1 Israels barn gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, och han gav dem i midjaniternas hand i sju år. 2 Midjaniternas hand pressade Israel så starkt att Israels barn på grund av midjaniterna gjorde sig hålor uppe i bergen, och grottor och bergfästen. 3 *5 Mos 28:33. Närhelst israeliterna hade sått, drog midjaniterna, amalekiterna och österlänningarna upp mot dem. 4 De belägrade dem, överföll dem och fördärvade landets gröda ända till Gaza. De lämnade inget kvar att leva av i Israel, varken får, oxar eller åsnor, 5 för de drog dit upp med sin boskap och sina tält, talrika som gräshoppor. Oräkneliga var de med sina kameler, och de kom in i landet för att fördärva det. 6 Så blev Israel utarmat genom midjaniterna, och Israels barn ropade till Herren.

7 När Israels barn ropade till Herren för midjaniternas skull, 8 sände Herren en profet till Israels barn som sade till dem: "Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Jag har fört er upp ur Egypten och hämtat er ut ur träldomshuset. 9 Jag har räddat er från egyptiernas hand och från alla era förtryckares hand. Jag drev bort dem framför er och gav er deras land. 10 *2 Kung 17:35, 38f. Och jag sade till er: Jag är Herren er Gud. Ni ska inte frukta de gudar som dyrkas av amoreerna i vilkas land ni bor. Men ni lyssnade inte till min röst."

11 Herrens ängel kom och satte sig under terebinten vid Ofra som tillhörde abiesriten Joash. Dennes son Gideon*6:11GideonBetyder "huggare" (jfr vers 28). Domare på 1100-talet f Kr. Nämns i Hebr 11:32 som en av trons hjältar. höll på att klappa ut vete i vinpressen för att gömma det för midjaniterna. 12 För honom uppenbarade sig Herrens ängel och sade till honom: "Herren är med dig, du tappre stridsman!"

13 *2 Mos 13:14. Gideon svarade honom: "O, min herre, om Herren är med oss, varför har då allt detta drabbat oss? Och var är alla hans under som våra fäder har berättat om och sagt: ’Se, har inte Herren fört oss upp ur Egypten?’ Nu har Herren övergett oss och gett oss i midjaniternas hand." 14 *Hebr 11:32f. Då vände Herren sig till honom och sade: "Gå i denna din kraft och fräls Israel ur midjaniternas våld. Se, jag har sänt dig." 15 Han svarade honom: "O Herre, hur ska jag kunna rädda Israel? Min ätt är den mest obetydliga i Manasse och jag är den yngste*6:15mest obetydliga ... yngsteHinder för att lyckas samla folket under sitt ledarskap. i min fars hus." 16 *2 Mos 3:12.Herren sade till honom: "Jag är med dig, och du ska slå midjaniterna som en enda man." 17 Gideon svarade honom: "Om jag har funnit nåd för dina ögon, så ge mig ett tecken att det är du som talar med mig. 18 Gå inte härifrån förrän jag kommer tillbaka till dig och bär fram min offergåva och lägger den framför dig." Han sade: "Jag stannar tills du kommer tillbaka."

19 Och Gideon gick in och tillagade en killing, likaså osyrat bröd av en efa mjöl*6:19en efa mjölCa 22 liter.. Därefter lade han köttet i en korg och hällde spadet i en kruka. Sedan bar han ut det till honom under terebinten och satte fram det. 20 Då sade Guds ängel till honom: "Ta köttet och det osyrade brödet och lägg det på berghällen där och häll spadet över det." Han gjorde så. 21 *3 Mos 9:24, 1 Kung 18:38f, 2 Krön 7:1.Herrens ängel räckte ut staven som han hade i handen och rörde med spetsen vid köttet och det osyrade brödet. Då slog det upp eld ur klippan och förtärde köttet och det osyrade brödet. Och Herrens ängel försvann ur hans åsyn.

22 *2 Mos 33:20f, Dom 13:22f. När Gideon såg att det var Herrens ängel, sade Gideon: "Ve mig, Herre Gud, jag har sett Herrens ängel ansikte mot ansikte!" 23 Men Herren sade till honom: "Frid vare med dig! Var inte rädd, du ska inte dö." 24 Då byggde Gideon ett altare där åt Herren och kallade det Herren är frid. Det finns kvar än i dag i det abiesritiska Ofra.

25 *5 Mos 7:5. Den natten sade Herren till honom: "Ta din fars tjur och den andra sjuåriga tjuren*6:25din fars tjur och den andra sjuåriga tjurenAnnan översättning: "din fars andra tjur, den sjuåriga tjuren" (alltså endast en tjur).. Riv ner din fars baalsaltare och hugg sönder Asherapålen som står intill det. 26 Bygg ett altare åt Herren din Gud överst på denna klippa på rätt sätt. Ta sedan den andra tjuren och offra den som brännoffer på resterna av Asherapålen som du hugger sönder." 27 Då tog Gideon med sig tio av sina tjänare och gjorde som Herren hade sagt till honom. Men eftersom han var rädd för sin fars hus och för stadens män gjorde han det inte på dagen utan på natten.

28 När stadens män steg upp tidigt nästa morgon, se, då låg Baals altare nedrivet, Asherapålen intill var sönderhuggen och den andra tjuren var offrad som brännoffer på det nya altaret.

29 Då sade de till varandra: "Vem har gjort detta?" När de undersökte saken och hörde sig för, fick de veta att Gideon, Joashs son, hade gjort det. 30 Då sade männen i staden till Joash: "För ut din son. Han måste dö, för han har rivit ner Baals altare och huggit sönder Asherapålen som stod intill det."

31 *1 Kung 18:21. Men Joash svarade alla som stod omkring honom: "Ska ni driva Baals sak? Ska ni rädda honom? Den som driver hans sak ska dödas före nästa morgon. Om Baal är Gud så kan han försvara sig själv när någon river hans altare." 32 *Dom 7:1. Därför kallade man Gideon från den dagen Jerubbaal, för man sade: "Baal får driva sin sak*6:32Baal får driva sin sakHebr. jaréb Báal. mot honom när han rivit Baals altare."

33 Midjaniterna, amalekiterna och österlänningarna hade alla samlats och gått över Jordan och slagit läger i Jisreels dal. 34 *Dom 3:10, 27, 1 Krön 12:18, 2 Krön 24:20, Luk 24:49. Men Herrens Ande kom över Gideon. Han blåste i hornet, och abiesriterna samlades och följde honom. 35 Han sände ut budbärare i hela Manasse, så att också de samlades och följde honom. Han sände även budbärare till Asher, Sebulon och Naftali, och de kom upp för att möta dem.

36 Och Gideon sade till Gud: "Om du verkligen vill rädda Israel genom min hand, som du har lovat, 37 se då här. Jag lägger ut den här nyklippta ullen på tröskplatsen. Om det kommer dagg bara på ullen medan marken förblir torr, då vet jag att du tänker rädda Israel genom min hand, som du har lovat." 38 Och det blev så. När han tidigt nästa morgon kramade ur ullen, kunde han pressa ut så mycket dagg ur den att det fyllde en skål med vatten.

39 *1 Mos 18:30f. Men Gideon sade till Gud: "Låt inte din vrede brinna mot mig om jag talar än en gång. Låt mig få försöka bara en gång till med ullen. Gör nu så att bara ullen förblir torr, medan det kommer dagg överallt på marken." 40 Gud gjorde så den natten. Bara ullen var torr, medan det hade kommit dagg överallt på marken.

7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, 8 That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;*6.8 a prophet: Heb. a man a prophet 9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10 And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.*6.11 Gideon: Gr. Gedeon*6.11 to hide…: Heb. to cause it to flee 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. 13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites. 14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee? 15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.*6.15 my family…: Heb. my thousand is the meanest 16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. 17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me. 18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. 19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.*6.19 a kid: Heb. a kid of the goats 20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight. 22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face. 23 And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.*6.24 Jehovah-shalom: that is, The LORD send peace

25 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:*6.25 even: or, and 26 And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.*6.26 rock: Heb. strong place*6.26 in the ordered…: or, in an orderly manner 27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built. 29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it. 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar. 32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.*6.32 Jerubbaal: that is, Let Baal plead*6.32 Jerubbesheth: that is, Let the shameful thing plead

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. 34 But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.*6.34 came…: Heb. clothed*6.34 gathered: Heb. called 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.*6.35 gathered: Heb. called

36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said, 37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
