1 Mais vale um pobre que caminha na integridade que um insensato com lábios mentirosos.2 Sem a ciência, nem mesmo o zelo é bom: quem precipita seus passos, desvia-se.3 A loucura de um homem o leva a um mau caminho; é contra o Senhor que seu coração se irrita.4 A riqueza aumenta o número de amigos, o pobre é abandonado pelo seu {único} companheiro.5 O falso testemunho não fica sem castigo; o que profere mentira não escapará.6 O homem generoso possui muitos lisonjeiros: todos se tornam amigos de quem dá.7 Todos os irmãos do pobre o odeiam, quanto mais seus amigos não hão de se afastar dele? Está em busca de palavras, mas não terá nada.8 Quem adquire bom senso ama sua alma; o que observa a prudência encontra a felicidade.9 O falso testemunho não fica impune; o que profere mentira perecerá.10 Não convém ao insensato viver entre delícias, muito menos ainda a um escravo dominar os chefes.11 Um homem sábio sabe conter a sua cólera, e tem por honra passar por cima de uma ofensa.12 Cólera de rei, rugido de leão; favor de rei, orvalho sobre a erva.13 Um filho insensato é a desgraça de seu pai; a mulher intrigante é uma goteira inesgotável.14 Casas e bens são a herança dos pais, mas uma mulher sensata é um dom do Senhor.15 A preguiça cai no torpor: a alma indolente terá fome.16 O que observa o preceito guarda sua vida; quem descuida de seu proceder morrerá.17 Quem se apieda do pobre empresta ao Senhor, que lhe restituirá o benefício.18 Corrige teu filho enquanto há esperança, mas não te enfureças até fazê-lo perecer.19 O homem iracundo sofrerá um castigo; se o libertares, aumentarás a sua pena.20 Ouve os conselhos, aceita a instrução: tu serás sábio para o futuro.21 Há muitos planos no coração do homem, mas é a vontade do Senhor que se realiza.22 O encanto de um homem é a sua caridade: mais vale o pobre que o mentiroso.23 O temor do Senhor conduz à vida; {o que o possui} é saciado: passará a noite sem a visita da desgraça.24 O preguiçoso põe sua mão no prato e nem sequer a leva à boca.25 Castiga o zombador e o simples tornar-se-á sábio; repreende o homem sensato e ele compreenderá por quê.26 Quem maltrata seu pai, quem expulsa sua mãe é um filho infame do qual todos se envergonham.27 Cessa, meu filho, de ouvir as advertências e isto servirá para te afastares da sabedoria!28 O testemunho falso zomba da justiça, a boca dos ímpios devora a iniqüidade.29 As varas estão preparadas para os mofadores e os golpes para o dorso dos insensatos.
1 Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than one of perverse lips, who is a fool.2 Also in the want of knowledge in the soul there is nothing good; and he that hasteneth with his feet misseth the right path.3 The folly of a man perverteth his way, and against the Lord will his heart rage.4 Wealth bringeth many friends; but the poor becometh separated from his only friend.5 A false witness shall not remain unpunished, and he that uttereth lies shall not escape.6 Many will entreat the favor of the liberal man; and every one is the friend to him that bestoweth gifts.7 All the brothers of the poor hate him: how much more do his friends go far away from him! he pursueth their promises; but these are all that he hath.8 He that getteth intelligence loveth his own soul: he that guardeth understanding will find happiness.9 A false witness shall not remain unpunished, and he that uttereth lies shall perish.10 Delicacy is not seemly for a fool: much less for a servant to have rule over princes.11 It is intelligence in man to be slow in his anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.12 Like the roaring of a young lion is the wrath of a king: as dew upon the herbs is his favor.13 A calamity unto his father is a foolish son; and a continual dropping are the quarrels of a wife.14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers; but from the Lord cometh an intelligent wife.15 Slothfulness casteth man into a deep sleep; and an indolent soul will suffer hunger.16 He that observeth the commandment guardeth his own soul: but he that disregardeth directing his ways aright shall die.17 He lendeth unto the Lord that is liberal to the poor, and his good deed will he repay unto him.18 Chastise thy son, for there is hope; and let not thy soul spare him for his crying.19 A man of great fury must suffer punishment; for if thou deliver him, thou must still do it again.20 Hear counsel, and accept correction, in order that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.21 There are many thoughts in a mans heart; but the counsel of the Lord alone will stand firm.22 The longing of a man is to exercise his kindness; and a poor man is better than a liar.23 The fear of the Lord leadeth unto life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.24 When a slothful man hath hidden his hand in the dish, then will he not even bring it back to his mouth.25 Smite a scorner, and the simple will become prudent; and if one that hath understanding be admonished, he will understand knowledge.26 He that plundereth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that bringeth shame and dishonor.27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth thee to err from the sayings of knowledge.28 An ungodly witness scorneth at justice, and the mouth of the wicked swalloweth mischief.29 Punishments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.
