1 Então Jó respondeu:

2 "Ouçam com atenção

as minhas palavras;

seja esta a consolação

que vocês me trazem.

3 Tenham paciência, e eu falarei;

e, havendo eu falado,

poderão zombar de mim.

4 Será que é do homem

que eu me queixo?

Não tenho motivo

para ficar impaciente?

5 Olhem para mim

e fiquem pasmos,

e ponham a mão sobre a boca.

6 Porque só de pensar nisso

fico apavorado,

e sinto um calafrio

passar pelo meu corpo."

7 "Como é que os ímpios

continuam vivos,

envelhecem e ainda se tornam

mais poderosos?

8 Os seus filhos se estabelecem

na sua presença;

e os seus descendentes,

diante dos seus olhos.

9 As suas casas têm paz

e estão livres do medo;

e a vara de Deus não os fustiga.

10 Os seus touros geram

e não falham;

as suas novilhas têm a cria

e não abortam.

11 Deixam as suas crianças correr

como um rebanho;

os seus filhos saltam de alegria.

12 Cantam com tamborim e harpa

e alegram-se ao som da flauta.

13 Passam os seus dias

em prosperidade

e em paz descem à sepultura."

14 "E são estes os que se dirigem

a Deus, dizendo:

‘Deixa-nos em paz.

Não queremos conhecer

os teus caminhos.

15 Quem é o Todo-Poderoso,

para que o sirvamos?

E o que ganhamos,

se lhe fizermos orações?’

16 Vejam que não provém deles

a sua prosperidade.

Longe de mim

o conselho dos ímpios!"

17 "Quantas vezes se apaga

a lâmpada dos ímpios?

Quantas vezes lhes sobrevém

a destruição?

Quantas vezes Deus, na sua ira,

os faz sofrer?

18 Quantas vezes são como a palha

diante do vento

e como a poeira que é levada

pela tempestade?"

19 "Vocês dizem que Deus

reserva o castigo do perverso

para os filhos dele.

Mas é ao perverso que Deus

deveria punir,

para que o sinta.

20 Seus próprios olhos devem

ver a sua ruína;

que ele beba do furor

do Todo-Poderoso!

21 Porque depois de morto,

e acabada a contagem

dos seus meses,

que interessa a ele a sua casa?

22 Será que alguém pode

ensinar algo a Deus,

a ele que julga

os que estão nos céus?"

23 "Um morre em pleno vigor,

despreocupado e tranquilo,

24 com os seus baldes

cheios de leite

e os ossos repletos de tutano.

25 Outro, ao contrário,

morre com o coração

cheio de amargura,

não havendo provado o bem.

26 Juntamente jazem no pó,

onde os vermes os cobrem."

27 "Eis que eu conheço

os pensamentos de vocês

e os planos injustos que fazem

para me prejudicar.

28 Porque vocês perguntam:

‘Onde está agora

a casa do príncipe?’

E: ‘Onde ficou a tenda

em que moravam os ímpios?’"

29 "Será que vocês

nunca interrogaram

os que viajam?

E não levaram em conta

as suas declarações,

30 que o mau é poupado

no dia da calamidade,

e é socorrido no dia do furor?

31 Quem lhe jogará na cara

o que ele fez?

Quem o fará pagar pelo que fez?

32 Finalmente, é levado à sepultura,

e sobre o seu túmulo

se faz vigilância.

33 A terra do vale que o cobre

é leve;

todos os homens o seguem,

assim como são inumeráveis

os que foram adiante dele.

34 Como, então, vocês querem

me consolar

com palavras vazias?

Nas respostas de vocês

só há falsidade."

1 Then Job answered, and said,2 Hear diligently my speech, And let this be your consolations.3 Allow me, and I also will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.4 As for me, is my complaint to man? And why should I not be impatient?5 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.6 Even when I remember, I am troubled, and horror takes hold on my flesh.7 Why do the wicked live, become old, yea, grow mighty in power?8 Their seed is established with them in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes.9 Their houses are safe from fear, nor is the rod of God upon them.10 Their bull breeds, and does not fail. Their cow brings forth safely, and does not miscarry.11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe.13 They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol.14 And they say to God, Depart from us, for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray to him?16 Lo, [is] their prosperity not in their hand. (The counsel of the wicked is far from me.)17 How often is it that the lamp of the profane is put out, that their calamity comes upon them, that [God] distributes sorrows in his anger,18 that they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away?19 [Ye say], God lays up his iniquity for his sons. Let him recompense it to himself that he may know it.20 Let his own eyes see his destruction, and let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.21 For what does he care for his house after him when the number of his months is cut off?22 Shall any teach God knowledge, seeing he judges those who are high?23 One man dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.24 His pails are full of milk, and the marrow of his bones is moistened.25 And another man dies in bitterness of soul, and never tastes of good.26 They lie down alike in the dust, and the worm covers them.27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices with which ye would wrong me.28 For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?29 Have ye not asked wayfaring men? And do ye not know their evidences,30 that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? That they are led forth to the day of wrath?31 Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he has done?32 Yet he shall be borne to the grave, and men shall keep watch over the tomb.33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet to him. And all men shall draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.34 How then ye comfort me in vain, seeing in your answers there remains falsehood?
