1 Após isso Deus disse a Jacob para ir até Betel e se estabelecer lá: e levanta lá um altar, acrescentou o Senhor, para adorar Deus que te apareceu quando fugias do teu irmão Esaú.

2 Jacob deu também instruções a toda a sua gente para destruirem os ídolos que tivessem trazido consigo, que se purificassem e pusessem roupa limpa.

3 Porque vamos para Betel, disse, e tenho a intenção de construir lá um altar a Deus, que respondeu às minhas orações naquela altura em que atravessava por uma grande angústia e tristeza, e que sempre esteve comigo por onde tenho andado.

4 Dessa forma deram a Jacob todos os ídolos que traziam, como pendentes das pulseiras, brincos nas orelhas, e enterraram tudo debaixo dum carvalho perto de Siquem. Depois partiram dali. E Deus semeou o terror sobre as povoações de toda aquela região de tal forma que não houve ninguém que tivesse coragem para os perseguir. Por fim chegaram a Luz, também chamada Betel, em Canaã. E Jacob erigiu um altar e chamou-lhe Deus de Betel, porque tinha sido ali mesmo que Deus lhe aparecera quando fugia de Esaú.

8 Pouco depois faleceu Débora, a velha ama de Rebeca, tendo sido enterrada sob um carvalho num vale um pouco abaixo de Betel e a que puseram o nome de Carvalho do Choro.

9 Depois da passagem de Jacob por Betel, a caminho de Padan-Arã, Deus apareceu-lhe uma vez mais e abençoou-o, tendo-lhe dito: Não te chamarás mais Jacob , mas Israel .

11 Eu sou o Deus cujo poder é sem limites. Farei que te multipliques e que te tornes numa grande nação, mais até - em muitas nações. Muitos reis se encontrarão entre os teus descendentes. Dar-te-ei a terra que ofereci a Abraão e a Isaque; não só a ti como aos teus descendentes.

13 Após esse aparecimento Jacob fez uma coluna de pedra no lugar em que Deus lhe aparecera, derramou vinho sobre ela, como oferta a Deus, e ungiu-a com óleo. Chamou a esse pilar Betel, porque o Senhor lhe tinha falado ali.

16 Deixando Betel, ele e os seus continuaram em direcção a Efrata (Belém). Mas Raquel começou a ter as dores de parto quando ainda estavam a uma certa distância desse local. Após um parto muito difícil, a parteira exclamou enfim: Que bom! Outro rapaz! Raquel, antes de dar o seu último suspiro - porque morreu - teve ainda tempo de chamar ao menino Ben-oni . Mas o pai preferiu chamar-lhe Benjamim .

19 Foi pois desta forma que Raquel faleceu. E enterraram-na junto ao caminho de Efrata (também chamada Belém). Jacob levantou um memorial de pedras sobre o seu túmulo. Ainda lá está actualmente.

21 Israel prosseguiu a sua viagem e veio a acampar para lá da torre de Eder. Foi nessa altura que Rúben dormiu com Bila, concubina do seu pai. Contudo Jacob veio a sabê-lo.

22 São então estes os nome dos doze filhos de Jacob:

23 Os filhos de Leia: Rúben, o filho mais velho de Jacob, Simeão, Levi, Judá, Issacar e Zebulão.

24 Os filhos de Raquel: José e Benjamim.

25 Os filhos de Bila, a criada de Raquel: Dan e Naftali.

26 E os filhos de Zilpa, a criada de Leia: Gad e Aser. Estas são pois os filhos que lhe nasceram em Padan-Arã.

27 Jacob chegou por fim junto de seu pai Isaque, em Mamre, em Quiriate-Arba (agora chamada Hebrom), onde também tinha vivido Abraão.

28 Isaque morreu algum tempo depois com a avançada idade de 180 anos, tendo sido sepultado pelos seus dois filhos Esaú e Jacob.

1 Then said God unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there,and make there an altar, to the GOD who appeared unto thee, when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

2 And Jacob said unto his house, and unto all who were with him,Put away the gods of the alien which are in your midst, and purify yourselves, and change your garments;

3 And let us arise, and go up to Beth-el,that I may make there an altar to the GOD who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way that I went.

4 So they gave unto Jacob all the gods of the alien which were in their hand, and the earrings which were in their ears,and Jacob hid them under the oak, which was by Shechem.

5 And they brake up,and it came to pass that the terror of God, was on the cities which were round about them, so that they pursued not after the sons of Jacob.

6 And Jacob came in towards Luz, which was in the land of Canaan, the same, is Beth-el,he and all the people who were with him.

7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-Beth-el,because, there, God revealed himself unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother,

8 And Deborah, Rebekahs nurse died, and was buried below Beth-el, under the oak,so the name thereof was called, Allon-bacuth.

9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came in from Padan-aram,and blessed him.

10 And God said to him, Thy name, is Jacob,Thy name shall no longer he called Jacob But, Israel, shall be thy name. So he called his name, Israel.

11 And God said to himI, am GOD Almighty! Be fruitful and multiply, A nation, and a multitude of nations shall spring from thee,And, kings, from thy loins, shall come forth;

12 And, the land which I gave to Abraham and to Isaac, To thee, will I give it,And to thy seed after thee, will I give the land.

13 And God went up from him at the place where he had spoken with him.

14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone,and he poured out thereon a drink-offering, and poured thereon oil.

15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him, Beth-el.

16 Then brake they up from Beth-el, and it came to pass when there was yet a stretch of country, to enter into Ephrath, that Rachel was in childbirth, and had hard-labour in her child-birth.

17 So it came to pass when she was in hard-labour in her child-birth, that the midwife said to herDo not fear, for this also of thine, is, a son.

18 And it came to pass when her soul was going forthfor she died, that she called his name Ben-oni,but, his father, called him, Ben-jamin.

19 So Rachel died,and was buried on the way to Ephrath, the same, is Bethlehem.

20 And Jacob set up a pillar, over her grave,the same, isThe Pillar of the Grave of Rachel until this day.

21 Then Israel brake up,and spread his tent at a distance from Migdal Eder.

22 And it came to pass while Israel inhabited that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his fathers concubine; and Israel heard of it. And so the Sons of Israel came to be Twelve.

23 The sons of Leah, the firstborn of Jacob, Reuben,And Simeon and Levi and Judah, and Issachar and Zebulon:

24 The sons of Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin:

25 And the sons of Bilhah, handmaid of Rachel, Dan, and Naphtali:

26 And the sons of Zilpah, handmaid of Leah, Gad and Asher: These, are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him, in Padan-aram.

27 Then came Jacob unto Isaac his father, to Mature, the city of Arba,the same, is Hebron, where had sojourned Abraham and Isaac.

28 And the days of Isaac came to ben hundred and eighty years.

29 And Isaac breathed his last, and died and was added unto his people, old, and satisfied with days,and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
