1 After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick. 3 Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?" 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.

7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii*6:7 A denarius was a silver coin worth about a day’s wages for an agricultural laborer, so 200 denarii would be between 6 and 7 month’s pay. worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little."

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?"

10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired. 12 When they were filled, he said to his disciples, "Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost." 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, "This is truly the prophet who comes into the world." 15 Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea. 17 They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 18 The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing. 19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,*6:19 25 to 30 stadia is about 5 to 6 kilometers or about 3 to 4 miles they saw Jesus walking on the sea✝6:19 See Job 9:8 and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid. 20 But he said to them, "It is I.*6:20 or, I AM Don’t be afraid." 21 They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

22 On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone. 23 However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?"

26 Jesus answered them, "Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him."

28 They said therefore to him, "What must we do, that we may work the works of God?"

29 Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

30 They said therefore to him, "What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven*6:31 Greek and Hebrew use the same word for "heaven", "the heavens", "the sky", and "the air". to eat.’"✝6:31 Exodus 16:4; Nehemiah 9:15; Psalms 78:24-25

32 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world."

34 They said therefore to him, "Lord, always give us this bread."

35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe. 37 All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day. 40 This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

41 The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down out of heaven." 42 They said, "Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?"

43 Therefore Jesus answered them, "Don’t murmur among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ ✝6:45 Isaiah 54:13 Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me. 46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father. 47 Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

52 The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

53 Jesus therefore said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves. 54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me. 58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever." 59 He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

60 Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?"

61 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, "Does this cause you to stumble? 62 Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life. 64 But there are some of you who don’t believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him. 65 He said, "For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father."

66 At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him. 67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You don’t also want to go away, do you?"

68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

70 Jesus answered them, "Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?" 71 Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.

Jesus mättar fem tusen män

När Jesus lyfte blicken och såg att det kom mycket folk till honom, sade han till Filippus: "Var ska vi köpa bröd så att de får något att äta?" 6 Det sade han för att pröva honom. Själv visste han vad han skulle göra. 7 Filippus svarade: "Bröd för tvåhundra denarer*6:7tvåhundra denarerMotsvarade åtta månadslöner för den enkle arbetaren (jfr Matt 20:2). räcker inte för att alla ska få var sin bit!" 8 *Joh 1:40. En annan av hans lärjungar, Andreas, bror till Simon Petrus, sade till honom: 9 *2 Kung 4:43. "Här är en pojke som har fem kornbröd och två fiskar. Men vad räcker det till så många?"

10 Jesus sade: "Låt folket slå sig ner." Det var gott om gräs på platsen, och de slog sig ner. Det var omkring fem tusen män. 11 *Joh 21:13. Jesus tog bröden, tackade Gud*6:11tackade GudDen judiska bordsbönen som troligen användes redan på Jesu tid lyder än idag: "Lovad är du, Herre vår Gud, världens Kung som frambringar bröd ur jorden" (jfr Ps 104:14). och delade ut till dem som var där, likaså av fiskarna, så mycket de ville ha. 12 När de var mätta sade han till sina lärjungar: "Samla ihop bitarna som blev över så att inget går förlorat." 13 De samlade ihop dem och fyllde tolv korgar med bitarna som blev över efter de fem kornbröden när de ätit.

14 *5 Mos 18:15, 18, Joh 1:21, 7:40. När människorna såg vilket tecken han hade gjort, sade de: "Han måste vara Profeten som ska komma till världen!" 15 *Joh 18:36. Jesus förstod att de tänkte komma och göra honom till kung med våld, och han drog sig undan upp till berget igen, helt ensam.

Jesus går på vattnet

16 *Matt 14:22f, Mark 6:45f. När det blev kväll gick hans lärjungar ner till sjön 17 och steg i båten för att ta sig över till Kapernaum på andra sidan sjön. Det var redan mörkt, och Jesus hade fortfarande inte kommit till dem. 18 Det blåste hårt och sjön började gå hög.

19 När de hade kommit ungefär en halvmil*6:19en halvmilOrdagrant: "tjugofem eller trettio stadier" (mitt ute på Galileiska sjön). ut fick de se Jesus komma gående på sjön och närma sig båten, och de blev förskräckta. 20 Men han sade till dem: "Det Är Jag.*6:20 Det Är JagOrdagrant: "Jag Är" (en anspelning på Guds namn Jhvh, jfr 8:24 med not). Var inte rädda!" 21 Då ville de ta upp honom i båten. Och strax var båten framme vid stranden dit de var på väg.

Jesus är livets bröd

22 Nästa dag stod folket på andra sidan sjön. De hade sett att det bara hade funnits en båt där och att Jesus inte gått ombord med sina lärjungar, utan att de hade gett sig av ensamma. 23 Då kom andra båtar från Tiberias och lade till nära platsen där de hade ätit brödet efter att Herren uttalat tacksägelsen*6:23uttalat tacksägelsenPå grekiska eucharistésantos (jfr "eukaristi", nattvard, och vers 53f).. 24 När folket såg att Jesus inte var där och inte heller hans lärjungar, gick de i båtarna och kom till Kapernaum för att söka efter Jesus. 25 De fann honom där på andra sidan sjön och frågade honom: "Rabbi, när kom du hit?"

26 Jesus svarade dem: "Jag säger er sanningen: Ni söker mig inte för att ni har sett tecken, utan för att ni fick äta av bröden och bli mätta. 27 *Joh 4:14, 6:50f, 54, 58. Arbeta inte för den mat som tar slut, utan för den mat som består och ger evigt liv och som Människosonen ska ge er. På honom har Gud Fadern satt sitt sigill*6:27satt sitt sigillSymbol för godkännande och auktoritet (jfr Est 3:12, Dan 6:17).." 28 De frågade honom: "Vad ska vi göra för att utföra Guds verk?" 29 *1 Joh 3:23. Jesus svarade: "Detta är Guds verk: att ni tror på den som han har sänt."

30 *Joh 2:18. Då sade de till honom: "Vad gör du då för tecken, så att vi kan se det och tro på dig? Vad kan du göra? 31 *1 Kor 10:3. Våra fäder fick äta manna i öknen, som det står skrivet: Han gav dem bröd från himlen att äta."*6:31 2 Mos 16:4f, Neh 9:15, Ps 105:40.32 Jesus sade till dem: "Jag säger er sanningen: Det var inte Mose som gav er brödet från himlen, det är min Far som ger er det sanna brödet från himlen. 33 Guds bröd är det*6:33detAnnan översättning: "den" (alltså Jesus, jfr vers 35, 51). som kommer ner från himlen och ger världen liv." 34 Då sade de till honom: "Herre, ge oss alltid det brödet!"

35 *Jes 55:1f, Joh 4:14, 7:37. Jesus svarade: "Jag är livets bröd. Den som kommer till mig ska aldrig hungra, och den som tror på mig ska aldrig någonsin törsta. 36 Men som jag sagt er: Ni har sett mig och tror ändå inte. 37 *Joh 17:2, 6. Alla som Fadern ger mig kommer till mig, och den som kommer till mig ska jag aldrig visa bort. 38 *Matt 26:39, Luk 22:42. Jag har inte kommit ner från himlen för att göra min egen vilja, utan hans vilja som har sänt mig. 39 *Joh 10:28f, 17:12, 18:9. Och detta är hans vilja som har sänt mig: att jag inte ska förlora någon enda av alla dem som han har gett mig, utan låta dem uppstå på den yttersta dagen. 40 *Joh 3:15f. Ja, detta är min Fars vilja: att var och en som ser Sonen och tror på honom ska ha evigt liv, och jag ska låta honom uppstå på den yttersta dagen."

41 Judarna började klaga över att han hade sagt: "Jag är brödet som kommit ner från himlen." 42 *Matt 13:55, Luk 4:22, Joh 7:27. De sade: "Den här Jesus, är inte han Josefs son? Känner inte vi hans far och mor? Hur kan han då säga: Jag har kommit ner från himlen?"

43 Jesus svarade: "Sluta klaga sinsemellan. 44 Ingen kan komma till mig om inte Fadern som har sänt mig drar honom, och jag ska låta honom uppstå på den yttersta dagen. 45 Det står skrivet hos profeterna: De ska alla ha blivit undervisade av Gud. Var och en som har lyssnat till Fadern och lärt av honom kommer till mig.*6:45 Jes 54:13, Jer 31:33f.46 *Matt 11:27, Luk 10:22, Joh 1:18. Ingen har sett Fadern utom han som är från Gud, han har sett Fadern. 47 *Joh 3:36. Jag säger er sanningen: Den som tror har evigt liv. 48 Jag är livets bröd. 49 *Hebr 3:17f. Era fäder åt mannat i öknen, och de dog. 50 Här är brödet som kommer ner från himlen för att man ska äta av det och inte dö. 51 *Joh 3:13. Jag är det levande brödet som har kommit ner från himlen. Den som äter av det brödet ska leva i evighet. Och brödet som jag ger är mitt kött, för att världen ska leva."

52 Judarna började då tvista med varandra och säga: "Hur kan han ge oss sitt kött att äta?" 53 Jesus svarade: "Jag säger er sanningen: Om ni inte äter Människosonens kött och dricker hans blod har ni inte liv i er. 54 Den som äter mitt kött och dricker mitt blod har evigt liv, och jag ska låta honom uppstå på den yttersta dagen. 55 Mitt kött är verklig mat och mitt blod är verklig dryck. 56 *Joh 15:4. Den som äter mitt kött och dricker mitt blod förblir i mig och jag i honom. 57 Liksom den levande Fadern har sänt mig och jag lever genom Fadern, ska också den som äter mig leva genom mig. 58 Detta är brödet som har kommit ner från himlen, inte som det bröd fäderna åt och sedan dog. Den som äter det här brödet ska leva i evighet." 59 Detta sade han när han undervisade i synagogan i Kapernaum.
