1 Why, Jehovah, standest thou afar off? {Why} hidest thou thyself in times of distress?2 The wicked, in his pride, doth hotly pursue the afflicted. They shall be taken in the devices that they have imagined.3 For the wicked boasteth of his soul's desire, and he blesseth the covetous; he contemneth Jehovah.4 The wicked {saith}, in the haughtiness of his countenance, He doth not search out: all his thoughts are, There is no God!5 His ways always succeed; thy judgments are far above out of his sight; {as for} all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.6 He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved; from generation to generation I shall be in no adversity.7 His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and oppression; under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.8 He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; in the secret places doth he slay the innocent: his eyes watch for the wretched.9 He lieth in wait secretly, like a lion in his thicket; he lieth in wait to catch the afflicted: he doth catch the afflicted, drawing him into his net.10 He croucheth, he boweth down, that the wretched may fall by his strong ones.11 He saith in his heart, *God hath forgotten, he hideth his face, he will never see {it}.12 Arise, Jehovah; O *God, lift up thy hand: forget not the afflicted.13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? He hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require {it}.14 Thou hast seen {it}, for thou thyself beholdest trouble and vexation, to requite by thy hand. The wretched committeth himself unto thee; thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.15 Break thou the arm of the wicked, and as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness {till} thou find none.16 Jehovah is King for ever and ever: the nations have perished out of his land.17 Jehovah, thou hast heard the desire of the meek, thou hast established their heart: thou causest thine ear to hear,18 To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed one, that the man of the earth may terrify no more.

1 Por que, ó Jeová, te conservas afastado? Por que te escondes em tempos de extremidade?2 O iníquo na sua arrogância persegue vivamente ao humilde, Sejam eles apanhados nos tramas que urdiram.3 Pois o iníquo se jata das cobiças da sua alma, E o que é dado à rapina, renuncia, menoscaba a Jeová.4 Diz com ar arrogante o iníquo: Ele o não vingará; Que não há Deus são todas as suas cogitações.5 Seguros são os seus caminhos em todos os tempos; Muito acima e longe dele estão os seus juízos: Quanto a todos os seus adversários, ele os trata com desprezo.6 Diz no seu coração: Não serei abalado: De geração em geração não me virá mal algum.7 Cheia está a sua boca de maldição, enganos e opressão; Debaixo da sua língua está a injúria e a iniqüidade.8 Fica de emboscada nas vilas, Nos lugares ocultos mata ao inocente, Os seus olhos estão de espreita ao desamparado.9 Qual leão no seu covil, está ele de emboscada em lugar oculto; Está de emboscada para apanhar o pobre; Apanha-o e o leva na sua rede.10 Agacha-se, curva-se; Assim os desamparados lhe caem nas garras.11 Diz ele no seu coração: Deus já se esqueceu, Esconde o seu rosto; nunca verá isto.12 Levanta-te, Jeová: ó Deus, ergue a tua mão: Não te esqueças do aflito.13 Por que razão despreza o iníquo a Deus, E diz no seu coração: Tu não o vingarás?14 Tu hás, com efeito, visto; porque olhas para o trabalho e a dor, para o tomares na tua mão. A ti é que o desamparado se entrega; Tu tens sido o amparador do órfão.15 Quebra tu o braço do iníquo, E quanto ao malvado, esquadrinha tu a sua maldade, até que a descubras de todo.16 Jeová é Rei para todo o sempre: Da sua terra são exterminadas as nações.17 Tu, Jeová, tens ouvido o anelo dos humildes; Tu prepararás o seu coração, Farás atento o teu ouvido,18 Para fazeres justiça ao órfão e ao oprimido, A fim de que o homem que é da terra não sirva mais de terror.
