1 Toda a assembléia dos israelitas partiu de Elim e foi para o deserto de Sin, situado entre Elim e o Sinai. Era o décimo quinto dia do segundo mês após sua saída do Egito.2 Toda a assembléia dos israelitas pôs-se a murmurar contra Moisés e Aarão no deserto.3 Disseram-lhes: "Oxalá tivéssemos sido mortos pela mão do Senhor no Egito, quando nos assentávamos diante das panelas de carne e tínhamos pão em abundância! Vós nos conduzistes a este deserto, para matardes de fome toda esta multidão."4 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "Vou fazer chover pão do alto do céu. Sairá o povo e colherá diariamente a porção de cada dia. Pô-lo-ei desse modo à prova, para ver se andará ou não segundo minhas ordens.5 No sexto dia, quando prepararem o que tiverem ajuntado haverá o dobro do que recolhem cada dia."6 Moisés e Aarão disseram a todos os israelitas: "Esta tarde, sabereis que foi o Senhor quem vos tirou do Egito,7 e amanhã pela manhã vereis a sua glória, porque ele ouviu as vossas murmurações contra ele. Nós, porém, quem somos nós para que murmureis contra nós?"8 Moisés disse: "Isso acontecerá quando o Senhor vos der, esta tarde, carne para comerdes e, amanhã pela manhã, pão em abundância, porque ele ouviu as murmurações que proferistes contra ele. Nós, porém, quem somos? Não é contra nós que murmurastes, mas contra o Senhor."9 Moisés disse a Aarão: "Dize a toda a assembléia dos israelitas: apresentai-vos diante do Senhor, porque ele ouviu vossas murmurações".10 Enquanto Aarão falava a toda a assembléia dos israelitas, olharam para o deserto e eis que apareceu na nuvem a glória do Senhor!11 E o Senhor disse a Moisés:12 "Ouvi as murmurações dos israelitas. Dize-lhes: esta tarde, antes que escureça, comereis carne e, amanhã de manhã, vos fartareis de pão; e sabereis que sou o Senhor, vosso Deus".13 À tarde, com efeito, subiram codornizes {do horizonte} e cobriram o acampamento; e, no dia seguinte pela manhã, havia uma camada de orvalho em torno de todo o acampamento.14 E, tendo evaporado esse orvalho, eis que sobre a superfície do deserto estava uma coisa miúda, granulosa, miúda como a geada sobre a terra!15 Vendo isso, disseram os filhos de Israel uns aos outros: "Que é isso?", pois não sabiam o que era. Moisés disse-lhes: "Este é o pão que o Senhor vos manda para comer.16 Eis o que vos ordena o Senhor: ajunte cada um o quanto lhe for necessário para comer; para aqueles que estão em sua tenda, um gomor por cabeça, segundo o número das pessoas."17 Assim fizeram os israelitas: ajuntaram uns mais, outros menos.18 Mas, quando se media com o gomor, aconteceu que o que tinha ajuntado muito não tinha demais e, ao que tinha ajuntado pouco, não lhe faltava: cada um havia recolhido segundo a sua necessidade.19 Moisés disse-lhes: "Ninguém reserve dele para o dia seguinte."20 Alguns não o ouviram e guardaram dele até pela manhã; mas criou vermes e cheirou mal. Moisés irritou-se contra eles.21 Todas as manhãs fizeram a sua provisão, cada um segundo suas necessidades. E, quando vinha o calor do sol, derretia-se.22 No sexto dia, recolheram uma dupla quantidade de alimento, dois gomores para cada um. Vieram todos os chefes da assembléia e contaram-no a Moisés.23 Este lhes disse: "É isso o que o Senhor ordenou. Amanhã é um dia de repouso, o sábado consagrado ao Senhor. Por isso, o que tendes a cozer no forno, cozei-o, e o que tendes a cozer em água, cozei-o; e o que sobrar, ponde-o de lado até pela manhã."24 Guardaram-no até o dia seguinte, segundo a ordem de Moisés; e não cheirou mal, nem se acharam vermes nele.25 "Comei-o hoje, disse Moisés, porque é o dia do sábado do Senhor; hoje não o achareis no campo.26 Durante seis dias o ajuntareis; mas o sétimo é o sábado: nele não haverá.27 {No sétimo dia alguns saíram para fazer sua provisão, mas nada encontraram.28 Então o Senhor disse a Moisés: 'Até quando vos recusareis a observar meus mandamentos e minhas leis?'}29 Considerai que, se o Senhor vos deu o sábado, vos dá ele no sexto dia alimento para dois dias. Fique cada um onde está, e ninguém saia de sua habitação no sétimo dia".30 Assim o povo repousou no sétimo dia.31 Os israelitas deram a esse alimento o nome de maná. Assemelhava-se à semente de coentro: era branco e tinha o sabor de uma torta de mel.32 Moisés disse: "Eis o que ordena o Senhor: que se encha dele um gomor para ser conservado para vossas gerações futuras, a fim de que vejam o pão com que vos sustentei no deserto, depois de vos ter tirado do Egito".33 E Moisés disse a Aarão: "Toma uma vasilha e põe nela a quantia de um gomor de maná, e deposita-o diante do Senhor, a fim de conservá-lo para vossos descendentes".34 Aarão, segundo a ordem do Senhor a Moisés, depositou-o diante do Testemunho para ser conservado.35 Os israelitas comeram o maná durante quarenta anos, até a sua chegada a uma terra habitada. Comeram o maná até que chegaram aos confins da terra de Canaã.36 {O gomor é a décima parte do efá.}

1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which [is] between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.2 And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness;3 and the sons of Israel said unto them, It would have been better if we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots [and] when we ate bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.4 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather the word for every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or not.5 And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare [that] which they bring in, which shall be twice as much as they gather daily.6 Then Moses and Aaron said unto all the sons of Israel, At evening ye shall know that the LORD has brought you out from the land of Egypt;7 And in the morning ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for he has heard your murmurings against the LORD; and what [are] we, that ye murmur against us?8 And Moses said, [This shall be] when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread to the full; for the LORD has heard your murmurings which ye have murmured against him; and what [are] we? Your murmurings [are] not against us, but against the LORD.9 And Moses spoke unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the sons of Israel, Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your murmurings.10 And it came to pass as Aaron spoke unto the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,12 I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israel; speak unto them, saying, Between the two evenings ye shall eat flesh, and tomorrow ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD your God.13 And it came to pass, that in the evening quail came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew descended round about the host.14 And when the dew ceased to descend, behold, upon the face of the wilderness [there lay] a small round thing [as] small as the hoar frost on the ground.15 And when the sons of Israel saw [it], they said one to another, It [is] manna ([What is it?]): for they did not know what it [was]. Then Moses said unto them, This [is] the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.16 This [is] the thing which the LORD has commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for each one, [according to] the number of your persons; take ye each one for [those] who [are] in his tent.17 And the sons of Israel did so and gathered, some more, some less.18 And when they did measure [it] with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered each one according to his eating.19 And Moses said, Let no one leave of it until the morning.20 Notwithstanding they did not hearken unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.21 And they gathered it early in the morning, each one according to his eating; and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.22 And it came to pass [that] on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses.23 And he said unto them, This [is] what the LORD has said, Tomorrow [is] the holy sabbath of rest unto the LORD; bake [that] which ye will bake [today] and cook what ye will cook; and that which remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.24 And they laid it up until the morning as Moses bade; and it did not stink, neither was there any worm in it.25 And Moses said, Eat that today; for today [is] a sabbath unto the LORD; today ye shall not find it in the field.26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, [which is] the sabbath, in it there shall be none.27 And it came to pass that [some] of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, and they found none.28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?29 See that the LORD has given you the sabbath; therefore, he gives you the bread of two days on the sixth day; abide ye every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.30 So the people rested on the seventh day.31 And the house of Israel called its name Manna; and it [was] like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it [was] like wafers [made] with honey.32 And Moses said, This [is] what the LORD has commanded, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your descendants, that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.33 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot and put an omer full of manna in it and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your descendants.34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.35 Thus the sons of Israel ate manna forty years until they came to a land inhabited; they ate manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.36 Now an omer [is] the tenth [part] of an ephah.:
