1 Ora, um dia em que os filhos de Deus se apresentaram diante do Senhor, Satanás apareceu também no meio deles na presença do Senhor.2 O Senhor disse-lhe: De onde vens tu? Andei dando volta pelo mundo, respondeu Satanás, e passeando por ele.3 O Senhor disse-lhe: Notaste o meu servo Jó? Não há ninguém igual a ele na terra, íntegro, reto, temente a Deus e afastado do mal. Persevera sempre em sua integridade; foi em vão que me incitaste a perdê-lo.4 Pele por pele!, respondeu Satanás. O homem dá tudo o que tem para salvar a própria vida.5 Mas estende a tua mão, toca-lhe nos ossos, na carne; juro que te renegará em tua face.6 O Senhor disse a Satanás: Pois bem, ele está em teu poder, poupa-lhe apenas a vida.7 Satanás retirou-se da presença do Senhor e feriu Jó com uma lepra maligna, desde a planta dos pés até o alto da cabeça.8 E Jó tomou um caco de telha para se coçar, e assentou-se sobre a cinza.9 Sua mulher disse-lhe: Persistes ainda em tua integridade? Amaldiçoa a Deus, e morre!10 Falas, respondeu-lhe ele, como uma insensata. Aceitamos a felicidade da mão de Deus; não devemos também aceitar a infelicidade? Em tudo isso, Jó não pecou por palavras.11 Três amigos de Jó, Elifaz de Temã, Bildad de Chua e Sofar de Naama, tendo ouvido todo o mal que lhe tinha sucedido, vieram cada um de sua terra e combinaram ir juntos exprimir sua simpatia e suas consolações.12 Tendo de longe levantado os olhos, não o reconheceram; e puseram-se então a chorar, rasgaram as vestes, e lançaram para o céu poeira, que recaía sobre suas cabeças.13 Ficaram sentados no chão ao lado dele sete dias e sete noites, sem que nenhum lhe dirigisse a palavra, tão grande era a dor em que o viam mergulhado.

1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.2 And the LORD said unto Satan, Where dost thou come from? And Satan answered the LORD and said, From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it.3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God and has departed from evil and that he still retains his perfection, although thou didst incite me against him to destroy him without cause.4 And Satan answered the LORD and said, Skin for skin, all that a man has he will give for his life.5 But put forth thy hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, [and thou shalt see] if he does not blaspheme thee to thy face.6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he [is] in thy hand, but preserve his life.7 So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.8 And he took a potsherd to scratch himself with, and he was sitting among the ashes.9 Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Blaspheme God and die.10 But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.11 Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, [when] they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and each one rent his mantle and sprinkled dust upon his head toward heaven.13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word unto him; for they saw that [his] grief was very great.:
