1 Mannen låg med*4:1låg medOrdagrant: "kände" (hebreiskt uttryck för sexuell gemenskap, även i 4:17, etc). sin hustru Eva, och hon blev havande och födde Kain. Då sade hon: "Jag har fått*4:1Kain … fåttNamnet Kain liknar hebr. kaníti, "fått/förvärvat". Han nämns i 1 Joh 3:12 och Jud vers 11 som ett avskräckande exempel. en man från Herren*4:1från HERRENAnnan översättning: "med HERRENS hjälp", eller "nämligen HERRENS man", dvs den som utlovades i 3:15.."*4:1AbelBetyder "vindpust, förgänglighet" (jfr Pred 1:2). Som oskyldigt dödad framhålls han i Hebreerbrevet som en förebild till Kristus (Hebr 12:24).

2 Hon födde en son till, Abel, Kains bror. Abel blev herde och Kain blev jordbrukare.

3 Efter en tid hände sig att Kain bar fram en offergåva åt Herren av markens gröda. 4 *Hebr 11:4. Även Abel bar fram sin gåva av det förstfödda i sin hjord, av djurens fett. Och Herren såg till Abel och hans offer*4:4såg till Abel och hans offerHebr 11:4 förklarar: "Genom tron bar Abel fram ett bättre offer än Kain", alltså ett offerlamm som förebild till Kristus (jfr 3:21, 22:7, 2 Mos 12:21f, Jes 53:7, Joh 1:29)., 5 men till Kain och hans offer såg han inte.

Då blev Kain mycket vred och hans blick blev mörk. 6 Och Herren sade till Kain: "Varför är du vred och varför är din blick så mörk? 7 *Rom 6:12. Är det inte så att om du gör det som är gott, ser du frimodigt upp, men om du inte gör det som är gott, då lurar synden vid dörren. Den har begär till dig, men du ska råda över den."

Kain talade med sin bror Abel*4:8talade med sin bror AbelMånga handskrifter och antika översättningar tillägger: "Låt oss gå ut på marken.", och medan de var ute på marken överföll Kain sin bror och dödade honom. 9 Och Herren sade till Kain: "Var är din bror Abel?" Han svarade: "Jag vet inte. Ska jag hålla reda på min bror?" 10 *1 Mos 9:5f, Hebr 12:24. Då sade han: "Vad har du gjort? Hör, din brors blod ropar till mig från marken! 11 Nu är du förbannad mer än den jord som har öppnat sin mun för att ta emot din brors blod av din hand. 12 När du brukar jorden ska den inte längre ge dig sin gröda. Rotlös och hemlös ska du vara på jorden."

13 Kain sade då till Herren: "Mitt brott är för stort för att förlåtas*4:13förlåtasAnnan översättning: "bäras".. 14 *Job 15:20f. Se, i dag driver du mig bort från åkerjorden, och jag är dold för ditt ansikte. Rotlös och hemlös blir jag på jorden, och vem som helst som möter mig kan döda mig." 15 Men Herren sade till honom: "Kain ska bli hämnad sju gånger om, vem som än dödar honom." Och Herren satte ett tecken*4:15satte ett teckenJfr liknande skyddstecken i Hes 9:4, Upp 7:3. på Kain så att ingen som mötte honom skulle döda honom.

16 Så gick Kain bort från Herrens ansikte och bosatte sig i landet Nod*4:16NodBetyder "hemlös" (jfr vers 14)., öster om Eden.

17 Kain låg med sin hustru, och hon blev havande och födde Henok. Och Kain byggde en stad och kallade den Henok efter sin son.

18 Åt Henok föddes Irad, och Irad blev far till Mehujael. Mehujael blev far till Metushael, och Metushael blev far till Lemek.

19 Lemek tog sig två hustrur, den ena hette Ada och den andra Silla. 20 Ada födde Jabal. Han blev stamfar till dem som bor i tält och är boskapsskötare.

21 Hans bror hette Jubal. Han blev stamfar till alla dem som spelar harpa och flöjt*4:21flöjtBenflöjten är det tidigaste instrument som påträffats arkeologiskt..

22 Silla födde också en son, Tubal-Kain*4:22Tubal-KainNamnet Tubal (10:2) förknippas med Taurusbergen i östra nuvarande Turkiet. Där har metallföremål påträffats redan från stenålderstid, då det förekom kallsmide av ren koppar och meteoritjärn.. Han var smed och gjorde alla slags redskap av koppar och järn. Tubal-Kains syster hette Naama.

23 Lemek sade till sina hustrur:

"Ada och Silla, hör på mig!

Ni Lemeks hustrur,

lyssna till mina ord:

Jag dödar en man för ett sår

och en ung man för ett blåmärke.

24 Om Kain blir hämnad sju gånger,

blir Lemek det sjuttiosju gånger."

25 Adam låg återigen med sin hustru, och hon födde en son som hon gav namnet Set. Hon sade: "Gud har gett*4:25Set … gettNamnet Set betyder "ge/sätta/ersätta". mig en annan avkomling i stället för Abel, eftersom Kain dödade honom."

26 Också Set fick en son och han gav honom namnet Enosh. Vid den tiden började man åkalla Herrens namn.
