1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman: 3 if, when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; 4 then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him: whereas if he had taken warning he should have delivered his soul. 6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned, and the sword come, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. 7 So thou, son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 8 When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die, and thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at thine hand. 9 Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he turn not from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but thou hast delivered thy soul. 10 And thou, son of man, say unto the house of Israel: Thus ye speak, saying, Our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we pine away in them; how then should we live? 11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 12 And thou, son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness: neither shall he that is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sinneth. 13 When I say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his righteousness, and commit iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in his iniquity that he hath committed, therein shall he die. 14 Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; 15 if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. 16 None of his sins that he hath committed shall be remembered against him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. 17 Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. 18 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die therein. 19 And when the wicked turneth from his wickedness, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. 20 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways. 21 And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten. 22 Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and he had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb. 23 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 24 Son of man, they that inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. 25 Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD: Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes unto your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land? 26 Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour’s wife: and shall ye possess the land? 27 Thus shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD: As I live, surely they that are in the waste places shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the strong holds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. 28 And I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment, and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. 29 Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed. 30 And as for thee, son of man, the children of thy people talk of thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, everyone to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. 31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do them not: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their gain. 32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. 33 And when this cometh to pass, (behold, it cometh,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.

1 A palavra do Senhor veio a mim, dizendo:

2 — Filho do homem, fale com os filhos de seu povo e diga-lhes: Quando eu fizer vir um exército inimigo sobre uma terra, se o povo dessa terra escolher um homem do meio deles e o constituir por seu atalaia, 3 e se, ao ver que o inimigo se aproxima, esse atalaia tocar a trombeta e avisar o povo, 4 então aquele que ouvir o som da trombeta e não se der por avisado, se o inimigo vier e o abater, esse será responsável pela sua própria morte. 5 Ele ouviu o som da trombeta e não se deu por avisado; será responsável por sua própria morte. Se ele tivesse dado atenção ao aviso, salvaria a sua vida. 6 Mas, se o atalaia vir que vem o inimigo e não tocar a trombeta, e o povo não for avisado, se o inimigo vier e abater um deles, este foi abatido na sua maldade, mas quem será responsável pela morte dele é o atalaia.

7 — Quanto a você, filho do homem, eu o constituí por atalaia sobre a casa de Israel. Portanto, você ouvirá a palavra da minha boca e lhes dará aviso da minha parte. 8 Se eu disser ao ímpio que ele certamente morrerá, e você não falar, para advertir o ímpio do seu mau caminho, esse ímpio morrerá na sua maldade, mas você será responsável pela morte dele. 9 Mas, se você falar ao ímpio, para o avisar do seu mau caminho, para que dele se converta, e ele não se converter do seu caminho, esse ímpio morrerá na sua maldade, mas você terá salvo a sua vida.

10 — Filho do homem, diga à casa de Israel: Vocês dizem: "Visto que as nossas transgressões e os nossos pecados estão sobre nós, e nós desfalecemos por causa deles, como poderemos viver?" 11 Diga-lhes: Tão certo como eu vivo, diz o Senhor Deus, não tenho prazer na morte do ímpio, mas em que o ímpio se converta do seu caminho e viva. Convertam-se! Convertam-se dos seus maus caminhos! Por que vocês haveriam de morrer, ó casa de Israel?

12 — Filho do homem, diga aos filhos do seu povo: A justiça do justo não o livrará no dia da sua transgressão. Quanto à maldade do ímpio, não cairá por ela, no dia em que se converter da sua maldade; nem o justo pela sua justiça poderá viver no dia em que pecar. 13 Quando eu disser ao justo que certamente viverá, e ele, confiando na sua justiça, fizer maldade, não me lembrarei de nenhum dos seus atos de justiça, e ele morrerá por causa da injustiça que cometeu. 14 E, quando eu disser ao ímpio que certamente morrerá, e ele se converter do seu pecado, fizer o que é justo e reto, 15 restituir o penhor, devolver o que roubou, andar nos estatutos da vida e não fizer maldade, certamente viverá; não morrerá. 16 De todos os pecados que cometeu, nenhum deles será lembrado contra ele. Fez o que é justo e reto; certamente viverá.

17 — No entanto, os filhos do seu povo dizem: "O caminho do Senhor não é reto." Mas é o caminho deles que não é reto. 18 Se o justo se desviar da sua justiça e fizer maldade, morrerá nela. 19 E, se o ímpio se converter da sua maldade e fizer o que é justo e reto, por causa desses atos viverá. 20 No entanto, vocês dizem: "O caminho do Senhor não é reto." Mas eu os julgarei, cada um segundo os seus caminhos, ó casa de Israel.

21 No décimo segundo ano do nosso exílio, aos cinco dias do décimo mês, veio a mim um sobrevivente de Jerusalém, dizendo: "A cidade caiu." 22 Ora, na tarde do dia anterior, antes da chegada desse sobrevivente, a mão do Senhor havia estado sobre mim e eu recuperei a fala. Assim, pela manhã, antes de chegar aquele homem, eu havia recuperado a fala, e não fiquei mais em silêncio.

23 Então a palavra do Senhor veio a mim, dizendo:

24 — Filho do homem, os moradores desses lugares desertos da terra de Israel estão dizendo: "Abraão era um só, mas possuiu esta terra. Ora, como nós somos muitos, certamente esta terra nos foi dada como propriedade."

25 — Por isso, diga-lhes: Assim diz o Senhor Deus: "Vocês comem carne com sangue, levantam os olhos para os seus ídolos, cometem assassinatos, e ainda pensam que hão de possuir a terra? 26 Vocês confiam em suas espadas, cometem abominações, cada um de vocês contamina a mulher do seu próximo, e ainda pensam que hão de possuir a terra?" 27 Diga-lhes que assim diz o Senhor Deus: "Tão certo como eu vivo, os que estiverem em lugares desertos cairão à espada, e o que estiver em campo aberto, eu o entregarei aos animais selvagens, para que o devorem, e os que estiverem em fortalezas e em cavernas morrerão de peste. 28 Tornarei a terra em desolação e espanto, e o orgulho do seu poder chegará ao fim. Os montes de Israel ficarão tão desolados, que ninguém passará por eles. 29 Então saberão que eu sou o Senhor, quando eu tornar a terra em desolação e espanto, por todas as abominações que cometeram."

30 — Quanto a você, filho do homem, os filhos do seu povo falam de você junto às paredes e nas portas das casas, dizendo um ao outro, cada um ao seu irmão: "Venham, vamos ouvir a palavra que procede do Senhor." 31 Eles vêm até você, como o povo costuma vir, assentam-se diante de você como meu povo e ouvem as suas palavras, mas não as põem em prática. Com a boca, professam muito amor, mas o coração deles só ambiciona lucro. 32 Para eles você não passa de alguém que canta canções de amor, tem uma bela voz e é um bom músico, porque ouvem as suas palavras, mas não as põem em prática. 33 Mas, quando isso vier — e certamente virá —, então saberão que um profeta esteve no meio deles.
