O edito do rei. O seu sonho duma árvore grande

1 O rei Nabucodonosor *Dn 6.25a todos os povos, nações e línguas, que habitam em toda a terra, *Dn 6.25;Ed 4.17paz vos seja multiplicada. 2 Pareceu-me bem divulgar os milagres e maravilhas que *Dn 4.17,24-25,32,34;Dn 3.26o Altíssimo Deus tem feito para comigo. 3 Quão grandes são *Dn 6.27;Sl 77.19;105.27;Is 25.1os seus milagres! E quão poderosas são as suas maravilhas! E o seu *Dn 4.34;Dn 2.44;6.26reino é um reino sempiterno, e o seu domínio se estende de geração em geração.

4 Eu, Nabucodonosor, estava sossegado em minha casa *Sl 30.6;Is 47.7-8e florescente no meu palácio. 5 Tive um *Dn 2.3sonho que me atemorizou; e, estando eu na minha cama, *Dn 2.29os pensamentos *Dn 4.10,13;Dn 2.28e as visões da minha cabeça me perturbaram. 6 Portanto, expedi um decreto que *Dn 2.2;Gn 41.8se apresentassem perante mim todos os sábios de Babilônia, para que me fizessem saber a interpretação do sonho. 7 Então, entraram *Dn 2.10,27;5.7os mágicos, os encantadores, os caldeus e os feiticeiros; eu contei o sonho diante deles, porém não me fizeram saber a *Dn 2.7;Is 44.25;Jr 27.9-10interpretação dele. 8 Mas, por fim, entrou na minha presença Daniel, que tem por nome *Dn 1.7;2.26;5.12Beltessazar, segundo o nome do *Dn 3.14meu deus, e no qual há *Dn 4.9,18;Dn 5.11,14o espírito dos deuses santos; e, diante dele, contei o sonho, dizendo: 9 Ó Beltessazar, *Dn 1.20;2.48;5.11chefe dos mágicos, porquanto eu sei que há em ti o *Dn 4.8;Gn 41.38espírito dos deuses santos, *Dn 2.47;Ez 28.3e nenhum segredo te é difícil, *Dn 2.4-5;Gn 41.15dize-me as visões do meu sonho que tive e a sua interpretação. 10 Desta maneira eram *Dn 4.5as visões da minha cabeça, estando eu na minha cama: eu vi, e eis *Dn 4.20;Ez 31.3-6uma árvore no meio da terra, e era grande a sua altura. 11 Crescia e tornava-se forte, e a sua altura *Dn 4.21-22;Dt 9.1chegava até o céu, e era vista até a extremidade de toda a terra. 12 As suas folhas eram *Ez 31.7formosas, e o seu fruto, copioso, e nela havia sustento para todos; debaixo dela, *Jr 27.6;Ez 31.6os animais do campo achavam *Lm 4.20sombra, *Mt 13.32;Lc 13.19e as aves do céu pousavam nos seus ramos, e dela se sustentava toda a carne. 13 Vi, *Dn 4.5,10;Dn 7.1nas visões da minha cabeça, estando eu na minha cama, e eis que *Dn 4.17,23um vigia, a saber, *Dn 8.13;Dt 33.2;Sl 89.7um santo, descia do céu. 14 Ele clamou *Dn 3.4em alta voz e disse assim: *Dn 4.23;Ez 31.10-14;Mt 3.10;7.19;Lc 13.7-9Deitai abaixo a árvore, e cortai-lhe os ramos, e fazei-lhe cair as folhas, e espalhai o seu fruto; afugentem-se de debaixo dela *Dn 4.12;Ez 31.12-13os animais, e, dos seus ramos, as aves. 15 Contudo, *Jó 14.7-9deixai na terra o tronco com as suas raízes, ligado com laço de ferro e de bronze, no meio da tenra relva do campo; e seja molhado do orvalho do céu, e seja a sua porção com *Dn 4.32os animais na erva da terra; 16 *Dn 4.32-33mude-se-lhe o coração para que não seja mais o de homem, e seja-lhe dado o coração de animal; *1Cr 29.30e passem sobre ele *Dn 4.23,25,32;Dn 7.25;11.13sete tempos. 17 Pelo decreto *Dn 4.13,23dos vigias é a sentença, e pela palavra dos santos o mando, a fim de que *Sl 9.16;83.18conheçam os viventes que *Dn 4.2,25o Altíssimo domina no reino dos homens, *Dn 4.25;Dn 5.18-19;Jr 27.5-7e o dá a quem quiser, e constitui sobre ele *Dn 11.21;1Sm 2.8o mais humilde dos homens. 18 Esse sonho eu, rei Nabucodonosor, o tenho visto. Tu, pois, ó Beltessazar, dize a interpretação, porquanto todos os *Dn 4.7;Dn 5.8,15;Gn 41.8sábios do meu reino não me podem fazer saber a interpretação; porém tu podes, porque há em ti o *Dn 4.8-9espírito dos deuses santos.

Daniel interpreta o sonho

19 Então, Daniel, que tinha por nome Beltessazar, ficou espantado por algum tempo, e os seus *Dn 7.15,28;8.27;10.16-17;Jr 4.19pensamentos o perturbaram. Respondeu o rei e disse: Beltessazar, *Dn 4.4-5;1Sm 3.17não te perturbe o sonho, nem a sua interpretação. Respondeu Beltessazar e disse: *Dn 4.24;Dn 10.16;2Sm 18.31;1Rs 18.7Meu senhor, seja o sonho para os que te odeiam, e a sua interpretação, para os *2Sm 18.32;Jr 29.7teus adversários. 20 *Dn 4.10-12A árvore que viste, a qual crescia e se tornava forte, cuja altura chegava até o céu e que era vista por toda a terra, 21 cujas folhas eram formosas, cujo fruto copioso, e em que havia sustento para todos, debaixo da qual habitavam os animais do campo, e em cujos ramos pousavam as aves do céu, 22 essa árvore *Dn 2.37-38;2Sm 12.7és tu, ó rei, que tens crescido e te hás tornado forte; pois *Dn 5.18-19a tua grandeza tem crescido e já chega até o céu, e o teu *Jr 27.6-7domínio, até a extremidade da terra. 23 Porquanto o rei viu baixar do céu *Dn 4.13,17um vigia, a saber, um santo que disse: *Dn 4.14-15Deitai abaixo a árvore, e a destrói; contudo, deixai na terra o tronco com as suas raízes, ligado com um laço de ferro e de bronze no meio da tenra relva do campo; e seja ele molhado do orvalho do céu, e seja a sua porção com os animais do campo, até que passem sobre ele *Dn 4.16sete tempos; 24 esta é a interpretação, ó rei, e é o *Dn 4.17decreto *Dn 4.2do Altíssimo, que é *Jó 40.11-12;Sl 107.40vindo sobre o rei, meu senhor: 25 tu serás *Dn 4.33;Dn 5.21expulso dentre os homens, e a tua morada será com os animais do campo, e serás obrigado *Dn 4.33a comer feno como boi e serás molhado do orvalho do céu, e sobre ti passarão *Dn 4.16sete tempos, até que conheças que *Dn 4.2,17;Sl 83.18;Jr 27.5o Altíssimo domina no reino dos homens *Dn 4.17;Dn 2.37;5.21e o dá a quem quiser. 26 Porquanto mandaram *Dn 4.15,23deixar o tronco com as raízes da árvore; o teu reino te ficará firme, depois que tiveres conhecido que *Dn 4.31;Dn 2.18-19,28,37,44os céus dominam. 27 Por isso, ó rei, seja do teu agrado *Gn 41.33-37o meu conselho, *Pv 28.13;Is 55.6-7;Ez 18.21-22e desfaze os teus pecados pela justiça e as tuas iniquidades, *Sl 41.1-3;Is 58.6-7,10por manifestares misericórdia para com os pobres; se, porventura, houver *1Rs 21.29;Jn 3.9uma prolongação da tua tranquilidade.

Cumpre-se o sonho do rei

28 Tudo isso *Nm 23.19;Zc 1.6veio sobre o rei Nabucodonosor. 29 Ao cabo de *2Pe 3.9doze meses, estava ele passeando no palácio real de Babilônia. 30 Falou o rei e disse: Não é esta a *Hc 2.4grande Babilônia, que *Dn 4.25;Dn 5.20-21;2Cr 2.5-6;Is 10.8-11;37.24-25eu edifiquei para a morada real, pela força do meu poder e para a glória da minha majestade? 31 Ainda estava *Dn 5.5a palavra na boca do rei, quando veio *Dn 4.13-14,23do céu uma voz, dizendo: Ó rei Nabucodonosor, a ti se diz: O reino já passou de ti. 32 Serás *Dn 4.15,25expulso dentre os homens, e a tua morada será com os animais do campo; serás obrigado a comer feno como boi, e sobre ti passarão *Dn 4.16,25sete tempos, até que conheças que *Dn 4.2,17,25o Altíssimo domina no reino dos homens e o dá a quem quiser. 33 Na mesma hora, cumpriu-se a palavra sobre Nabucodonosor; foi ele *Dn 4.25;Dn 5.21expulso dentre os homens e comeu feno como boi, e foi o seu corpo molhado do orvalho do céu, até que cresceu o seu pelo como as penas das águias, e as suas unhas, como as das aves.

34 *Dn 4.16,25,32Ao cabo dos dias, eu, Nabucodonosor, levantei ao céu os meus olhos, e tornou a mim *Dn 4.36o meu entendimento. Eu bendisse *Dn 4.2;Dn 5.18,21ao Altíssimo, e louvei, e glorifiquei ao *Dn 6.26;12.7;Sl 102.24que vive para sempre, porque o seu domínio é um *Dn 4.3;Sl 145.13;Jr 10.10domínio sempiterno, e o seu reino se estende de geração em geração. 35 *Is 40.17Todos os habitantes da terra são tidos como nada; *Dn 6.27;Sl 135.6ele faz conforme a sua vontade no exército do céu e entre os habitantes da terra, *Jó 42.2;Is 43.13e não há quem possa resistir a sua mão, nem lhe dizer: *Is 45.9Que fazes? 36 Ao mesmo tempo, tornou a mim *Dn 4.34;2Cr 33.12-13o meu entendimento; e, para a glória do meu reino, tornou a mim a minha *Dn 4.30majestade *Dn 2.31e resplendor; buscaram-me os meus conselheiros e os meus grandes; *Dn 4.26fui restabelecido no meu reino, e foi-me acrescentado excelente *Dn 4.22;Pv 22.4grandeza. 37 Agora, eu, Nabucodonosor, *Dn 4.3,34louvo, e engrandeço, e glorifico ao Rei do *Dn 4.26;Dn 5.23céu, porque *Dt 32.4;Sl 33.4-5;Is 5.16todas as suas obras são verdade, e os seus caminhos, juízos, e ele pode humilhar os *Dn 5.20;Êx 18.11;Jó 40.11-12que andam na soberba.

1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 2 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.*4.2 I thought…: Chaldee, It was seemly before me 3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

4 I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace: 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, 9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.*4.10 I saw: Chaldee, I was seeing 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: 12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it. 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; 14 He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:*4.14 aloud: Chaldee, with might 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16 Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: 22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him; 24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: 25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.*4.27 a lengthening…: or, an healing of thine error

28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.*4.29 in: or, upon 30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
