1 Moisés apascentava o rebanho de Jetro, seu sogro, sacerdote de Madiã. Um dia em que conduzira o rebanho para além do deserto, chegou até a montanha de Deus, Horeb.2 O anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe numa chama {que saía} do meio a uma sarça. Moisés olhava: a sarça ardia, mas não se consumia.3 "Vou me aproximar, disse ele consigo, para contemplar esse extraordinário espetáculo, e saber porque a sarça não se consome."4 Vendo o Senhor que ele se aproximou para ver, chamou-o do meio da sarça: "Moisés, Moisés!" "Eis-me aqui!" respondeu ele.5 E Deus: "Não te aproximes daqui. Tira as sandálias dos teus pés, porque o lugar em que te encontras é uma terra santa.6 Eu sou, ajuntou ele, o Deus de teu pai, o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac e o Deus de Jacó". Moisés escondeu o rosto, e não ousava olhar para Deus.7 O Senhor disse: "Eu vi, eu vi a aflição de meu povo que está no Egito, e ouvi os seus clamores por causa de seus opressores. Sim, eu conheço seus sofrimentos.8 E desci para livrá-lo da mão dos egípcios e para fazê-lo subir do Egito para uma terra fértil e espaçosa, uma terra que mana leite e mel, lá onde habitam os cananeus, os hiteus, os amorreus, os ferezeus, os heveus e os jebuseus.9 Agora, eis que os clamores dos israelitas chegaram até mim, e vi a opressão que lhes fazem os egípcios.10 Vai, eu te envio ao faraó para tirar do Egito os israelitas, meu povo".11 Moisés disse a Deus: "Quem sou eu para ir ter com o faraó e tirar do Egito os israelitas?"12 "Eu estarei contigo, respondeu Deus; e eis aqui um sinal de que sou eu que te envio: quando tiveres tirado o povo do Egito, servireis a Deus sobre esta montanha".13 Moisés disse a Deus: "Quando eu for para junto dos israelitas e lhes disser que o Deus de seus pais me enviou a eles, que lhes responderei se me perguntarem qual é o seu nome?"14 Deus respondeu a Moisés: "EU SOU AQUELE QUE SOU". E ajuntou: "Eis como responderás aos israelitas: {Aquele que se chama} EU SOU envia-me junto de vós."15 Deus disse ainda a Moisés: "Assim falarás aos israelitas: É JAVÉ, o Deus de vossos pais, o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac e o Deus de Jacó, quem me envia junto de vós. Este é o meu nome para sempre, e é assim que me chamarão de geração em geração".16 "Vai, reúne os anciãos de Israel e dize-lhes: o Senhor, o Deus de vossos pais, o Deus de Abraão, de Isaac e de Jacó apareceu-me. E disse-me: eu vos visitei, e vi o que se vos faz no Egito,17 e disse: tirar-vos-ei do Egito onde sois oprimidos, para fazer-vos subir para a terra dos cananeus, dos hiteus, dos amorreus, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus, terra que mana leite e mel.18 Eles ouvirão a tua voz. Irás então com os anciãos de Israel à presença do rei do Egito e lhe direis: o Senhor, o Deus dos hebreus, nos apareceu. Deixa-nos, pois, ir para o deserto, a três dias de caminho, para oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor, nosso Deus.19 Eu sei que o rei do Egito não vos deixará partir, se ele não for obrigado pela força.20 Mas estenderei a mão e ferirei o Egito com toda sorte de prodígios que farei no meio deles. Depois disso, o faraó vos deixará partir.21 Farei com que esse povo ganhe as boas graças dos egípcios, e, quando partirdes, não ireis com as mãos vazias:22 cada mulher pedirá à sua vizinha e àquela que mora em sua casa objetos de prata e de ouro, e vestidos que poreis sobre vossos filhos e sobre vossas filhas. Assim despojareis os egípcios."

1 Now as Moses shepherded the sheep of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, he led the flock to the backside of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.2 And the Angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush [was] not consumed.3 Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great vision, why the bush is not burnt.4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here [am] I.5 And he said, Do not come near; take off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place upon which thou dost stand [is] holy ground.6 Moreover he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses covered his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who [are] in Egypt and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;8 and I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land unto a good and broad land, unto a land flowing with milk and honey, unto the places of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.9 Therefore, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has now come before me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh that thou may bring forth my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.11 Then Moses said unto God, Who [am] I that I should go unto Pharaoh and that I should bring forth the sons of Israel out of Egypt?12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this [shall be] a token unto thee that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the sons of Israel and say unto them, The God of your fathers has sent me unto you, and if they say to me, What [is] his name? What shall I say unto them?14 And God answered unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM. And he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: I AM ([YHWH]) has sent me unto you.15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of Israel: The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me unto you. This [is] my name for ever, and this [is] my memorial unto all ages.16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you and [seen] that which is done to you in Egypt,17 and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite unto a land flowing with milk and honey.18 And they shall hearken to thy voice, and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews has found us; therefore, we shall now go three days' journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.19 For I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go except by a mighty hand.20 But I will stretch out my hand and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof, and after that he will let you go.21 And I will give this people grace in the eyes of the Egyptians, and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty;22 but every woman shall demand of her neighbour and of her that sojourns in her house, vessels of silver and vessels of gold and clothing; and ye shall put [them] upon your sons and upon your daughters, and ye shall spoil Egypt.:
