1 The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Nerijah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, saying,2 Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, concerning thee, Baruch:3 Thou didst say, Woe unto me! for Jehovah hath added grief to my sorrow; I am weary with my sighing, and I find no rest.4 Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, what I have built do I overthrow, and what I have planted I pluck up, even this whole land.5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek {them} not; for behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou shalt go.

1 Die woord wat die profeet Jeremia aan Barug, die seun van Ner¡a, meegedeel het toe hy hierdie woorde uit die mond van Jeremia in 'n boek geskrywe het, in die vierde jaar van Jojakim, die seun van Jos¡a, die koning van Juda:2 So spreek die HERE, die God van Israel, aangaande jou, o Barug!3 Jy sê: Wee my tog, want die HERE het kommer aan my smart toegevoeg; ek is moeg van my gesug en vind geen rus nie!4 So moet jy vir hom sê: So spreek die HERE: Kyk, wat Ek gebou het, breek Ek self af; en wat Ek geplant het, ruk Ek self uit; en dit betref die hele aarde.5 En sou jy vir jou groot dinge soek? Soek dit nie; want kyk, Ek bring onheil oor alle vlees, spreek die HERE; maar Ek sal jou siel vir jou as buit gee in al die plekke waarheen jy sal gaan.
