16 Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.

17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

16 E, quando jejuardes, não vos mostreis contristados como os hipócritas; porque desfiguram os seus rostos, para que aos homens pareça que jejuam. Em verdade vos digo que já receberam o seu galardão. 17 Porém tu, quando jejuares, unge a tua cabeça, e lava o teu rosto. 18 Para não pareceres aos homens que jejuas, mas a teu Pai, que está em oculto; e teu Pai, que vê em oculto, te recompensará.
