João 11

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. 2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."

4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it." 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let’s go into Judea again."

8 The disciples asked him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?"

9 Jesus answered, "Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him." 11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."

12 The disciples therefore said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead. 15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him."

16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus,*11:16 "Didymus" means "Twin". said to his fellow disciples, "Let’s also go, that we may die with him."

17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia*11:18 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away. 19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."

23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world."

28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling you."

29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."

32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died."

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, 34 and said, "Where have you laid him?"

They told him, "Lord, come and see."

35 Jesus wept.

36 The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!" 37 Some of them said, "Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"

38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone."

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

40 Jesus said to her, "Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?"

41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying.*11:41 NU omits "from the place where the dead man was lying." Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me." 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.

Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." 51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?" 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

Jesus uppväcker Lasarus

1 *Luk 10:38f. En man som hette Lasarus var sjuk. Han var från Betania*11:1BetaniaKan översättas "fattighuset" (jfr 12:5f)., den by där Maria och hennes syster Marta bodde. 2 *Joh 12:3. Det var Maria som smorde Herren med väldoftande olja och torkade hans fötter med sitt hår, och nu var hennes bror Lasarus sjuk. 3 Systrarna skickade då bud till Jesus och lät säga: "Herre, den du har kär ligger sjuk." 4 *Joh 9:3. När Jesus hörde det, sade han: "Den sjukdomen slutar inte med döden. Den är till Guds ära, för att Guds Son ska bli förhärligad genom den." 5 Jesus älskade Marta och hennes syster och Lasarus.

6 När Jesus nu hörde att Lasarus var sjuk, stannade han ändå två dagar där han var. 7 Därefter sade han till sina lärjungar: "Låt oss gå tillbaka till Judeen." 8 *Joh 10:31. Lärjungarna sade till honom: "Rabbi, nyss försökte judarna stena dig, och nu går du dit igen!" 9 *Joh 9:4f. Jesus svarade: "Har inte dagen tolv timmar? Den som vandrar om dagen snavar inte, för han ser denna världens ljus. 10 Men den som vandrar om natten, han snavar eftersom ljuset inte finns i honom."

11 *Matt 9:24. Efter att han sagt detta tillade han: "Vår vän Lasarus sover. Men jag går för att väcka honom." 12 Då sade lärjungarna till honom: "Herre, sover han så blir han frisk." 13 Jesus hade talat om hans död, men de trodde att han talade om vanlig sömn. 14 Då sade Jesus helt öppet till dem: "Lasarus är död. 15 Och för er skull, för att ni ska tro, är jag glad att jag inte var där. Men låt oss nu gå till honom." 16 *Mark 10:32. Tomas, som kallades Tvillingen*11:16TvillingenTomas är arameiska för "tvilling"., sade då till de andra lärjungarna: "Låt oss gå, vi också, och dö tillsammans med honom."

17 När Jesus kom fram, fann han att Lasarus redan hade legat fyra dagar i graven. 18 Betania låg nära Jerusalem, ungefär tre kilometer*11:18tre kilometerOrdagrant: "femton stadier" (längdmått om 190 meter). därifrån. 19 Många judar hade kommit ut till Marta och Maria för att trösta dem i sorgen över deras bror. 20 När Marta fick höra att Jesus hade kommit, gick hon ut och mötte honom. Men Maria stannade kvar hemma.

21 Marta sade till Jesus: "Herre, om du hade varit här skulle min bror inte ha dött. 22 Men också nu vet jag att Gud kommer att ge dig vad du än ber honom om." 23 Jesus sade: "Din bror ska uppstå." 24 *Dan 12:2, Luk 14:14, Joh 5:29. Marta svarade: "Jag vet att han ska uppstå, vid uppståndelsen på den yttersta dagen." 25 Jesus sade: "Jag är uppståndelsen och livet. Den som tror på mig ska leva om han än dör, 26 *Joh 8:51. och den som lever och tror på mig ska aldrig någonsin dö. Tror du detta?" 27 *Matt 16:16, Joh 4:42. Hon svarade: "Ja, Herre. Jag tror att du är Messias, Guds Son, han som skulle komma till världen."

28 När hon hade sagt detta, gick hon och kallade på sin syster Maria och viskade: "Mästaren är här och kallar på dig." 29 Så snart hon hörde det, reste hon sig och gick ut till honom. 30 Jesus hade inte gått in i byn än, utan var kvar på platsen där Marta hade mött honom. 31 Judarna som var hemma hos Maria och tröstade henne såg att hon reste sig hastigt och gick ut. Då följde de efter henne i tron att hon skulle gå till graven för att gråta där.

32 När Maria kom till platsen där Jesus var och fick se honom, föll hon ner vid hans fötter och sade till honom: "Herre, om du hade varit här skulle min bror inte ha dött." 33 När Jesus såg hur hon grät och hur judarna som följt med henne grät, blev han djupt rörd och skakad i sin ande 34 och frågade: "Var har ni lagt honom?" De svarade: "Herre, kom och se." 35 *Luk 19:41. Jesus grät. 36 Då sade judarna: "Se hur han älskade honom!" 37 *Joh 9:6f. Men några av dem sade: "Kunde inte han som öppnade ögonen på den blinde ha gjort så att Lasarus inte dog?"

38 Jesus blev åter djupt rörd i sitt inre och gick fram till graven. Det var en klippgrav med en sten för öppningen. 39 Jesus sade: "Ta bort stenen!" Den dödes syster Marta sade till honom: "Herre, han luktar redan. Det är fjärde dagen." 40 Jesus sade till henne: "Har jag inte sagt dig att om du tror ska du få se Guds härlighet?" 41 Då tog de bort stenen, och Jesus lyfte blicken mot himlen och sade: "Far, jag prisar dig för att du hör mig. 42 Jag vet att du alltid hör mig, men jag säger det för folket som står här, för att de ska tro att du har sänt mig." 43 *Luk 7:14f. När han hade sagt detta, ropade han med hög röst: "Lasarus, kom ut!" 44 Då kom den döde ut, med fötter och händer inlindade i bindlar och med ansiktet täckt av en duk. Jesus sade till dem: "Gör honom fri och låt honom gå."

45 *Joh 12:42. Många judar som hade kommit till Maria och sett vad Jesus gjorde kom till tro på honom. 46 Men några av dem gick till fariseerna och berättade för dem vad Jesus hade gjort.

47 Översteprästerna och fariseerna kallade då samman Stora rådet och sade: "Vad gör vi? Den här mannen gör många tecken. 48 Låter vi honom hålla på så här kommer alla att tro på honom, och sedan kommer romarna och tar ifrån oss både templet och folket." 49 En av dem, Kaifas som var överstepräst det året, sade till dem: "Ni förstår ingenting. 50 *Joh 18:14. Inser ni inte att det är bättre för er att en man dör för folket än att hela folket går under?"

51 Detta sade han inte av sig själv, utan som överstepräst det året profeterade han att Jesus skulle dö för folket, 52 *Joh 10:16, 1 Joh 2:2. och inte bara för folket utan också för att samla och förena Guds skingrade barn. 53 *Matt 12:14. Från den dagen bestämde de sig för att döda honom. 54 Jesus rörde sig därför inte längre öppet bland judarna utan drog sig undan därifrån till landsbygden nära öknen, till en stad som heter Efraim*11:54EfraimStaden låg ca 2 mil nordost om Jerusalem.. Där stannade han tillsammans med sina lärjungar.

55 *2 Krön 30:17. Judarnas påsk närmade sig, och många gick från landsbygden upp till Jerusalem före påsken för att rena sig*11:55rena sigDen som blivit oren (t ex genom att röra vid en död, se 4 Mos 19, 3 Mos 11-15) skulle genomgå en reningsrit innan han fick besöka templet igen. Rituell orenhet var inte samma sak som synd i moralisk mening.. 56 De sökte efter Jesus och sade till varandra där de stod på tempelplatsen: "Vad tror ni? Kommer han inte alls till högtiden?" 57 Men översteprästerna och fariseerna hade gett order om att den som visste var han fanns skulle tala om det så att de kunde gripa honom.
