Genesis 35

Jacob Returns to Bethel

1 Then God said to Jacob, "Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau."

2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone." 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.

6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan. 7 There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel,*35:7 El Bethel means God of Bethel. because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.*35:8 Allon Bakuth means oak of weeping.

9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,*35:9 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia; also in verse 26 God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 God said to him, "Your name is Jacob,*35:10 Jacob means he grasps the heel, a Hebrew idiom for he deceives. but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.*35:10 Israel probably means he struggles with God." So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, "I am God Almighty*35:11 Hebrew El-Shaddai; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants. 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you." 13 Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.*35:15 Bethel means house of God.

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, "Don’t despair, for you have another son." 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.*35:18 Ben-Oni means son of my trouble. But his father named him Benjamin.*35:18 Benjamin means son of my right hand.

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

23 The sons of Leah:

Reuben the firstborn of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

24 The sons of Rachel:

Joseph and Benjamin.

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:

Dan and Naphtali.

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:

Gad and Asher.

These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed. 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years. 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Jacó volta a Betel

1 Deus disse a Jacó:

— Suba a Betel*35.1 Betel significa casa de Deus. e estabeleça-se lá. Faça um altar ao Deus que lhe apareceu quando você fugia de Esaú, o seu irmão.

2 Então, Jacó disse à sua família e a todos os que estavam com ele:

— Livrem-se dos deuses estrangeiros que estão entre vocês, purifiquem-se e troquem de roupa. 3 Venham! Vamos subir a Betel, onde farei um altar ao Deus que me ouviu no dia da minha angústia e que tem estado comigo por onde tenho andado.

4 Então, entregaram a Jacó todos os deuses estrangeiros que tinham em mãos e os brincos que usavam nas orelhas, e Jacó os enterrou ao pé do carvalho, próximo a Siquém. 5 Quando eles partiram, o terror de Deus caiu de tal maneira sobre as cidades ao redor que ninguém ousou perseguir os filhos de Jacó.

6 Jacó e todos os que com ele estavam chegaram a Luz, que é Betel, na terra de Canaã. 7 Nesse lugar, construiu um altar e lhe deu o nome de El-Betel,*35.7 El-Betel significa Deus de Betel. porque ali Deus havia se revelado a ele, quando fugia do seu irmão.

8 Débora, ama de Rebeca, morreu e foi sepultada perto de Betel, ao pé do carvalho, que, por isso, foi chamado Alom-Bacute.*35.8 Alom-Bacute significa carvalho do pranto.

9 Depois que Jacó retornou de Padã-Arã,*35.9 Isto é, a região noroeste da Mesopotâmia; também no versículo 26. Deus lhe apareceu de novo e o abençoou, 10 dizendo:

— O seu nome é Jacó,*35.10 Jacó significa ele agarra o calcanhar, expressão hebraica para tirar vantagem ou enganar. mas você já não será chamado Jacó; o seu nome será Israel.*35.10 Israel significa ele luta com Deus.

Deu-lhe, assim, o nome de Israel.

11 Deus ainda lhe disse:

— Eu sou o Deus Todo-poderoso;*35.11 Hebraico: El-Shadai. seja fértil e multiplique-se. De você procederão uma nação e uma comunidade de nações, e reis virão da sua linhagem. 12 A terra que dei a Abraão e a Isaque dou a você; também aos seus futuros descendentes darei esta terra.

13 A seguir, Deus subiu do lugar onde tinha falado com Jacó.

14 Jacó levantou uma coluna de pedra no lugar em que Deus lhe falara; sobre ela despejou uma oferta de bebidas e derramou óleo. 15 Jacó deu o nome de Betel ao lugar onde Deus tinha falado com ele.

A morte de Raquel e o pecado de Rúben

16 Eles partiram de Betel, e, quando ainda estavam a certa distância de Efrata, Raquel entrou em trabalho de parto e teve complicações. 17 Em meio às complicações do parto, a parteira lhe disse:

— Não tenha medo, pois você está tendo outro menino.

18 No seu último suspiro, quando estava morrendo, deu ao filho o nome de Benoni.*35.18 Benoni significa filho da minha aflição. O pai, porém, deu-lhe o nome de Benjamim.*35.18 Benjamim significa filho da minha mão direita.

19 Assim, morreu Raquel e foi sepultada no caminho de Efrata, que é Belém. 20 Sobre a sua sepultura Jacó levantou uma coluna, e até o dia de hoje aquela coluna marca o túmulo de Raquel.

21 Israel partiu novamente e armou acampamento adiante de Migdal-Éder.*35.21 Migdal-Éder significa torre do rebanho.22 Na época em que Israel vivia naquela região, Rúben deitou-se com Bila, concubina do seu pai, e Israel soube disso.

Os filhos de Jacó

Jacó teve doze filhos:

23 Estes foram os seus filhos com Lia:

Rúben, o primogênito de Jacó;

Simeão, Levi, Judá, Issacar e Zebulom.

24 Estes foram os seus filhos com Raquel:

José e Benjamim.

25 Estes foram os seus filhos com Bila, serva de Raquel:

Dã e Naftali.

26 Estes foram os seus filhos com Zilpa, serva de Lia:

Gade e Aser.

Foram estes os filhos de Jacó, nascidos em Padã-Arã.

A morte de Isaque

27 Depois, Jacó chegou à casa de Isaque, o seu pai, em Manre, perto de Quiriate-Arba, que é Hebrom, onde Abraão e Isaque tinham morado. 28 Isaque viveu cento e oitenta anos. 29 Morreu em idade bem avançada e foi reunido aos seus antepassados. Os seus filhos, Esaú e Jacó, o sepultaram.
