1 Disse Jeová a Moisés:2 Fala aos filhos de Israel, e recebe deles varas, uma pela casa de cada pai de todos os seus príncipes segundo as casas de seus pais, isto é, doze varas; escreve o nome de cada um sobre a sua vara.3 Escreverás o nome de Arão sobre a vara de Levi, porque cada cabeça das casas de seus pais terá uma vara.4 Depositá-las-ás na tenda da revelação diante do testemunho, onde venho a vós.5 Brotará a vara do homem que eu escolher; assim farei cessar de mim as murmurações dos filhos de Israel, que murmuram contra vós.6 Falou Moisés aos filhos de Israel, e todos os seus príncipes deram-lhe varas, cada príncipe lhe deu uma, segundo as casas de seus pais, isto é, doze varas; e a vara de Arão achava-se entre as varas deles.7 Moisés depositou as varas diante de Jeová na tenda do testemunho.8 No dia seguinte entrou Moisés na tenda do testemunho; eis que a vara de Arão pela casa de Levi tinha brotado e, inchando os gomos, arrebentou em flores e deu amêndoas maduras.9 Então Moisés trouxe todas as varas de diante de Jeová a todos os filhos de Israel: eles viram, e receberam, cada um a sua vara.10 Disse Jeová a Moisés: Torna a pôr a vara de Arão diante do testemunho, para se guardar, como memorial, contra os filhos de rebelião; para que faças acabar as suas murmurações contra mim, a fim de que não morram.11 Assim fez Moisés; como Jeová lhe ordenou, assim fez.12 Os filhos de Israel disseram a Moisés: Eis que expiramos, perecemos, todos nós perecemos.13 Todo o que se chegar ao tabernáculo de Jeová, morrerá; porventura expiraremos todos?

1 Jehovah said to Moses:2 »Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them. Get one from the leader of each of their tribes. Write each man’s name on his staff.3 »Write Aaron’s name on the staff for Levi because there must be one staff for the head of each tribe.4 »Put them in the tent of meeting where I meet with you, in front of the testimony of my promise.5 »The staff from the man I choose will begin to grow. In this way I will silence the frequent complaints the Israelites make against you and Aaron.«6 Thus Moses spoke to the Israelites. Their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one from the leader of each of their tribes. Aaron’s staff was among them.7 Moses put the staffs in Jehovah’s presence in the tent of the testimony.8 The next day Moses went into the tent. He found that Aaron’s staff for the tribe of Levi had not only begun to grow, but it had also blossomed and produced ripe almonds.9 Moses brought out the staffs from Jehovah’s presence and showed them to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his staff.10 Jehovah said to Moses: »Put Aaron’s staff in front of the testimony. Keep it there as a sign to warn any other rebels. Then you will stop their complaints about me, and they will not die.«11 Moses did exactly what Jehovah commanded him to do.12 The Israelites said to Moses: Now we are going to die! We will perish! We are all lost!13 Anyone who comes near Jehovah’s tent will die! Are we all going to die?
