1 Eu sou um apóstolo. Não é pois a meros homens que tenho de prestar contas. Eu vi Jesus Cristo nosso Senhor com os meus próprios olhos. E as vossas vidas transformadas são o resultado do meu trabalho para Deus.2 Se, na opinião de outros, eu não sou apóstolo, certamente que o sou para vocês, porque foram ganhos para Cristo por meu intermédio.3 Esta é a minha resposta àqueles que põem em questão a minha autoridade como apóstolo.4 Será que eu não tenho direito de ter o mesmo acolhimento que os outros quando são recebidos nas vossas casas?5 Não temos nós o direito de levar connosco uma mulher crente nas viagens que fazemos, tal como os outros discípulos, e os irmãos do Senhor, e Pedro?6 Só Barnabé e eu é que devemos trabalhar para ganhar o nosso sustento?7 Qual é o soldado no exército que paga as suas próprias despesas? Alguma vez já ouviram de um agricultor que depois da colheita não tenha o direito de comer dela? Qual o pastor que não tenha direito de beber do leite do seu rebanho?8 Nem o que eu estou aqui a dizer são meras considerações humanas. Trata-se daquilo que diz a própria lei de Deus.9 Porque na lei que Deus deu a Moisés está escrito: Não ponhas uma mordaça na boca de um boi para impedir que coma do trigo que está a trilhar. Acham vocês que Deus estava a pensar apenas nos bois quando disse isto?10 Não se referia também a nós? Com certeza que sim. Tal como aqueles que lavram a terra, e que debulham o trigo devem contar em receber parte da colheita, os obreiros cristãos devem ser pagos pelos crentes a quem servem.11 Nós plantámos a semente espiritual nas vossas almas. Será pois muito esperar em troca apoio material?12 Se já o fizeram a outros que têm pregado no vosso meio, não deveríamos nós também ter esse direito, ainda mais do que eles? E no entanto nunca o reclamámos, mas sempre suprimos nós próprios às nossas necessidades. E isto para não levantar qualquer obstáculo à acção do evangelho de Cristo no vosso meio.13 Vocês bem sabem, que Deus mandou que os que servissem no seu templo tomassem para seu próprio sustento parte dos produtos alimentares que eram trazidos como oferta? Igualmente os que se ocupavam do altar de Deus recebiam para si uma porção dos alimentos que ali eram oferecidos.14 Da mesma forma, o Senhor manda que aqueles que pregam as boas novas sejam mantidos pelos que o aceitam.15 E contudo nunca vos pedi fosse o que fosse. Nem tão-pouco estou a escrever estas coisas para dar a entender que gostaria que se começasse agora a fazer assim comigo. A verdade é que preferiria morrer de fome do que perder a satisfação que me dá o facto de vos ter pregado sem nunca ter recebido nada vosso.16 Por pregar boas novas não me posso por isso vangloriar. É Deus quem me obriga a pregar. Ai de mim se não o fizer!17 Se eu estivesse a fazer isso de minha livre vontade, então receberia um salário. Mas é que foi Deus quem me impôs este dever.18 Sendo assim, qual será a minha paga? É o sentimento de profunda satisfação em anunciar as boas novas, sem encargos seja para quem for, sem reclamar aquilo que seria o meu direito.19 Assim, estando livre em relação seja a quem for, tornei-me servo de todos, para que possa levar todos a Cristo.20 Quando eu estou com os judeus torno-me um deles para que possa conduzi-los a Cristo. Quando estou entre aqueles que seguem as leis judaicas, faço o mesmo, embora eu não esteja sujeito à lei, isto para que possa conduzi-los a Cristo.21 Quando estou entre os gentios que não seguem a lei judaica, eu ligo-me com eles tanto quanto posso. Desta maneira, eu ganho a sua confiança e levo-os a Cristo. Não rejeito a lei de Deus, mas sim obedeço à lei de Cristo.22 Com aqueles cujas consciências facilmente os inquietam, procuro pôr-me no lugar deles, para os ajudar. Desse modo, seja com que tipo de pessoa for, procuro encontrar um plano comum de entendimento com ela para que, por qualquer meio, Cristo a salve.23 Faço-o não só para lhes levar o evangelho, mas também pela bênção que para mim representa vê-los vir até Cristo.24 Numa corrida, são vários os que correm, mas um só ganha o prémio. Que cada um de vocês corra como se fosse aquele que vai ganhar.25 Os atletas renunciam a tudo para afinal vir a ganhar um prémio corruptível , mas nós fazemo-lo por um prémio divino que nunca mais perderá o seu valor.26 Portanto corro direito ao alvo, não às cegas. Neste combate eu luto para ganhar. Não luto contra figuras imaginárias.27 Mas sujeito o corpo a uma dura disciplina e a um tratamento rude. De outra maneira receio que, depois de ter pregado Cristo aos outros, eu próprio não venha a ser desclassificado.

1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are ye not my work in the Lord?2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you: for ye are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.3 My answer to them that examine me is this,4 Have we not power to eat and to drink?5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?6 Or I only and Barnabas, have we not power to forbear working?7 Who goeth a warfare at any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of its fruit? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?8 Do I say these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?10 Or saith he this altogether for our sakes? for our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.11 If we have sown to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?12 If others are partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.13 Do ye not know that they who minister about holy things live from the things of the temple, and they who wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they who preach the gospel should live by the gospel.15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done to me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of: for necessity is laid upon me; and woe is to me, if I preach not the gospel!17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed to me.18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my power in the gospel.19 For though I am free from all men, yet I have made myself servant to all, that I might gain the more.20 And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.22 To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak: I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.23 And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.24 Know ye not, that they who run in a race, all run, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so I fight, not as one that beateth the air:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast-away.
