1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:2 Porventura, responde o sábio como se falasse ao vento e enche de ar o seu ventre?3 Defende-se ele com fúteis argumentos, e com palavras que não servem para nada?4 Acabarás destruindo a piedade, reduzes a nada o respeito devido a Deus;5 pois é a iniqüidade que inspira teus discursos e adotas a linguagem dos impostores.6 É a tua boca que te condena, e não eu; são teus lábios que dão testemunho contra ti mesmo.7 És, porventura, o primeiro homem que nasceu, e foste tu gerado antes das colinas?8 Assististe, porventura, ao conselho de Deus, monopolizaste a sabedoria?9 Que sabes tu que nós ignoremos, que aprendeste que não nos seja familiar?10 Há entre nós também velhos de cabelos brancos, muito mais avançados em dias do que teu pai.11 Fazes pouco caso das consolações divinas, e das doces palavras que te são dirigidas?12 Por que te deixas levar pelo impulso de teu coração, e o que significam esses maus olhares?13 É contra Deus que ousas encolerizar-te, e que tua boca profere tais discursos!14 Que é o homem para que seja puro e o filho da mulher, para que seja justo?15 Nem mesmo de seus santos Deus se fia, e os céus não são puros a seus olhos;16 quanto mais do ser abominável e corrompido, o homem, que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?17 Ouve-me; vou instruir-te: eu te contarei o que vi,18 aquilo que os sábios ensinam, aquilo que seus pais não lhes ocultaram,19 {aos quais, somente, foi dada esta terra, e no meio dos quais não tinha penetrado estrangeiro algum}.20 Em todos os dias de sua vida o mau está angustiado, os anos do opressor são em número restrito,21 ruídos terrificantes ressoam-lhe aos ouvidos, no seio da paz, lhe sobrevém o destruidor.22 Ele não espera escapar das trevas, está destinado ao gume da espada.23 Anda às tontas à procura de seu pão, sabe que o dia das trevas está a seu lado.24 A tribulação e a angústia vêm sobre ele como um rei que vai para o combate,25 porque levantou a mão contra Deus, e desafiou o Todo-poderoso,26 correndo contra ele com a cabeça levantada, por detrás da grossura de seus escudos;27 porque cobriu de gordura o seu rosto, e deixou a gordura ajuntar-se sobre seus rins,28 habitando em cidades desoladas, em casas que foram abandonadas, destinadas a se tornarem montões de pedras;29 não se enriquecerá, nem os seus bens resistirão, não mais estenderá sua sombra sobre a terra,30 não escapará às trevas; o fogo queimará seus ramos, e sua flor será levada pelo vento.31 {Que não se fie na mentira: ficará prisioneiro dela; a mentira será a sua recompensa}.32 Suas ramagens secarão antes da hora, seus sarmentos não ficarão verdes;33 como a vinha, sacudirá seus frutos verdes, como a oliveira, deixará cair a flor.34 Pois a raça dos ímpios é estéril, e o fogo devora as tendas do suborno.35 Quem concebe o mal, gera a infelicidade: é o engano que amadurece em seu seio.

1 Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?3 Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?4 Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.5 For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.6 Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.7 Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?8 Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?9 What dost thou know that we do not? [What] dost thou understand, which [is] not in us?10 Among us [are] also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.11 [Are] the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?12 Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,13 that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?14 What [is] man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?15 Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.16 How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?17 Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that [which] I have seen,18 that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid [it],19 unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.20 The wicked man travails with pain all [his] days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.21 Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.22 He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.23 He wanders abroad for bread, [saying], Where [is it]? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.24 Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.25 Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,26 he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;27 for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on [his] flanks;28 and he dwelt in desolate cities [and] in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.29 He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.30 He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.31 He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.32 He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.33 He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.34 For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.35 They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.:
