1 No décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias aconteceu que Senaquerib, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e se apoderou delas.2 O rei da Assíria tinha enviado de Laquis a Jerusalém, contra o rei Ezequias, o general de exército com um poderoso contingente de tropas. Ele tomou posição ao pé do aqueduto do reservatório superior, no caminho do campo do pisoeiro.3 Eliacim, filho de Helcias, prefeito do palácio, foi ter com ele, junto com o escriba Sobna e o cronista Joaé, filho de Asaf.4 O general lhes disse: Eis o que direis a Ezequias: Assim fala o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: de onde te vem tanta confiança?5 Tu só dizes palavras vãs. Entretanto, é de prudência e de bravura que se precisa na guerra. Sobre quem, então, pões tua confiança para contra mim te revoltares?6 Eu o vejo: é com o Egito que tu contas, com esse caniço rachado que fere e transpassa a mão quando alguém sobre ele se apóia. Eis o que é o faraó, rei do Egito, para todos os que confiam nele.7 Dir-me-eis, sem dúvida, que é no Senhor, vosso Deus, que pondes vossa confiança. Mas não é esse Deus de quem Ezequias suprimiu os lugares altos e os altares, dizendo ao povo de Judá e Jerusalém: É somente diante desse altar que vos prostrareis?8 Pois então, faze uma convenção com meu soberano, o rei da Assíria. Eu fornecerei dois mil cavalos, se puderes encontrar cavaleiros para montá-los.9 Mas como serás capaz de repelir um só dos menores oficiais de meu soberano? Contas com o Egito para arranjar carros e cavaleiros?10 Porventura foi sem o consentimento do Senhor que ataquei esta terra para destruí-la? O Senhor foi quem me disse: Vai contra aquela terra e a destrói.11 Eliacim, Sobna e Joaé disseram ao general: Fala a teus servos em aramaico, pois nós entendemos esse dialeto; não nos fales em hebraico, posto que a turba que está sobre a muralha pode ouvir-nos.12 Porém o general replicou: Porventura é {unicamente} a teu soberano e a ti que meu soberano me encarregou de transmitir esta mensagem? Não é antes a esses homens que estão sobre as muralhas e que vão ser reduzidos, como vós, a comer seus excrementos e a beber sua urina?13 O general adiantou-se, então, e se pôs a gritar em hebraico: Escutai o que disse o grande rei, o rei da Assíria!14 Eis o que disse o rei: Não vos deixeis enganar por Ezequias; ele é incapaz de vos livrar.15 Que ele não vos leve a confiar no Senhor, dizendo que o Senhor vos livrará e que esta cidade não cairá nas mãos do rei da Assíria!16 Não escuteis o rei Ezequias! Eis o que vos diz o rei da Assíria: Fazei a paz comigo. Rendei-vos. Cada um de vós poderá comer o fruto de sua vinha e de sua figueira e beber a água de seu poço,17 até que eu venha conduzir-vos a uma terra semelhante à vossa, uma terra de trigo e de vinho, uma terra de cereais e de vinhas.18 Que Ezequias não abuse de vós dizendo que o Senhor vos livrará! Porventura os deuses das outras nações as livraram cada uma das mãos do rei da Assíria?19 Onde estão os deuses de Hamat e Arfad? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Porventura livraram eles a Samaria de minha mão?20 Dentre todos os deuses dessas terras qual é o que salvou sua terra de minha mão? Por que então o Senhor preservaria Jerusalém?21 O povo guardou silêncio. Não houve uma só palavra de resposta, pois o rei lhes havia proibido responder.22 Eliacím, filho de Helcias, prefeito do palácio, o escriba Sobna e o cronista Joaé, filho de Asaf, retomaram para junto de Ezequias, com as vestes rasgadas, e lhe relataram as palavras do general.

1 And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib the king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and seized on them.2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a strong army. And he halted by the aqueduct of the upper pool on the highway of the washer’s field.3 Then came forth unto him Elyakim, the son of Chilkiyahu, who was superintendent over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Yoach the son of Assaph, the recorder.4 And Rabshakeh said unto them,––Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus hath said the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherewith thou hast trusted?5 I have said, but it was only a word uttered with the lips, I have counsel and strength for the war. Now, on whom didst thou trust, that thou rebelledst against me?6 Behold, thou trustedst on yon cracked reed–staff, on Egypt; which, if a man lean on it, will enter into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh the king of Egypt to all that trust on him.7 But if thou shouldst say to me, In the Lord our God have we trusted: is he not the one whose high–places and whose altars Hezekiah hath removed, when he said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar shall ye prostrate yourselves?8 And now I pray thee, enter into a contest with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.9 How then wilt thou turn back the face of a single chieftain of the least of my masters’ servants, while thou hast put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?10 And now am I come up without the Lord‘s will against this land to destroy it? The Lord hath said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.11 Then said Elyakim and Shebna and Yoach unto Rabshakeh, Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jewish language, before the ears of the people that are on the wall.12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master then sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? is it not rather to the men who sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own excrements, and drink their own urine with you?13 Then stood Rabshakeh up, and called out in a loud voice in the Jewish language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.14 Thus hath said the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you;15 Neither let Hezekiah induce you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given up into the hand of the king of Assyria.16 Hearken not to Hezekiah; for thus hath said the king of Assyria, Make a treaty of peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig–tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern;17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.18 So that Hezekiah may not mislead you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?19 Where are the gods of Chamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvayim? and have they then delivered Samaria out of my hand?20 Who are they among all the gods of these countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?21 But they remained silent, and answered him not a word; for it was the king’s command, saying, Ye shall not answer him.22 Then came Elyakim the son of Chilkiyahu, that was superintendent over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Yoach the son of Assaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent; and they told him the words of Rabshakeh.
