Genesis 28

1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman. 2 Go at once to Paddan Aram,*28:2 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia; also in verses 5, 6 and 7 to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. 3 May God Almighty*28:3 Hebrew El-Shaddai bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples. 4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham." 5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman," 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. 8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac; 9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it*28:13 Or There beside him stood the Lord, and he said: "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.*28:14 Or will use your name and the name of your offspring in blessings (see 48:20)15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it." 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel,*28:19 Bethel means house of God. though the city used to be called Luz.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord*28:20,21 Or Since God… father’s household, the Lord will be my God 22 and*28:21,22 Or household, and the Lord will be my God, 22 then this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."

1 Então, Isaque chamou Jacó, o abençoou e lhe ordenou:

— Não se case com mulher cananeia. 2 Vá a Padã-Arã,*28.2 Isto é, a região noroeste da Mesopotâmia; também nos versículos 5-7. à casa de Betuel, o seu avô materno, e case-se com uma das filhas de Labão, irmão da sua mãe. 3 Que o Deus Todo-poderoso*28.3 Hebraico: El-Shadai. o abençoe, faça-o fértil e o multiplique, para que você se torne uma comunidade de povos. 4 Que ele dê a você e à sua descendência a bênção de Abraão, para que você possua a terra na qual vive como estrangeiro, a terra dada por Deus a Abraão.

5 Então, Isaque despediu Jacó, e este foi a Padã-Arã, ao filho do arameu Betuel, Labão, irmão de Rebeca, mãe de Jacó e de Esaú.

6 Esaú viu que Isaque havia abençoado Jacó e o havia mandado a Padã-Arã para escolher ali uma mulher e que, ao abençoá-lo, lhe dera a ordem de não se casar com mulher cananeia. 7 Também soube que Jacó obedecera ao seu pai e à sua mãe e fora para Padã-Arã. 8 Percebendo Esaú que Isaque, o seu pai, não aprovava as mulheres cananeias, 9 foi à casa de Ismael e casou-se com Maalate, irmã de Nebaiote, filha de Ismael, filho de Abraão, que foi acrescentada às outras esposas que ele já tinha.

O sonho de Jacó em Betel

10 Jacó partiu de Berseba e foi para Harã. 11 Chegando a determinado lugar, parou para pernoitar, porque o sol já se havia posto. Tomando uma das pedras do local, colocou-a sob a cabeça para deitar-se. 12 Ali sonhou que havia uma escadaria que se erguia da terra cujo topo alcançava os céus e pela qual os anjos de Deus subiam e desciam. 13 Acima dela, em pé, estava o Senhor, que lhe disse:

— Eu sou o Senhor, o Deus de Abraão, o seu pai, e o Deus de Isaque. Darei a você e à sua descendência a terra na qual você está deitado. 14 Os seus descendentes serão como o pó da terra e se espalharão para o oeste e para o leste, para o norte e para o sul. Todas as famílias da terra serão abençoadas por meio de você e da sua descendência. 15 Eu estou com você e cuidarei de você, aonde quer que vá, e o trarei de volta a esta terra. Não o deixarei enquanto não fizer o que lhe prometi.

16 Quando Jacó acordou do sono, disse:

— Sem dúvida, o Senhor está neste lugar, mas eu não sabia!

17 Com muito medo, ele disse:

— Temível é este lugar! Não é outro senão a casa de Deus; esta é a porta dos céus.

18 Na manhã seguinte, Jacó levantou-se cedo, pegou a pedra que havia posto sob a cabeça, colocou-a em pé como coluna e derramou óleo sobre o seu topo. 19 Ele deu àquele lugar o nome de Betel,*28.19 Betel significa casa de Deus. embora a cidade anteriormente se chamasse Luz.

20 Então, Jacó fez um voto, dizendo:

— Se Deus estiver comigo, cuidar de mim nesta viagem que estou fazendo, prover-me de comida e roupa 21 e levar-me de volta são e salvo à casa do meu pai, então o Senhor será o meu Deus, 22 e esta pedra que hoje pus como coluna será casa de Deus, e, de tudo o que me deres, certamente te darei o dízimo.
