1 Por ventura não clama a Sabedoria e a inteligência não eleva a sua voz?2 No cume das montanhas posta-se ela, e nas encruzilhadas dos caminhos.3 Alça sua voz na entrada das torres, junto às portas, nas proximidades da cidade.4 É a vós, ó homens, que eu apelo; minha voz se dirige aos filhos dos homens.5 Ó simples, aprendei a prudência, adquiri a inteligência, ó insensatos.6 Prestai atenção, pois! Coisas magníficas vos anuncio, de meus lábios só sairá retidão,7 porque minha boca proclama a verdade e meus lábios detestam a iniqüidade.8 Todas as palavras de minha boca são justas, nelas nada há de falso nem de tortuoso.9 São claras para os que as entendem e retas para o que chegou à ciência.10 Recebei a instrução e não o dinheiro. Preferi a ciência ao fino ouro,11 pois a Sabedoria vale mais que as pérolas e jóia alguma a pode igualar.12 Eu, a Sabedoria, sou amiga da prudência, possuo uma ciência profunda.13 O temor do Senhor é o ódio ao mal. Orgulho, arrogância, caminho perverso, boca mentirosa: eis o que eu detesto.14 Meu é o conselho e o bom êxito, minha a inteligência, minha a força.15 Por mim reinam os reis e os legisladores decretam a justiça;16 por mim governam os magistrados e os magnatas regem a terra.17 Amo os que me amam. Quem me procura, encontra-me.18 Comigo estão a riqueza e a glória, os bens duráveis e a justiça.19 Mais precioso que o mais fino ouro é o meu fruto, meu produto tem mais valor que a mais fina prata.20 Sigo o caminho da justiça, no meio da senda da eqüidade.21 Deixo os meus haveres para os que me amam e acumulo seus tesouros.22 O Senhor me criou, como primícia de suas obras, desde o princípio, antes do começo da terra.23 Desde a eternidade fui formada, antes de suas obras dos tempos antigos.24 Ainda não havia abismo quando fui concebida, e ainda as fontes das águas não tinham brotado.25 Antes que assentados fossem os montes, antes dos outeiros, fui dada à luz;26 antes que fossem feitos a terra e os campos e os primeiros elementos da poeira do mundo.27 Quando ele preparava os céus, ali estava eu; quando traçou o horizonte na superfície do abismo,28 quando firmou as nuvens no alto, quando dominou as fontes do abismo,29 quando impôs regras ao mar, para que suas águas não transpusessem os limites, quando assentou os fundamentos da terra,30 junto a ele estava eu como artífice, brincando todo o tempo diante dele,31 brincando sobre o globo de sua terra, achando as minhas delícias junto aos filhos dos homens.32 E agora, meus filhos, escutai-me: felizes aqueles que guardam os meus caminhos.33 Ouvi minha instrução para serdes sábios, não a rejeiteis.34 Feliz o homem que me ouve e que vela todos os dias à minha porta e guarda os umbrais de minha casa!35 Pois quem me acha encontra a vida e alcança o favor do Senhor.36 Mas quem me ofende, prejudica-se a si mesmo; quem me odeia, ama a morte.
1 Behold, wisdom calleth, and understanding sendeth forth her voice,2 On the top of high places, by the wayside, at the house where there are many paths doth she place herself.3 Alongside of gates, at the opening of the city, at the entrance of the towndoors doth she call loudly,4 Unto you, O men, I call, and my voice goeth forth to the sons of men,5 Learn, O ye simple, to understand prudence: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.6 Hear! for of noble things will I speak; and the opening of my lips shall be of what is equitable.7 For truth uttereth my palate ever, and the abomination of my lips is wickedness.8 In righteousness are all the sayings of my mouth, there is in them nothing crooked or perverse.9 They are all evident to the man of understanding, and correct to those that have obtained knowledge.10 Accept my correction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.11 For wisdom is better than pearls; and all the things that men wish for are not equal to her.12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and the knowledge of discreet thoughts do I discover.13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride and arrogance, and the evil way: and the mouth of perverseness do I hate.14 Mine are counsel and sound wisdom: I am understanding; mine is might.15 Through me do kings reign, and chieftains give decrees in righteousness.16 Through me do princes rule, and the nobles, even all the judges of the earth.17 I indeed love those that love me: and those that seek me earnestly shall find me.18 Riches and honor are with me, yea, enduring wealth and righteousness.19 My fruit is better than gold, and than fine gold; and my products, than choice silver.20 On the road of righteousness do I walk firmly, in the midst the paths of justice:21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit a lasting possession; and their treasures will I fill22 The Lord created me as the beginning of his way, the first of his works from the commencement,23 From eternity was I appointed chief, from the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.24 When there were yet no depths, was I brought forth; when there were yet no springs laden heavily with water.25 Before the mountains were yet sunk down, before the hills was I brought forth:26 While as yet he had not made the land and open fields, nor the chief of the dust of the world.27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle over the face of the deep;28 When he fastened the skies above; when the springs of the deep became strong;29 When he assigned to the sea his decree, that the waters should not transgress his order: when he established firmly the foundations of the earth:30 Then was I near him, as a nursling: and I was day by day his delights, playing before him at all times;31 Playing in the world, his earth; and having my delights with the sons of men.32 And now, O children of men, hearken unto me! for happy those that observe my ways.33 Hear correction, and be wise, and reject it not.34 Happy is the man that hearkeneth unto me, watching day by day at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.35 For he who findeth me findeth life, and he obtaineth favor from the Lord.36 But he that sinneth against me doth violence to his own soul: all those that hate me love death.
