1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there. 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land. 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land. 4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were: 5 and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them. 6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. 7 And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof; 9 and she said unto the men, I know that Jehovah hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by Jehovah, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token; 13 and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death. 14 And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when Jehovah giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. 16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. 17 And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household. 19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. 20 But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. 21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. 23 Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them. 24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly Jehovah hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

Cei doi oameni au plecat și au ajuns*Evr. 11:31.Iac. 2:25. în casa unei curve, care se chema Rahav*Mat. 1:5., și s-au culcat acolo. 2 S-a dat*Ps. 127:1.Prov. 21:30. de știre împăratului din Ierihon și i-au spus: „Iată că niște oameni dintre copiii lui Israel au venit aici astă-noapte ca să iscodească țara." 3 Împăratul Ierihonului a trimis la Rahav să-i spună: „Scoate afară pe bărbații care au venit la tine și care au intrat în casa ta, căci au venit să iscodească țara." 4 Femeia*2 Sam. 17:19,20. a luat pe cei doi bărbați și i-a ascuns și a zis: „Este adevărat că bărbații aceștia au venit la mine, dar nu știam de unde sunt; 5 și, fiindcă poarta a trebuit să se închidă noaptea, bărbații aceștia au ieșit afară; nu știu unde s-au dus: grăbiți-vă de-i urmăriți și-i veți ajunge." 6 Ea îi suise*Exod 1:17.2 Sam. 17:19. pe acoperiș și-i ascunsese sub niște mănunchiuri de in pe care le întinsese pe acoperiș. 7 Oamenii aceia i-au urmărit pe drumul care duce la vadul Iordanului și, după ce au ieșit ei, s-a închis poarta. 8 Înainte de a se culca iscoadele, Rahav s-a suit la ei pe acoperiș 9 și le-a zis: „Știu că Domnul v-a dat țara aceasta, căci ne-a apucat groaza*Gen. 35:5.Exod 23:27.Deut. 2:25;11:25. de voi și toți locuitorii țării tremură înaintea voastră. 10 Fiindcă am auzit cum, la ieșirea voastră din Egipt, Domnul a secat*Exod 14:21. Cap. 4:23. înaintea voastră apele Mării Roșii și am auzit ce ați făcut*Num. 21:24,34,35. celor doi împărați ai amoriților dincolo de Iordan, lui Sihon și Og, pe care i-ați nimicit cu desăvârșire. 11 De când am*Exod 15:14,15. auzit lucrul acesta, ni s-a tăiat inima*Cap. 5:1;7:5.Is. 13:7. și toți ne-am pierdut nădejdea înaintea voastră, căci Domnul*Deut. 4:39. Dumnezeul vostru este Dumnezeu sus în ceruri și jos pe pământ. 12 Și acum, vă rog, jurați-mi*1 Sam. 20:14,15,17. pe Domnul că veți avea față de casa*1 Tim. 5:8. tatălui meu aceeași bunăvoință pe care am avut-o eu față de voi. Dați-mi un semn*Vers. 18. de încredințare 13 că veți lăsa cu viață pe tatăl meu, pe mama mea, pe frații mei, pe surorile mele și pe toți ai lor și că ne veți scăpa de la moarte." 14 Bărbații aceia i-au răspuns: „Suntem gata să murim pentru voi, dacă nu ne dați pe față; și când Domnul ne va da țara aceasta, ne vom purta cu tine cu bunăvoință*Jud. 1:24.Mat. 5:7. și credincioșie." 15 Ea i-a coborât*Fapte 9:25. cu o funie pe fereastră, căci casa în care locuia era lângă zidul cetății. 16 Și le-a zis: „Duceți-vă spre munte, ca să nu vă întâlnească cei ce vă urmăresc, ascundeți-vă acolo trei zile, până se vor întoarce, după aceea să vă vedeți de drum." 17 Bărbații aceia i-au zis: „Iată cum vom fi dezlegați*Exod 20:7. de jurământul pe care ne-ai pus să-l facem. 18 La intrarea*Vers. 12. noastră în țară, leagă funia aceasta de fir cârmâziu la fereastra prin care ne-ai coborât și strânge*Cap. 6:23. la tine în casă pe tatăl tău, pe mama ta, pe frații tăi și pe toată familia tatălui tău. 19 Dacă vreunul din ei va ieși pe poarta casei tale, ca să meargă afară pe uliță, sângele lui*Mat. 27:25. va cădea asupra capului lui și noi vom fi nevinovați, dar, dacă va pune cineva mâna pe vreunul din cei ce vor fi cu tine în casă, sângele lui va cădea asupra capului nostru. 20 Și, dacă ne vei da pe față, vom fi dezlegați de jurământul pe care ne-ai pus să-l facem." 21 Ea a răspuns: „Fie după cuvintele voastre." Și-a luat rămas-bun de la ei și ei au plecat. Ea a legat funia cârmâzie la fereastră. 22 Ei au plecat și au ajuns la munte, unde au rămas trei zile, până s-au întors cei care-i urmăreau. Cei care-i urmăreau i-au căutat pe tot drumul, dar nu i-au găsit. 23 Cei doi oameni s-au întors, s-au coborât din munte și au trecut Iordanul. Au venit la Iosua, fiul lui Nun, și i-au istorisit tot ce li se întâmplase. 24 Ei au zis lui Iosua: „Cu adevărat, Domnul*Exod 23:31. Cap. 6:2; 21:44. a dat toată țara în mâinile noastre și toți locuitorii țării tremură înaintea noastră."
