Genesis 30

1 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I’ll die!"

2 Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?"

3 Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her."

4 So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her, 5 and she became pregnant and bore him a son. 6 Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan.*30:6 Dan here means he has vindicated.

7 Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. 8 Then Rachel said, "I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali.*30:8 Naphtali means my struggle.

9 When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, "What good fortune!"*30:11 Or "A troop is coming!" So she named him Gad.*30:11 Gad can mean good fortune or troop.

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy." So she named him Asher.*30:13 Asher means happy.

14 During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes."

15 But she said to her, "Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?"

"Very well," Rachel said, "he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes."

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me," she said. "I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes." So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, "God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband." So she named him Issachar.*30:18 Issachar sounds like the Hebrew for reward.

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, "God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun.*30:20 Zebulun probably means honor.

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

22 Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive. 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my disgrace." 24 She named him Joseph,*30:24 Joseph means may he add. and said, "May the Lord add to me another son."

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland. 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you."

27 But Laban said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you." 28 He added, "Name your wages, and I will pay them."

29 Jacob said to him, "You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care. 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?"

31 "What shall I give you?" he asked.

"Don’t give me anything," Jacob replied. "But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages. 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen."

34 "Agreed," said Laban. "Let it be as you have said." 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons. 36 Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches, 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob. 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

1 Quando Raquel viu que não podia dar filhos a Jacó, teve inveja da sua irmã. Por isso, disse a Jacó:

— Dê-me filhos, ou eu morrerei!

2 Jacó ficou irritado com Raquel e disse:

— Por acaso, sou Deus? Foi ele quem a impediu de ter filhos.

3 Então, ela respondeu:

— Aqui está Bila, a minha serva. Deite-se com ela, para que ela me dê filhos e, por meio dela, eu também possa formar uma família.

4 Por isso, ela deu a Jacó a sua serva Bila por mulher. Ele deitou-se com ela, 5 e Bila engravidou e deu-lhe um filho. 6 Então, Raquel disse: "Deus me fez justiça; também ouviu o meu clamor e me deu um filho". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Dã.*30.6 Dã significa ele faz justiça.

7 Bila, serva de Raquel, engravidou novamente e deu a Jacó o segundo filho. 8 Então, Raquel disse: "Tive grande luta com a minha irmã e venci". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Naftali.*30.8 Naftali significa o meu combate.

9 Quando Lia viu que tinha parado de ter filhos, tomou a sua serva Zilpa e a deu a Jacó por mulher. 10 Zilpa, serva de Lia, deu a Jacó um filho. 11 Então, Lia disse: "Que grande sorte!".*30.11 Ou "Uma tropa está vindo!". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Gade.*30.11 Gade significa sorte.

12 Zilpa, serva de Lia, deu a Jacó um segundo filho. 13 Então, Lia disse: "Como sou feliz! As mulheres dirão que sou feliz". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Aser.*30.13 Aser significa feliz.

14 Durante a colheita do trigo, Rúben saiu ao campo, encontrou algumas mandrágoras*30.14 As mandrágoras eram plantas consideradas afrodisíacas que favoreciam a fertilidade feminina. e as trouxe para Lia, a sua mãe. Então, Raquel disse a Lia:

— Dê-me, por favor, algumas das mandrágoras do seu filho.

15 Ela, porém, respondeu:

— Você acha pouco ter tomado o meu marido? Vai tomar também as mandrágoras do meu filho?

Então, Raquel propôs:

— Por isso, Jacó se deitará com você esta noite em troca das mandrágoras do seu filho.

16 Quando Jacó chegou do campo naquela tarde, Lia saiu ao seu encontro e lhe disse:

— Hoje você se deitará comigo, pois eu adquiri esse direito com as mandrágoras do meu filho.

Naquela noite, ele se deitou com ela.

17 Deus ouviu Lia, ela engravidou e deu a Jacó o quinto filho. 18 Então, Lia disse: "Deus me recompensou por ter dado a minha serva ao meu marido". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Issacar.*30.18 Em hebraico, Issacar soa como a palavra que significa recompensa.

19 Lia engravidou de novo e deu a Jacó o sexto filho. 20 Ela disse: "Deus presenteou-me com uma dádiva preciosa. Agora o meu marido me honrará; afinal, já lhe dei seis filhos". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Zebulom.*30.20 Em hebraico, Zebulom soa como o verbo que significa exaltar ou honrar.

21 Algum tempo depois, ela deu à luz uma menina, a quem deu o nome de Diná.

22 Então, Deus lembrou-se de Raquel; ele a ouviu e a tornou fértil. 23 Ela engravidou, deu à luz um filho e disse: "Deus tirou de mim a minha desonra". 24 Deu-lhe o nome de José*30.24 José significa que ele acrescente. e disse: "Que o Senhor me acrescente ainda outro filho".

A riqueza de Jacó

25 Depois que Raquel deu à luz José, Jacó disse a Labão:

— Deixe-me voltar para a minha terra natal. 26 Dê-me as minhas mulheres, pelas quais lhe servi, e os meus filhos, e partirei. O senhor bem sabe quanto trabalhei para o senhor.

27 Labão, porém, lhe disse:

— Se conto com o seu favor, peço-lhe que fique. Por meio de adivinhação, descobri que o Senhor me abençoou por sua causa.

28 Então, acrescentou:

— Fixe o seu salário, e eu lhe pagarei.

29 Jacó lhe respondeu:

— O senhor sabe quanto trabalhei e como os seus rebanhos cresceram sob os meus cuidados. 30 O pouco que o senhor possuía antes da minha chegada aumentou muito, pois o Senhor o abençoou desde que coloquei os meus pés aqui. Contudo, quando farei algo em favor da minha própria família?

31 Então, Labão perguntou:

— Quanto você quer que eu lhe pague?

— Não quero pagamento algum — respondeu Jacó. — Se o senhor fizer por mim o que vou propor, continuarei cuidando dos seus rebanhos: 32 hoje passarei por todos os seus rebanhos e tirarei do meio deles todas as ovelhas salpicadas e pintadas, todos os cordeiros pretos e todas as cabras pintadas e salpicadas. Eles serão o meu salário. 33 Assim, a minha justiça dará testemunho de mim no futuro, toda vez que o senhor resolver verificar o meu salário. Se estiver em meu poder alguma cabra que não seja salpicada ou pintada, e algum cordeiro que não seja preto, poderá considerá-los roubados.

34 Labão disse:

— De acordo. Seja como você disse.

35 Naquele mesmo dia, Labão separou todos os bodes listrados ou com manchas brancas, todas as cabras que tinham pintas ou manchas brancas e todos os cordeiros pretos e os pôs aos cuidados dos seus filhos. 36 Afastou-se, então, de Jacó, à distância equivalente a três dias de viagem, e Jacó continuou a apascentar o restante dos rebanhos de Labão.

37 Jacó pegou galhos verdes de estoraque, amendoeira e plátano e neles fez listras brancas, descascando-os parcialmente e expondo, assim, a parte branca interna dos galhos. 38 Depois, fixou os galhos descascados nos bebedouros, para que ficassem na frente dos rebanhos quando viessem beber água. Na época do cio, os rebanhos vinham beber e 39 se acasalavam diante dos galhos; assim, geravam filhotes listrados, salpicados e pintados. 40 Jacó separava os filhotes do rebanho dos demais e os punha de frente para os animais listrados e pretos de Labão. Desse modo, foi formando o seu próprio rebanho, que separou do de Labão. 41 Toda vez que as fêmeas mais fortes estavam no cio, Jacó colocava os galhos nos bebedouros, em frente dos animais, para que se acasalassem diante dos galhos; 42 se, porém, os animais eram fracos, não os colocava ali. Desse modo, os animais fracos ficavam para Labão, e os mais fortes, para Jacó. 43 Assim, o homem ficou extremamente rico, possuindo grandes rebanhos, servos e servas, camelos e jumentos.
