1 Jacob, ao ouvir que havia alimento no Egipto, disse aos filhos: Para que é que estão aí todos a olharem-se uns para os outros? Eu ouvi que havia alimentos disponíveis no Egipto. Vão já e comprem o que puderem, para não morrermos de fome!
3 Assim desceram os dez irmãos mais velhos de José ao Egipto para comprar comida. Mas Jacob não quis que o mais novo, Benjamim, fosse com eles com medo que lhe viesse a acontecer algum acidente. E chegaram os filhos de Israel ao Egipto juntamente, aliás, com muita outra gente das terras vizinhas, na intenção de comprar trigo, porque a fome apertava duramente tanto em Canaã como nos outros sítios.
6 Ora, visto que José era o governador geral de todo o Egipto, responsável pela venda das provisões, foi a ele que os seus irmãos se chegaram, inclinando-se-lhe na frente, profundamente, com o rosto em terra. José reconheceu-os logo, mas não se manifestou.Donde é que vêm?, interpelou-os ele asperamente.De Canaã. Viemos em busca de trigo.
8 E José lembrou-se dos sonhos que tinha tido havia já tanto tempo. Mas continuou: Vocês são mas é espias! Vieram cá para ver como é que a terra ficou enfraquecida com a fome.
10 Não, não senhor!, exclamaram. Viemos unicamente à procura de alimentos. Somos todos irmãos e gente honesta. Não somos espias, de maneira nenhuma!
12 Isso é que são!, retorquiu-lhes, insistindo. Vieram para espiar a nossa fraqueza.
13 Senhor Governador, nós garantimos-lhe que somos apenas uma família de doze irmãos; o nosso pai está lá em Canaã; o nosso irmão mais novo ficou com ele, e um de nós já morreu.
14 Ah, sim? E afinal, o que é que isso me garante que não são espias? Bom. Vamos verificar se tudo isso que me dizem é verdade. Garanto-vos, pela vida do próprio Faraó, que não deixarão o Egipto enquanto o vosso irmão mais novo não vier aqui. Que um de vocês vá lá e o traga. Os outros ficarão aqui presos. Assim havemos de verificar a verdade de tudo isso. Se se chegar à conclusão de que não têm nenhum irmão mais novo é porque são realmente espias.
17 E pô-los sob a vigilância de um guarda, todos juntos, durante três dias. Ao terceiro dia disse-lhes: Eu sou uma pessoa que respeita Deus, por isso vou dar-vos uma oportunidade de se defenderem a si próprios desta acusação. Terão assim ocasião de mostrar se são gente honrada. Portanto ficará apenas um em detenção, e os outros poderão ir-se embora e levar o trigo às famílias; mas na condição de me trazerem aqui o vosso irmão mais novo. Dessa forma saberei se me dizem ou não a verdade. Se assim for, poupar-vos-ei.Eles concordaram. E falando uns com os outros diziam: Isto tudo aconteceu-nos por causa do que fizemos a José. Víamos bem o terror e angústia em que ele estava, como nos pedia aflitivamente que não lhe fizéssemos mal, e não nos importámos com isso!
22 Eu não vos dizia?, intervinha Rúben. Insisti para que não lhe fizessem nada, e não me ligaram. Agora vamos ter de dar contas pela sua vida!
23 Evidentemente que não pensavam sequer que José, que continuava ali perto deles, os entendia. Aliás para comunicarem com ele, utilizavam um intérprete. Mas José teve de retirar-se, porque precisava de chorar sem que o vissem. Depois voltou outra vez e ele próprio escolheu Simeão de entre os outros e aprisionou-o na frente dos irmãos.
25 Em seguida deu ordens aos criados para lhes encherem os sacos de trigo, mas que lhes pusessem também o dinheiro do pagamento dentro de cada saco, logo ao de cima; e além disso que lhes fossem fornecidas provisões para a viagem.
26 Carregaram então os animais e partiram para casa com os sacos de trigo. Quando pararam de noite, um deles abriu o saco para tirar uma porção de grão para dar aos jumentos, e viu o dinheiro logo à entrada do saco!
28 Olhem!, disse para os outros. Devolveram-me o dinheiro. Está aqui! Ficaram cheios de medo, e foi a tremer de susto que disseram uns para os outros: Mas que é isto que Deus nos tem estado a fazer?
29 Chegaram assim até à casa do seu pai, na terra de Canaã, e contaramlhe tudo.
30 O governador, ministro do rei, falou-nos muito asperamente e tomou-nos por espias. Nós bem lhe dissemos que não, que não o éramos de maneira nenhuma, que éramos gente de bem e nunca espiões. Que éramos doze irmãos, filhos do mesmo pai, que um deles tinha morrido, e que o mais novo tinha ficado em casa com o pai.
33 Então o homem disse-nos que havia uma maneira de saber se o que lhe contávamos era certo: que deixássemos lá um dos nossos irmãos enquanto trazíamos para casa o alimento, mas que devíamos levar-lhe lá depois o irmão mais novo. Que assim é que havia de ver se éramos espiões ou gente honesta; e se provássemos que falávamos verdade então que nos devolveria o irmão retido lá e que poderíamos ir lá quantas vezes quiséssemos comprar o que fosse preciso.
35 Ao esvaziarem cada um o seu saco, depararam então com o respectivo dinheiro de paga, dentro das bolsinhas, logo ao de cima. E ficaram todos, o pai e eles, transidos de susto!
36 Jacob exclamou: Vocês querem-me desfilhar! José já não existe. Simeão, já não o vejo. Querem-me levar agora Benjamim. É de mais! Tudo contra mim!
37 E Rúben respondeu ao pai: Fica com os meus dois filhos, e tira-lhes a vida se eu não te trouxer Benjamim de volta. Fico responsável por ele.
38 Mas Jacob replicou: Não. O meu filho não irá convosco, porque José já morreu, e dos filhos da sua mãe só ele ficou. Se lhe acontecesse alguma coisa a minha vida não resistiria.
1 Then saw Jacob that there was corn in Egypt,and Jacob said to his sons, Wherefore look ye one at another?
2 And he said, Lo I have heard that there is corn in Egypt,Go down thither and buy corn for us from thence, that we may live and not die.
3 So Josephs ten brethren went down,to buy corn from the Egyptians;
4 but, Benjamin, Josephs own brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren,for he said, Lest there befall him any mischief.
5 Thus came in the sons of Israel, to buy corn in the midst of them that camefor the famine was in the land of Canaan.
6 Now, Josephhe, it was, that was in power over the land, he, it was that was selling corn to all the people of the land,so Josephs brethren came in, and bowed themselves down to him, with their faces to the earth.
7 And Joseph beheld his brethren and recognised them,and made himself a stranger unto them and spake with them harsh things and said unto themWhence have ye come in? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.
8 And Joseph recognised his brethren,whereas they, recognised him not.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed regarding them,so he said unto themSpies, are, ye! to see the nakedness of the land, have ye come in!
10 And they said unto him, Nay, my lord,but, thy servants, are come to buy food.
11 All of us, are, sons of one man,honest men, are we: thy servants are not, spies.
12 And he said unto him,Nay! but, the nakedness of the land, are ye come in to see.
13 And they said: We, thy twelve servants, are, brethren, sons of one man in the and of Canaan,and lo! the youngest: is with our father this day, and, the one, is not!
14 And Joseph said unto them,The very thing, that I spake unto you, sayingSpies, are, ye.
15 Hereby, shall ye be proved,By the life of Pharaoh, ye shall not go forth from hence, save only by the coming in of your youngest brother hither.
16 Sendfrom among youone that he may fetch your brother, but be, ye, held as prisoners, that your words may be proved whether, truth, is with you,and, if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely, spies, ye are.
17 So he drew them all together into ward, for three days.
18 And Joseph said unto them on the third day, This, do and live,God himself, do, I, revere.
19 If ye, are, honest men, one brother of you shall be kept as a prisoner in your house of ward,but, ye, go, take in corn for the famine of your houses;
20 and your youngest brother, shall ye bring in unto me, that your words may be confirmed, and ye die not. And they did so.
21 And they said each man unto his brotherVerily guilty, we are, respecting our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul when he appealed unto us for favour and we hearkened not,therefore, hath come in unto us this distress.
22 And Reuben responded to them, sayingSpake I not unto you saying, Do not sin against the child! And ye hearkened not? His very blood, therefore lo! it is required.
23 But, they, knew not that Joseph was hearkening,for, the interpreter, was between them.
24 So he turned away from them, and wept,then came back unto them and spake unto them, and took away from them Simeon, and bound him prisoner before their eyes.
25 Then commanded Joseph that their bags should be filled with corn, and their silver be returned each mans into his sack, and provision be given for the journey,and it was done to them thus.
26 So they lifted up their corn on their asses,and went their way, from thence.
27 And the first opened his sack to give fodder to his ass at the inn,and beheld his silver, yea there, it was in the mouth of his sack!
28 So he said unto his brethren My silver hath been returned, yea verily, there it is in my sack! Then went forth their heart and they turned tremblingeach man unto his brother saying. Wharf is this that God hath done to us?
29 So they came in unto Jacob their father to the land of Canaan,and told him all that had befallen them saying:
30 The man that is lord of the land spake unto us harsh things,and then delivered us up. as spies of the land.
31 And we said unto him Honest men, are, we,we are not spies!
32 Twelve brethren, are, we, sons of our father,the one, is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.
33 Then said the man the lord of the land unto us, Hereby, shall I get to know that honest men, ye are,One brother of you, leave ye remaining with me, and corn for the famine of your houses, take ye and go your way;
34 And bring ye in your youngest brother unto me, So must I get to know that ye are, not spies, but are honest men: Your brother, will I give up to you, and with the land, shall ye traffic.
35 And it came to pass when, they, were emptying their, sacks then lo! each mans bundle of silver, was in his sack,and when they beheld their bundles of silverthey and their father, they were afraid,
36 And Jacob their father said unto them, Me, have ye bereaved,Joseph, is not, and, Simeon, is not, and Benjamin, ye would take! Against me, have happened all these things.
37 Then spake Reuben unto his father saying, My two sons, shalt thou put to death, if I bring him not unto thee,Come give him up upon my hand, and I, will restore him unto thee.
38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you,For, his brother, is dead and, he alone, is left, and as surely as there befall him any mischief by the way wherein ye go, so surely shall ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow unto hades.
