1 For, behold, the Lord, GOD of Hosts, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah supply and support,

the whole supply of bread,

and the whole supply of water;

2 the mighty man,

the man of war,

the judge,

the prophet,

the diviner,

the elder,

3 the captain of fifty,

the honorable man,

the counselor,

the skilled craftsman,

and the clever enchanter.

4 I will give boys to be their princes,

and children shall rule over them.

5 The people will be oppressed,

everyone by another,

and everyone by his neighbor.

The child will behave himself proudly against the old man,

and the wicked against the honorable.

6 Indeed a man shall take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying,

"You have clothing, you be our ruler,

and let this ruin be under your hand."

7 In that day he will cry out, saying, "I will not be a healer;

for in my house is neither bread nor clothing.

You shall not make me ruler of the people."

8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen;

because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD,

to provoke the eyes of his glory.

9 The look of their faces testify against them.

They parade their sin like Sodom.

They don’t hide it.

Woe to their soul!

For they have brought disaster upon themselves.

10 Tell the righteous "Good!"

For they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

11 Woe to the wicked!

Disaster is upon them;

for the deeds of his hands will be paid back to him.

12 As for my people, children are their oppressors,

and women rule over them.

My people, those who lead you cause you to err,

and destroy the way of your paths.

13 The LORD stands up to contend,

and stands to judge the peoples.

14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of his people

and their leaders:

"It is you who have eaten up the vineyard.

The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

15 What do you mean that you crush my people,

and grind the face of the poor?" says the Lord, the LORD of Hosts.

16 Moreover the LORD said, "Because the daughters of Zion are arrogant,

and walk with outstretched necks and flirting eyes,

walking to trip as they go,

jingling ornaments on their feet;

17 therefore the Lord brings sores on the crown of the head of the women of Zion,

and the LORD will make their scalps bald."

18 In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, the headbands, the crescent necklaces, 19 the earrings, the bracelets, the veils, 20 the headdresses, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume containers, the charms, 21 the signet rings, the nose rings, 22 the fine robes, the capes, the cloaks, the purses, 23 the hand mirrors, the fine linen garments, the tiaras, and the shawls.

24 It shall happen that instead of sweet spices, there shall be rottenness;

instead of a belt, a rope;

instead of well set hair, baldness;

instead of a robe, a wearing of sackcloth;

and branding instead of beauty.

25 Your men shall fall by the sword,

and your mighty in the war.

26 Her gates shall lament and mourn.

She shall be desolate and sit on the ground.

1 O Senhor dos exércitos celestiais cortará o fornecimento de água e de alimento a Jerusalém e a Judá, e matará os seus chefes;2 destruirá os seus exércitos, os seus juízes, profetas, anciãos, chefes militares, homens de negócio, juristas, mágicos e políticos.4 Os reis de Israel serão como criancinhas, governando infantilmente.5 E prevalecerá a pior espécie de anarquia - cada um se voltará contra o seu próximo, vizinhos contra vizinhos, os jovens contra a autoridade, os criminosos contra a gente de bem - o povo viverá sob a opressão.6 Naqueles dias dirá uma pessoa ao seu irmão: Sei que tens alguma roupa a mais, além da que vestes. Por isso sê tu o nosso rei, e tenta governar toda esta ruína.7 Não!, será a resposta. Não posso dar ajuda nenhuma. Nem sequer tenho roupa nem alimentos a mais. Não me metam nisso.8 Os governantes de Israel serão completamente arruinados, porque os judeus falaram contra o seu Deus, e não o adoram; ofendem a sua glória.9 Vê-se mesmo, até pela cara deles, o que fizeram, e como são culpados. E ainda por cima se gabam do seu pecado ser igual ao de Sodoma; não têm vergonha alguma! Que catástrofe! Eles mesmos processaram a sua própria condenação.10 No entanto tudo correrá bem para os justos que são de Deus. Digam-lhes, Que boa recompensa vocês vão ter pelas vossas obras!11 Mas aos que repelem Deus digam, A vossa condenação é certa. Terão a recompensa justa dos vossos maus actos.12 Ó povo meu! Não estão a ver como os vossos governantes são loucos. São fracos como mulheres; são irresponsáveis como criancinhas brincando aos reis! Serão isto governantes? Certamente que não! Antes vos levam pela via da ruína.13 Mas o Senhor se levanta! Ele é como o grande acusador público, denunciando o seu povo!14 Os primeiros a sentirem o peso da sua condenação serão os anciãos e os príncipes, porque defraudaram o povo; encheram-se com o que roubaram aos pobres.15 Como ousaram vocês moer o meu povo assim desta maneira, até ao pó da terra?, perguntar-lhes-á o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais.16 Depois julgará as altivas mulheres judias, que andam de pescoço erguido, com vaidade, tilintando com as argolas que trazem à volta dos tornozelos, lançando olhares descarados quando passam entre a multidão na rua.17 O Senhor fará aparecer tinha e as suas cabeças aparecerão nuas para todos verem, sem qualquer ornamento.18 Não andarão mais com enfeites nas pernas, nem com os seus ornamentos, porque o Senhor destruir-lhes-á toda aquela beleza artificiosa.19 Desaparecerão os colares, as pulseiras, os véus, assim como os diademas no cabelo, os enfeites dos braços, os brincos, as caixinhas de perfume, os anéis e as arrecadas, os vestidos de festa, as capas, os pentes para enfeitar o cabelo, os broches e bolsas, os espelhos, as finas capinhas de linho, as toucas, as rendas.24 E será que em vez de cheirarem bem a perfumes raros, hão-de exalar cheiro fedorento; em vez de ricas faixas em volta da cintura, usarão simples cordas; os seus belos penteados cairão e ficarão calvas; e em lugar de linda roupagem usarão sacos para se vestirem. Toda a sua beleza desaparecerá. Ficarão apenas com a vergonha e com a desgraça.25 Seus maridos morrerão na guerra. As mulheres, profundamente desalentadas, chorarão, sentadas no chão.
