1 Um filho sábio ama a disciplina, mas o incorrigível não aceita repreensões.2 O homem de bem goza do fruto de sua boca, mas o desejo dos pérfidos é a violência.3 Quem vigia sua boca guarda sua vida; quem muito abre seus lábios se perde.4 O preguiçoso cobiça, mas nada obtém. É o desejo dos homens diligentes que é satisfeito.5 O justo detesta a mentira; o ímpio só faz coisas vergonhosas e ignominiosas.6 A justiça protege o que caminha na integridade, mas a maldade arruína o pecador.7 Há quem parece rico, não tendo nada, há quem se faz de pobre e possui copiosas riquezas.8 A riqueza de um homem é o resgate de sua vida, mas o pobre está livre de ameaças.9 A luz do justo ilumina, enquanto a lâmpada dos maus se extingue.10 O orgulho só causa disputas; a sabedoria se acha com os que procuram aconselhar-se.11 Os bens que muito depressa se ajuntam se desvanecem; os acumulados pouco a pouco aumentam.12 Esperança retardada faz adoecer o coração; o desejo realizado, porém, é uma árvore de vida.13 Quem menospreza a palavra perder-se-á; quem respeita o preceito será recompensado.14 O ensinamento do sábio é uma fonte de vida para libertar-se dos laços da morte.15 Bom entendimento procura favor; o caminho dos pérfidos, porém, é escabroso.16 Todo homem prudente age com discernimento, mas o insensato põe em evidência sua loucura.17 Um mau mensageiro provoca a desgraça; o enviado fiel, porém, traz a saúde.18 Miséria e vergonha a quem recusa a disciplina; honra ao que aceita a reprimenda.19 O desejo cumprido deleita a alma. Os insensatos detestam os que fogem do mal.20 Quem visita os sábios torna-se sábio; quem se faz amigo dos insensatos perde-se.21 A desgraça persegue os pecadores; a felicidade é a recompensa dos justos.22 O homem de bem deixa sua herança para os filhos de seus filhos; ao justo foi reservada a fortuna do pecador.23 É abundante em alimento um campo preparado pelo pobre, mas há quem pereça por falta de justiça.24 Quem poupa a vara odeia seu filho; quem o ama, castiga-o na hora precisa.25 O justo come até se saciar, mas o ventre dos pérfidos conhece a penúria.

1 A wise son becometh so by the correction of his father; but a scorner hearkeneth not to rebuke.2 From the fruit of a man’s mouth doth he eat what is good; but the longing of the treacherous is for violence.3 He that watcheth his mouth guardeth his soul; but he that openeth wide his lips prepareth himself destruction.4 The sluggard longeth in his soul, and there cometh nothing; but the soul of the diligent will be abundantly gratified.5 The righteous hateth the word of falsehood; but the wicked bringeth shame and dishonor.6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright on his way; but wickedness perverteth the man of sin.7 There is some one that pretendeth to be rich without having any thing; another that pretendeth to be poor while having abundant wealth.8 As the ransom of a man’s life hath he often to give his riches; but the poor heareth no threat.9 The light of the righteous burneth joyfully; but the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.10 Only through presumptuous conduct doth man produce contention; but with the well–advised is wisdom.11 Wealth gotten by vain deeds will be diminished; but he that gathereth by close labor will increase it.12 Expectation long deferred maketh the heart sick; but a tree of life is a desire which is fulfilled.13 Whoso despiseth the word shall fall in debt to it; but he that feareth the commandment will be rewarded.14 The instruction of the wise is a source of life, teaching to avoid the snares of death.15 Good intelligence giveth grace; but the way of the treacherous is hard.16 Every prudent man acteth with knowledge; but a fool spreadeth abroad his folly.17 A wicked messenger falleth into unhappiness; but a faithful ambassador bringeth healing.18 Poverty and disgrace will overtake him that rejecteth correction; but he that observeth admonition will be honored.19 A desire accomplished is pleasant to the soul; but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.20 He that walketh with wise men will become wise; but he that associateth with fools will be destroyed.21 Evil pursueth the sinners; but the righteous will God repay with happiness.22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children; but the wealth of the sinner is treasured up for the righteous.23 Much food bringeth the new–tilled ground of the poor; but there are many others that are taken away through injustice.24 He that withholdeth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chastiseth him betimes.25 The righteous eateth to satisfy his desire to eat; but the belly of the wicked always suffereth want.
