Genesis 34

Dinah and the Shechemites

1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in*34:7 Or against Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.

8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife. 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade*34:10 Or move about freely; also in verse 21 in it, and acquire property in it."

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife."

13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, "We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle among you and become one people with you. 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go."

18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city. 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us."

24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male. 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where*34:27 Or because their sister had been defiled. 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields. 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."

31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"

Diná e os siquemitas

1 Certa vez, Diná, a filha que Lia dera a Jacó, saiu para conhecer as mulheres daquela terra. 2 Quando a viu, Siquém, filho de Hamor, o heveu e governador daquela terra, tomou-a, deitou-se com ela e abusou dela. 3 Ele ficou totalmente atraído por Diná, filha de Jacó; amou a moça e tentou conquistá-la com palavras. 4 Então, Siquém foi dizer a Hamor, o seu pai:

— Consiga-me aquela moça para que seja a minha mulher.

5 Quando Jacó ouviu que Siquém havia tornado impura a sua filha Diná, os seus filhos estavam no campo com os rebanhos; por isso, esperou calado até que regressassem.

6 Então, Hamor, pai de Siquém, foi conversar com Jacó. 7 Quando os filhos de Jacó voltaram do campo e souberam de tudo, ficaram profundamente indignados e irados, porque Siquém tinha cometido uma grande ofensa em*34.7 Ou contra. Israel, deitando-se dessa forma com a filha de Jacó — tal coisa não se faz.

8 Hamor, porém, lhes disse:

— O meu filho Siquém apaixonou-se pela filha de vocês. Por favor, entreguem-na a ele para que seja a sua mulher. 9 Casem-se entre nós; deem-nos as suas filhas, e tomem para vocês as nossas. 10 Estabeleçam-se entre nós. A terra está à disposição de vocês: morem nela, façam negócios*34.10 Ou movam-se livremente; também no versículo 21. e comprem propriedades.

11 Então, Siquém disse ao pai e aos irmãos de Diná:

— Tratem-me com favor, e eu lhes darei o que me pedirem. 12 Aumentem quanto quiserem o dote e o presente pela noiva, e pagarei o que me pedirem. Tão somente me deem a moça por mulher.

13 Os filhos de Jacó, porém, responderam com engano a Siquém e a Hamor, o seu pai, por ter Siquém tornado impura Diná, a irmã deles. 14 Disseram:

— Não podemos fazer isso; jamais entregaremos a nossa irmã a um homem que não seja circuncidado. Seria uma vergonha para nós. 15 Somente faremos um acordo com vocês com uma condição: que vocês se tornem como nós, circuncidando todos os do sexo masculino. 16 Só então lhes daremos as nossas filhas e tomaremos as suas como esposas. Nós nos estabeleceremos entre vocês e seremos um só povo. 17 Se, porém, não nos derem ouvidos e não se circuncidarem, tomaremos a nossa irmã*34.17 Hebraico: filha. e partiremos.

18 A proposta deles pareceu boa a Hamor e a Siquém, o seu filho. 19 O jovem, que era o mais respeitado de todos os da casa do seu pai, não demorou em cumprir o que pediram, porque estava apaixonado pela filha de Jacó.

20 Assim, Hamor e Siquém, o seu filho, dirigiram-se à porta da cidade para conversar com os seus concidadãos e disseram:

21 — Esses homens demonstram ser amigos. Permitam que eles habitem na nossa terra e façam negócios aqui; vejam que a terra tem bastante lugar para eles. Poderemos casar com as filhas deles, e eles, com as nossas. 22 No entanto, só entrarão em acordo conosco, estabelecendo-se entre nós para nos tornarmos um só povo, com a condição de que todos os nossos homens sejam circuncidados, como eles. 23 Assim, não serão nossos os rebanhos, os bens e todos os outros animais deles? Aceitemos, então, a condição deles para que habitem entre nós.

24 Todos os que saíram para reunir-se à porta da cidade concordaram com Hamor e com Siquém, o seu filho, e todos os homens da cidade foram circuncidados.

25 Três dias depois, quando ainda sofriam dores, dois filhos de Jacó, Simeão e Levi, irmãos de Diná, tomaram cada um a sua espada e atacaram a cidade desprevenida, matando todos os homens. 26 Mataram à espada Hamor e Siquém, o seu filho, tomaram Diná da casa de Siquém e partiram. 27 Vieram, então, os outros filhos de Jacó e, passando pelos corpos, saquearam a cidade onde*34.27 Ou porque. haviam tornado impura a sua irmã. 28 Apoderaram-se das ovelhas, dos bois e dos jumentos e de tudo o que havia na cidade e no campo. 29 Levaram todas as crianças e as mulheres como prisioneiras e saquearam todos os bens e tudo o que havia nas casas.

30 Então, Jacó disse a Simeão e a Levi:

— Vocês me puseram em perigo, atraindo sobre mim o ódio dos cananeus e dos ferezeus, habitantes desta terra. Somos poucos, e, se eles juntarem forças e nos atacarem, eu e a minha família seremos destruídos.

31 Eles, porém, responderam:

— Acaso ele deveria tratar a nossa irmã como uma prostituta?
