1 E veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:2 Que pensais, vós, os que usais esta parábola sobre a terra de Israel, dizendo: Os pais comeram uvas verdes, e os dentes dos filhos se embotaram?3 Vivo eu, diz o Senhor Deus, que nunca mais direis esta parábola em Israel.4 Eis que todas as almas são minhas; como o é a alma do pai, assim também a alma do filho é minha: a alma que pecar, essa morrerá.5 Sendo, pois, o homem justo, e praticando juízo e justiça,6 Não comendo sobre os montes, nem levantando os seus olhos para os ídolos da casa de Israel, nem contaminando a mulher do seu próximo, nem se chegando à mulher na sua separação,7 Não oprimindo a ninguém, tornando ao devedor o seu penhor, não roubando, dando o seu pão ao faminto, e cobrindo ao nu com roupa,8 Não dando o seu dinheiro à usura, e não recebendo demais, desviando a sua mão da injustiça, e fazendo verdadeiro juízo entre homem e homem;9 Andando nos meus estatutos, e guardando os meus juízos, e procedendo segundo a verdade, o tal justo certamente viverá, diz o Senhor Deus.10 E se ele gerar um filho ladrão, derramador de sangue, que fizer a seu irmão qualquer destas coisas;11 E não cumprir todos aqueles deveres, mas antes comer sobre os montes, e contaminar a mulher de seu próximo,12 Oprimir ao pobre e necessitado, praticar roubos, não tornar o penhor, e levantar os seus olhos para os ídolos, e cometer abominação,13 E emprestar com usura, e receber demais, porventura viverá? Não viverá. Todas estas abominações ele fez, certamente morrerá; o seu sangue será sobre ele.14 E eis que também, se ele gerar um filho que veja todos os pecados que seu pai fez e, vendo-os, não cometer coisas semelhantes,15 Não comer sobre os montes, e não levantar os seus olhos para os ídolos da casa de Israel, e não contaminar a mulher de seu próximo,16 E não oprimir a ninguém, e não retiver o penhor, e não roubar, der o seu pão ao faminto, e cobrir ao nu com roupa,17 Desviar do pobre a sua mão, não receber usura e juros, cumprir os meus juízos, e andar nos meus estatutos, o tal não morrerá pela iniquidade de seu pai; certamente viverá.18 Seu pai, porque praticou a extorsão, roubou os bens do irmão, e fez o que não era bom no meio de seu povo, eis que ele morrerá pela sua iniquidade.19 Mas dizeis: Por que não levará o filho a iniquidade do pai? Porque o filho procedeu com retidão e justiça, e guardou todos os meus estatutos, e os praticou, por isso certamente viverá.20 A alma que pecar, essa morrerá; o filho não levará a iniquidade do pai, nem o pai levará a iniquidade do filho. A justiça do justo ficará sobre ele e a impiedade do ímpio cairá sobre ele.21 Mas se o ímpio se converter de todos os pecados que cometeu, e guardar todos os meus estatutos, e proceder com retidão e justiça, certamente viverá; não morrerá.22 De todas as transgressões que cometeu não haverá lembrança contra ele; pela justiça que praticou viverá.23 Desejaria eu, de qualquer maneira, a morte do ímpio? Diz o Senhor Deus; Não desejo antes que se converta dos seus caminhos, e viva?24 Mas, desviando-se o justo da sua justiça, e cometendo a iniquidade, fazendo conforme todas as abominações que faz o ímpio, porventura viverá? De todas as justiças que tiver feito não se fará memória; na sua transgressão com que transgrediu, e no seu pecado com que pecou, neles morrerá.25 Dizeis, porém: O caminho do Senhor não é direito. Ouvi agora, ó casa de Israel: Porventura não é o meu caminho direito? Não são os vossos caminhos tortuosos?26 Desviando-se o justo da sua justiça, e cometendo iniquidade, morrerá por ela; na iniquidade, que cometeu, morrerá.27 Mas, convertendo-se o ímpio da impiedade que cometeu, e procedendo com retidão e justiça, conservará este a sua alma em vida.28 Pois que reconsidera, e se converte de todas as suas transgressões que cometeu; certamente viverá, não morrerá.29 Contudo, diz a casa de Israel: O caminho do Senhor não é direito. Porventura não são direitos os meus caminhos, ó casa de Israel? E não são tortuosos os vossos caminhos?30 Portanto, eu vos julgarei, cada um conforme os seus caminhos, ó casa de Israel, diz o Senhor Deus. Tornai-vos, e convertei-vos de todas as vossas transgressões, e a iniquidade não vos servirá de tropeço.31 Lançai de vós todas as vossas transgressões com que transgredistes, e fazei-vos um coração novo e um espírito novo; pois, por que razão morreríeis, ó casa de Israel?32 Porque não tenho prazer na morte do que morre, diz o Senhor Deus; convertei-vos, pois, e vivei.

1 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb in the country of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge?3 As I live, saith the Lord Eternal, ye shall not have any more to use this proverb in Israel.4 Behold, all the souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son––mine are they: the soul which sinneth that alone shall die.5 But if a man be righteous, and execute justice and righteousness;6 Upon the mountains he eateth not, and his eyes he lifteth not up to the idols of the house of Israel, and the wife of his neighbor he defileth not, and unto a woman in her separation he cometh not near;7 And he over–reacheth no man, he restoreth his pledge for a debt, a robbery he doth not commit, his bread he giveth to the hungry, and the naked he covereth with a garment;8 Upon interest he giveth not forth, and increase he doth not take, from wrong he withdraweth his hand, true judgment he executeth between man and man;9 In my statutes he walketh steadfastly, and my ordinances he keepeth to deal truly: he is righteous, he shall surely live, saith the Lord Eternal.10 If he now beget a dissolute son that sheddeth blood and doth to his brother any one of thee things;11 And he is one that doth not any of these duties; but eateth even upon the mountains, and defileth the wife of his neighbor;12 The poor and needy he over–reacheth, he is guilty of robberies, the pledge he restoreth not, and to the idols he lifteth up his eyes, abominations he committeth:13 Upon interest he giveth forth, and increase he taketh: and he should live? he shall not live; all these abominations hath he done, he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.14 And behold, if he beget a son, who seeth all the sins of his father which he hath done, and he considereth, and doth not the like of them;15 Upon the mountains he eateth not, and his eyes he lifteth not up to the idols of the house of Israel, the wife of his neighbor he defileth not;16 And he over–reacheth no man, a pledge he withholdeth not, and of a robbery he is never guilty, his bread he giveth to the hungry, and the naked he covereth with a garment;17 From the poor he withdraweth his hand, interest and increase he taketh not: my ordinances he executeth; in my statutes he walketh:––he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.18 His father, because he unjustly withheld wages, was guilty of robbery on his brother, and did that which is not good in the midst of his people,––and lo, he died through his iniquity.19 Yet say ye, Why doth not the son bear part of the iniquity of the father? when the son hath executed justice and righteousness, all my statutes hath he kept, and hath done them: he shall surely live.20 The soul that sinneth, she alone shall die; the son shall not help to bear the iniquity of the father and the father shall not help to bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.21 And the wicked, when he turneth away from all his sins that he hath committed, and keepeth all my statutes, and executeth justice and righteousness, shall surely live, he shall not die.22 All his transgressions which he hath committed shall not be remembered unto him: through his righteousness which he hath done shall he live.23 Have I then the least pleasure in the death of the wicked? saith the Lord Eternal: and not in his turning away from his ways, that he may live?24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth wrong, and doth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? all his righteousness that he hath done shall not he remembered: through his trespass which he hath committed, and through his sin that he hath done,––through them shall he die.25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equitable: hear now, O house of Israel, Is not my way equitable? is it not your ways which are not equitable?26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and doth wrong, and dieth therefore: through his wrong which he hath done must he die.27 Again, when the wicked turneth away from his wickedness which he hath committed, and executeth justice and righteousness: he shall indeed preserve his soul alive.28 Because he hath considered, and turned away from all his transgressions which he had committed: he shall surely live, he shall not die.29 Yet say the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equitable: are not my ways equitable, O house of Israel? is it not your ways which are not equitable?30 Therefore will I judge you, every one according to his ways, O house of Israel, saith the Lord Eternal: return ye, and cause others to return from all your transgressions, that iniquity may not become your stumbling–block.31 Cast away from yourselves all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that deserveth to die, saith the Lord Eternal: therefore convert yourselves, and live.
