prästen Eleasar sade till de stridsmän som hade deltagit i kriget: "Detta är den lagstadga som Herren har befallt Mose: 22 Guld och silver, koppar, järn, tenn och bly, 23 *4 Mos 19:9. allt som tål eld ska ni låta gå genom eld så att det blir rent. Men det ska också renas med reningsvatten. Och allt som inte tål eld ska ni låta gå genom vatten. 24 På sjunde dagen ska ni tvätta era kläder och så vara rena. Därefter får ni gå in i lägret."

Fördelning av bytet

25 Herren sade till Mose: 26 "Tillsammans med prästen Eleasar och huvudmännen för församlingen ska du göra en beräkning över det tagna bytet av människor och boskap. 27 Sedan ska du dela bytet i två delar mellan de krigare som deltagit i striden och hela församlingen. 28 Som skatt åt Herren ska du ta från det krigsfolk som har varit med i striden: en av var femhundrade av människor, kor, åsnor och får. 29 Ta detta av deras hälft och ge det åt prästen Eleasar som en offergåva åt Herren. 30 Och från Israels barns hälft ska du ta var femtionde av människor, kor, åsnor, får och all boskap och ge det till leviterna, som ska ha vården om Herrens tabernakel."

31 Mose och prästen Eleasar gjorde som Herren hade befallt Mose. 32 Och bytet, resten av det som krigsfolket hade tagit, utgjorde: av får 675 000, 33 av kor 72 000, 34 av åsnor 61 000 35 och av människor, kvinnor som inte legat med någon man, tillsammans 32 000.

36 Hälften av bytet, den del som tillföll dem som deltagit i striden, utgjorde:

av får 337 500, 37 varav skatten åt Herren utgjorde 675 får,

38 av kor 36 000, varav skatten åt Herren utgjorde 72,

39 av åsnor 30 500, varav skatten åt Herren utgjorde 61,

40 av människor 16 000, varav skatten åt Herren utgjorde 32 personer.

41 Och skatten, den för Herren bestämda gåvan, gav Mose åt prästen Eleasar, så som Herren hade befallt Mose.

42 Den hälft som tillföll Israels barn och som Mose hade avskilt från krigsfolkets del, 43 den hälft som tillföll församlingen, utgjorde: av får 337 500, 44 av kor 36 000, 45 av åsnor 30 500 46 och av människor 16 000. 47 Ur den hälft som tillföll israeliterna tog Mose ut var femtionde, både av människor och boskap, och gav det till leviterna som hade ansvar för Herrens tabernakel, så som Herren hade befallt Mose.

48 Befälhavarna över härens avdelningar, både överbefälen och underbefälen, kom fram till Mose 49 och sade till honom: "Dina tjänare har räknat antalet krigsmän som vi har haft under vårt befäl, och ingen man fattas bland oss. 50 Därför har nu var och en av oss som en offergåva åt Herren burit fram det som han kommit över av guldsmycken – armband, ringar, örhängen och halssmycken – för att bringa försoning för oss inför Herrens ansikte."

51 Mose och prästen Eleasar tog emot guldet från dem, alla slags klenoder. 52 Guldet som gavs som gåva åt Herren av överbefälen och underbefälen utgjorde sammanlagt 16 750 siklar.*31:52Guldet … 16 750 siklarCa 170 kg guld.53 Krigsfolket hade tagit byte, var och en för sig. 54 Och Mose och prästen Eleasar tog emot guldet från överbefälen och underbefälen och bar in det i uppenbarelsetältet, för att det skulle bringa Israels barn i åminnelse inför Herrens ansikte.
