1 E Jacob estabeleceu-se na terra de Canaã, onde o seu pai vivia.
2 José, filho de Jacob, tinha agora 17 anos. A sua actividade era de, na companhia dos seus irmãos, filhos de Bila e de Zilpa, apascentar os rebanhos do pai. Mas José vinha contar a este coisas más que os irmãos praticavam.
3 Israel preferia José aos outros filhos, porque nascera quando já não era novo. E um dia resolveu dar-lhe uma túnica de cores vivas e garridas. Os irmãos deram-se conta da parcialidade do pai em relação a José, e passaram a querer-lhe mal; eram incapazes de lhe falar com bons modos.
5 Certa noite José teve um sonho, e aconteceu que o foi contar aos irmãos; estes, evidentemente, passaram a querer-lhe ainda mais mal.
6 Ouçam o meu sonho!, pediu-lhes. Estávamos no campo atando molhos e o meu ficou de pé, enquanto os vossos o rodeavam e se inclinavam perante ele!
8 Ah, sim? Então é porque queres ser o nosso rei, não é isso? Queres mandar na gente! E odiaram-no, não só por causa do sentido do sonho, mas até pelas palavras e pela forma como contou aquilo.
9 Mais tarde teve novo sonho e foi de novo contá-lo aos outros: Olhem, sonhei outro sonho! Desta vez era o Sol, a Lua e onze estrelas que se inclinavam na minha frente! Mas agora foi também contar o sonho ao pai. E este repreendeu-o: Que é que isso quer dizer?! Não me digas que eu, a tua mãe e os teus irmãos ainda viremos a inclinarmo-nos na tua presença!
11 Os irmãos estavam furiosos; contudo o pai reflectia intimamente no sentido daquilo.
12 Certa vez os irmãos de José foram levar os rebanhos a pastar para os lados de Siquem.
13 Uns dias depois Israel chamou José e disse-lhe: Os teus irmãos foram com os rebanhos a Siquem. Vai lá ver como é que eles estão, se anda tudo bem com os rebanhos, e vem-me dizer.Pois sim, vou já, respondeu. Assim partiu do vale de Hebrom em direcção a Siquem.
15 Um homem reparou que ele andava perdido por aquelas terras e perguntou-lhe o que é que procurava.
16 É os meus irmãos e os rebanhos. Sabes onde estão?
17 Sim. Realmente já aqui não estão. Ouvi-lhes dizer que iam para Dotã. José seguiu nessa direcção e encontrou-os lá.
18 Mas quando eles o viram aproximar-se, tendo-o reconhecido à distância, combinaram matá-lo!
19 Cá vem o sonhador-mor! Vamos matá-lo. Lançamo-lo num destes poços sem água e dizemos ao pai que foi uma fera que o comeu. Agora é que vamos ver o que é feito dos seus sonhos!
21 Mas Rúben queria poupar-lhe a vida: Não. Não lhe tiremos a vida. Não vamos agora derramar sangue. Lancemo-lo apenas no poço e assim virá a morrer sem que lhe toquemos. (Porque tinha a intenção de ir lá depois tirá-lo e entregá-lo ao pai.)
23 Então, quando José chegou junto deles, tiraram-lhe a túnica de cores e lançaram-no dentro do poço, que aliás não tinha água. Depois foram comer. De repente repararam numa caravana de camelos que se aproximava, vindo na sua direcção. Eram negociantes ismaelitas que transportavam gomas, especiarias e ervas raras, de Gileade para o Egipto.
26 Ouçam lá, disse Judá aos outros, e se vendêssemos José a estes ismaelitas. Porque é que o havíamos de matar e ficar com esse peso na consciência? É muito melhor isso do que ficarmos com a responsabilidade da sua morte; vendo bem as coisas, sempre é nosso irmão! E os outros concordaram. Assim, quando os comerciantes ismaelitas (ou midianitas) chegaram, foram tirar José do poço e venderam-no por vinte peças de prata, tendo sido levado dessa forma para o Egipto.
29 Entretanto Rúben, que não se encontrava presente quando o irmão foi vendido, veio ao poço para tirar de lá José. E quando verificou que já ali não estava, rasgou as roupas que vestia.
30 Desapareceu o moço! E agora, o que é que eu faço?, lamentavase junto dos irmãos. Estes mataram um cabrito, sujaram com o sangue a túnica de José, e mandaram-na para o pai, pedindo-lhe que a identificasse.Encontrámos esta túnica. Não será a de José? O pai reconheceu-a imediatamente.Sim, é a túnica do meu filho. Foi certamente um animal feroz que o desfez em pedaços e que o tragou.
34 Então Israel rasgou as suas vestimentas, envolveu o corpo num saco , lamentou e chorou a morte do filho durante muitas semanas. A família bem tentava consolá-lo mas era em vão.Hei-de morrer chorando o meu filho!, dizia ele a chorar.
36 Enquanto isto, no Egipto os negociantes venderam José a Potifar, alta individualidade da corte de Faraó, chefe militar da sua casa e responsável pelo palácio real.
1 So Jacob dwelt in the land of the sojournings of his father,in the land of Canaan.
2 These, are the generations of JacobJoseph, when seventeen years old, was shepherding with his brethren among the flocks, and, he, being a youth, was with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah wives of his father,so then Joseph brought in the talk about themsomething bad, unto their father.
3 Now, Israel, loved Joseph more than any of his sons, because he was to him, the son of his old age, and he had made him, a long tunic.
4 So his brethren saw that their father loved him, more than any of his brethren, and they hated him, and could not bid him prosper,
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and told it to his brethren, and they went on yet more to hate him.
6 And he said unto them, Hear ye I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
7 Lo! then, we, were binding sheaves in the midst of the field, when lo my sheaf rose up, yea and took its stand,and lo! round about came your sheaves, and bowed themselves down to my sheaf.
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou, reign, over us, shalt thou, have dominion over us? So they went on yet more to hate him, because of his dreams and because of his words.
9 Then dreamed he, yet another, dream, and related it to his brethren, and said:Lo! I have dreamed a dream, yet again, Lo! then, the sun and the moon, and eleven stars, were bowing themselves down to me.
10 So he related it unto his father, and unto his brethren,and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream which thou hast dreamed? Shall we, indeed come in, I, and thy mother and thy brethren, to bow our-selves down to thee to the earth?
11 Then were his brethren jealous of him, but his father, marked the word.
12 Now his brethren went their way,to feed their fathers flock in Shechem.
13 So Israel said unto Joseph Are not, thy brethren, feeding the flock in Shechem? Come on! and let me send thee unto them. And he said to him Behold me!
14 So he said to himGo, I pray thee, look after the welfare of thy brethren, and the welfare of the flock, and bring me back word. And he sent him from the vale of Hebron, and he came in towards Shechem.
15 And a man found him, and to! he was wandering about in the field, so the man asked him sayingWhat seekest thou?
16 And he said, My brethren, am, I, seeking,do tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding their flock.
17 And the man said, They have broken up from hence, for I heard them saying Let us go our way towards Dothan. So Joseph went after his brethren, and found them, in Dothan.
18 And they saw him afar off,and, ere yet he drew near unto them, they conspired against him, to put him to death.
19 And they said each man unto his brother, Lo! that master of dreams yonder, coming in!
20 Now, therefore, come! let us slay him and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say A cruel beast, hath devoured him,And let us see what will become of his dreams.
21 And Reuben heard it, and rescued him out of their hand, and said Let us not smite him, so as to take his life!
22 And Reuben said unto them Do not shed blood! Cast him into this pit, which is in the wilderness, but put not forth, a hand, against him! that he might rescue him out of their hand, to restore him unto his father.
23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come in unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph of his tunic, the long tunic which was upon him,
24 and took him, and cast him into the pit, but the pit, was empty, there was in it no water.
25 And when they had sat down to eat bread, they lifted up their eyes and looked, and lo! a caravan of Ishmaelites, coming in from Gilead,and, their camels, were bearing tragacanth gum, and balsam and cistus-gum, they were going their way, to take them down to Egypt.
26 So Judah said unto his brethren,What profit that we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites; but let not, out own hand, be upon him, for our own brother, our own flesh, is he And his brethren hearkened.
28 And there passed by certain Midianites travelling merchants, so they drew forth and uplifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites, for twenty pieces of silver,and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit, and lo Joseph was not in the pit, so he rent his clothes;
30 and returned unto his brethren, and said,The, lad, is not! And, I, oh where can I, go?
31 And they took Josephs tunic,and slaughtered a buck of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood;
32 and sent the long tunic and brought it in unto their father, and said This, have we found! Examine, we pray thee, whether it is the tunic of thy son, or not!
33 So he examined it, and saidThe tunic of my son! A cruel beast hath devoured him,torn in piecestorn in pieces, is Joseph!
34 And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins,and mourned over his son many days.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to console him but he refused to be consoled, and saidSurely I will go down unto my son mourning to hades! And his father wept for him.
36 Now, the Midianites, sold him into Egypt,to Potiphar courtier of Pharaoh, chief of the royal executioners.
