Elifaz acusa Jó de presunção

1 Então, respondeu Elifaz, temanita:

2 Responderá o sábio com ciência vã,

*Jó 6.26, ref.e encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre?

3 Argumentando com palavras que de nada servem

ou com razões com que ele nada aproveita?

4 Na verdade, tu destróis a reverência

e prejudicas o espírito religioso para com Deus.

5 Pois *Jó 22.5a tua iniquidade ensina a tua boca,

e escolhes a língua dos *Jó 5.12-13astutos.

6 A tua *Jó 18.7própria boca te condena, e não eu;

e os teus lábios dão testemunho contra ti.

7 És tu o primeiro homem que nasceu?

Ou *Jó 38.4,21foste dado à luz antes dos outeiros?

8 Assistes no *Jó 29.4;Rm 11.34concílio de Deus?

Aproprias para ti a sabedoria?

9 *Jó 12.3;13.2Que sabes tu, que nós não sabemos?

E que entendes, que não se acha em nós?

10 Conosco estão os homens *Jó 12.12;32.6-7encanecidos e idosos,

mais velhos do que teu pai.

11 Porventura, *Jó 5.17-19;36.15-16fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus

e da *Jó 6.10;23.12palavra que te trata benignamente?

12 Por que te arrebata *Jó 11.13;36.13o teu coração?

Por que flamejam os teus olhos?

13 De modo que voltas o teu espírito contra Deus

e permites sair as palavras da tua boca.

14 Que é o homem, *Jó 14.4para ser puro?

E *Jó 25.4o que é nascido da mulher, para ser justo?

15 Eis que Deus não confia nos *Jó 5.1seus santos,

e, à sua vista, *Jó 25.5os céus não são limpos;

16 quanto menos o homem *Sl 14.1abominável e corrompido,

que *Jó 34.7bebe a iniquidade como a água?

Elifaz mostra que o ímpio é atormentado nesta vida

17 Eu to mostrarei; ouve-me;

e te contarei o que tenho visto,

18 (o que homens sábios têm anunciado

*Jó 8.8;20.4da parte de seus pais, não o ocultando;

19 a eles somente pertencia o país,

não havendo estrangeiro algum passado por meio deles):

20 O iníquo passa em *Jó 15.24angústia todos os dias,

o número dos anos que são *Jó 24.1;27.13reservados para o opressor.

21 A voz de *Jó 15.24;18.11;20.25;24.17;27.20terrores retine nos seus ouvidos;

*Jó 20.21;1Ts 5.3na prosperidade, lhe sobrevirá o assolador.

22 Não espera *Jó 15.30escapar das trevas,

e a *Jó 19.29;27.14;33.18;36.12espada o está esperando.

23 Ele anda em busca de pão, dizendo: Onde está?

Sabe que o dia das *Jó 15.22,30trevas lhe está iminente.

24 O aperto e a angústia o amedrontam;

prevalecem contra ele, como um rei preparado para a batalha,

25 porque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus

e com soberba *Jó 36.9se porta contra o Todo-Poderoso.

26 Corre contra ele com cerviz dura,

opõe-lhe as saliências do seu escudo,

27 porque *Sl 17.10;73.7;119.70cobriu o rosto com a gordura,

e criou carnes grossas sobre as ilhargas.

em casas que ninguém habitaria

e que estavam prestes a cair em ruínas.

29 *Jó 27.16-17Não se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda,

nem as suas colheitas serão abundantes.

33 Sacudirá as suas uvas verdes como a vide

*Jó 14.2e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira;

34 pois a companhia dos *Jó 8.13, ref.ímpios será estéril,

e o fogo consumirá as *Jó 8.22, ref.tendas de suborno.

35 Eles *Sl 7.14;Is 59.4concebem a malícia, dão à luz a iniquidade,

e o seu ventre prepara enganos.

1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, 2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?*15.2 vain…: Heb. knowledge of wind 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? 4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.*15.4 castest…: Heb. makest void*15.4 prayer: or, speech 5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.*15.5 uttereth: Heb. teacheth 6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. 7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills? 8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? 9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us? 10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father. 11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? 12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at, 13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth? 14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? 15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. 16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; 18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it: 19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. 20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. 21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.*15.21 A dreadful…: Heb. A sound of fears 22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. 23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. 24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. 25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. 26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: 27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks. 28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps. 29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth. 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. 31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. 32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.*15.32 accomplished: or, cut off 33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. 34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.*15.35 vanity: or, iniquity
