Genesis 29

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram

1 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples. 2 There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

4 Jacob asked the shepherds, "My brothers, where are you from?"

"We’re from Harran," they replied.

5 He said to them, "Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?"

"Yes, we know him," they answered.

6 Then Jacob asked them, "Is he well?"

"Yes, he is," they said, "and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep."

7 "Look," he said, "the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture."

8 "We can’t," they replied, "until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep."

9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle’s sheep. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud. 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father.

13 As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, "You are my own flesh and blood."

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, "Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be."

16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah had weak*29:17 Or delicate eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, "I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel."

19 Laban said, "It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me." 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her."

22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant.

25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?"

26 Laban replied, "It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one. 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work."

28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her attendant. 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

Jacob’s Children

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,*29:32 Reuben sounds like the Hebrew for he has seen my misery; the name means see, a son. for she said, "It is because the Lord has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now."

33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too." So she named him Simeon.*29:33 Simeon probably means one who hears.

34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he was named Levi.*29:34 Levi sounds like and may be derived from the Hebrew for attached.

35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "This time I will praise the Lord." So she named him Judah.*29:35 Judah sounds like and may be derived from the Hebrew for praise. Then she stopped having children.

Jacó chega a Padã-Arã

1 Então, Jacó seguiu viagem e chegou à terra dos povos do oriente. 2 Olhando ao redor, viu um poço no campo e três rebanhos de ovelhas deitadas por perto, pois os rebanhos bebiam daquele poço, que era tapado por uma grande pedra. 3 Por isso, quando todos os rebanhos se reuniam ali, os pastores rolavam a pedra da boca do poço e davam água às ovelhas. Depois, recolocavam a pedra no lugar sobre o poço.

4 Jacó perguntou aos pastores:

— Meus irmãos, de onde vocês são?

— Somos de Harã — responderam.

5 — Vocês conhecem Labão, neto de Naor? — perguntou-lhes Jacó.

Eles responderam:

— Sim, nós o conhecemos.

6 Então, Jacó perguntou:

— Ele vai bem?

Eles responderam:

— Sim, vai bem. Veja! Ali vem Raquel, a filha dele, com as ovelhas.

7 Ele disse:

— Olhem, ainda é pleno dia, e não é hora de recolher os rebanhos. Deem de beber às ovelhas e levem-nas de volta para pastar.

8 Eles, porém, responderam:

— Não podemos, enquanto todos os rebanhos não se agruparem e a pedra não for removida da boca do poço. Só então daremos de beber às ovelhas.

9 Ele ainda estava conversando, quando chegou Raquel com as ovelhas do seu pai, pois ela era pastora. 10 Quando Jacó viu Raquel, filha de Labão, irmão da sua mãe, e as ovelhas de Labão, aproximou-se, removeu a pedra da boca do poço e deu de beber às ovelhas do seu tio Labão. 11 Depois, Jacó beijou Raquel e começou a chorar bem alto. 12 Ele contou a Raquel que era parente do pai dela e filho de Rebeca. Então, ela foi correndo contar tudo ao seu pai.

13 Logo que Labão ouviu as notícias acerca de Jacó, o seu sobrinho, correu ao seu encontro. Ele o abraçou e beijou, levando-o para casa. Jacó contou-lhe tudo o que havia ocorrido. 14 Então, Labão lhe disse:

— Você é osso dos meus ossos e carne da minha carne.

Jacó casa com Lia e com Raquel

Já fazia um mês que Jacó estava na casa de Labão, 15 quando este lhe disse:

— Será que vai trabalhar de graça só por ser meu parente? Diga-me qual deve ser o seu salário.

16 Ora, Labão tinha duas filhas; o nome da mais velha era Lia, e o da mais nova, Raquel. 17 Lia tinha olhos meigos,*29.17 Ou tenros. mas Raquel era bonita e atraente. 18 Como Jacó amava Raquel, disse:

— Trabalharei para o senhor sete anos em troca de Raquel, a sua filha mais nova.

19 Labão respondeu:

— Será melhor dá-la a você do que a outro homem. Fique aqui comigo. 20 Então, Jacó trabalhou sete anos por Raquel, mas lhe pareceram poucos dias, pelo tanto que a amava.

21 Então, Jacó disse a Labão:

— Entregue-me a minha mulher. Cumpri o prazo previsto e quero deitar-me com ela.

22 Labão reuniu todo o povo daquele lugar e deu uma festa. 23 Quando a noite chegou, no entanto, trouxe a sua filha Lia e a entregou a Jacó, que se deitou com ela. 24 Labão também entregou a serva Zilpa à sua filha, para que ficasse a serviço dela.

25 Ao amanhecer, lá estava Lia. Então, Jacó disse a Labão:

— Que foi que o senhor me fez? Não foi por Raquel que eu trabalhei para o senhor? Por que o senhor me enganou?

26 Labão respondeu:

— Aqui não é costume entregar em casamento a filha mais nova antes da mais velha. 27 Complete a semana de núpcias desta filha, e daremos a você também a outra, em troca de mais sete anos de trabalho para mim.

28 Foi isso que Jacó fez. Quando completou a semana de núpcias da primeira, Labão lhe deu a sua filha Raquel por mulher. 29 Para a filha Raquel, Labão deu a serva Bila, a fim de que ficasse a serviço dela. 30 Jacó deitou-se também com Raquel, a quem amava mais do que Lia, e trabalhou para Labão outros sete anos.

Os filhos de Jacó

31 Quando o Senhor viu que Lia era desprezada, tornou-a fértil; Raquel, porém, era estéril. 32 Lia engravidou, deu à luz um filho e deu-lhe o nome de Rúben,*29.32 Em hebraico, Rúben soa como a frase ele viu a minha miséria e significa veja: um filho. pois dizia: "O Senhor viu a minha miséria. Agora certamente o meu marido me amará".

33 Lia engravidou de novo e, quando deu à luz outro filho, disse: "Porque o Senhor ouviu que eu sou desprezada, deu-me também este". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Simeão.*29.33 Simeão provavelmente significa aquele que ouve.

34 De novo, engravidou e, quando deu à luz mais um filho, disse: "Agora finalmente o meu marido se apegará a mim, porque já lhe dei três filhos". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Levi.*29.34 Em hebraico, Levi soa como o verbo que significa apegar.

35 Engravidou ainda outra vez e, quando deu à luz mais outro filho, disse: "Desta vez, louvarei ao Senhor". Por isso, deu-lhe o nome de Judá.*29.35 Em hebraico, Judá soa como o verbo que significa louvar. Depois disso, parou de ter filhos.
