Genesis 3

The Fall

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?"

2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ "

4 "You will not certainly die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?"

10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"

12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?"

The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,

"Cursed are you above all livestock

and all wild animals!

You will crawl on your belly

and you will eat dust

all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity

between you and the woman,

and between your offspring*3:15 Or seed and hers;

he will crush*3:15 Or strike your head,

and you will strike his heel."

16 To the woman he said,

"I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;

with painful labor you will give birth to children.

Your desire will be for your husband,

and he will rule over you."

17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

"Cursed is the ground because of you;

through painful toil you will eat food from it

all the days of your life.

18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,

and you will eat the plants of the field.

19 By the sweat of your brow

you will eat your food

until you return to the ground,

since from it you were taken;

for dust you are

and to dust you will return."

20 Adam*3:20 Or The man named his wife Eve,*3:20 Eve probably means living. because she would become the mother of all the living.

21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side*3:24 Or placed in front of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

A queda do ser humano

1 Ora, a serpente era o mais astuto de todos os animais do campo que o Senhor Deus tinha feito. Esta perguntou à mulher:

— Foi isto mesmo que Deus disse: "Não comam de nenhuma das árvores do jardim"?

2 A mulher respondeu à serpente:

— Podemos comer do fruto das árvores do jardim, 3 mas Deus disse: "Não comam do fruto da árvore que está no meio do jardim nem toquem nele; do contrário, vocês morrerão".

4 A serpente disse à mulher:

— Certamente não morrerão! 5 É que Deus sabe que, no dia em que comerem dele, os seus olhos se abrirão, e vocês serão como Deus, conhecedores do bem e do mal.

6 Quando a mulher viu que a árvore era boa para alimento, atraente aos olhos e desejável para dela se obter sabedoria, tomou do seu fruto e o comeu; também o deu ao seu marido, que estava com ela, e ele o comeu. 7 Então, os olhos dos dois se abriram, e perceberam que estavam nus. Por isso, entrelaçaram folhas de figueira e fizeram algo para cobrir-se.

8 Quando o homem e a sua mulher ouviram o som do Senhor Deus, que caminhava pelo jardim ao sopro do vento do dia, esconderam-se da presença do Senhor Deus entre as árvores do jardim. 9 O Senhor Deus, porém, chamou o homem e perguntou:

— Onde você está?

10 Ele respondeu:

— Eu te ouvi no jardim e fiquei com medo porque estava nu; por isso, me escondi.

11 Deus perguntou:

— Quem contou a você que estava nu? Você comeu da árvore da qual ordenei a você que não comesse?

12 O homem disse:

— Foi a mulher que me deste para estar comigo que me deu do fruto da árvore, e eu comi.

13 Então, o Senhor Deus perguntou à mulher:

— O que foi que você fez?

A mulher respondeu:

— A serpente me enganou, e eu comi.

14 Então, o Senhor Deus declarou à serpente:

"Por ter feito isso,

maldita é você entre todos os animais de rebanho

e entre todos os animais do campo!

Você rastejará sobre o seu ventre

e comerá pó todos os dias da sua vida.

15 Porei inimizade entre você e a mulher,

entre a sua descendência*3.15 Hebraico: semente… semente. e a descendência*3.15 Ou e o descendente. dela,

que ferirá a sua cabeça,

e você lhe ferirá o calcanhar".

16 À mulher, ele declarou:

"Multiplicarei intensamente as suas dores de parto;

com dores você dará à luz filhos.

O seu desejo será contra o seu marido,*3.16 Ou será para o seu marido.

mas ele a dominará".

17 Finalmente, declarou ao homem:

"Visto que você deu ouvidos à voz da sua mulher

e comeu da árvore da qual ordenei a você que não comesse,

maldita é a terra por sua causa;

com dores você comerá dela

todos os dias da sua vida.

18 Ela lhe fará brotar espinhos e ervas daninhas,

e você comerá as plantas do campo.

19 Com o suor do seu rosto,

você comerá o seu pão,

até que volte à terra,

visto que dela foi tirado;

porque você é pó

e ao pó voltará".

20 Adão deu à sua mulher o nome Eva,*3.20 Eva provavelmente significa viver. pois ela seria mãe de todo ser vivente.

21 O Senhor Deus fez roupas de pele para o homem e a sua mulher e os vestiu.

22 Então, o Senhor Deus disse:

— Vejam que o homem se tornou como um de nós, conhecendo o bem e o mal. Não se deve permitir que ele estenda a mão e tome também da árvore da vida, coma e viva para sempre.

23 Por isso, o Senhor Deus o expulsou do jardim do Éden para cultivar a terra da qual fora tirado. 24 Depois de expulsar o homem, colocou querubins a leste do jardim do Éden e uma espada flamejante que se movia de um lado para outro, guardando o caminho que levava à árvore da vida.
