1 Here is my servant, whom I have strengthened. Here is the one I have chosen, with whom I am pleased. I have filled him with my Spirit, and he will bring justice to every nation.2 He will not shout or raise his voice or make loud speeches in the streets.3 He will not break off a bent reed nor extinguish a flickering lamp. He will bring lasting justice to all.4 He will not lose hope or courage. He will establish justice on the earth. Distant lands eagerly wait for his law.5 God created the heavens and stretched them out. He fashioned the earth and all that lives there. He gave life and breath to all its people. And now Jehovah God says to his servant:6 »I, Jehovah, have called you and have given you power to see that justice is done on earth. I will make a covenant with all peoples and bring light truthlight of instruction (Psalm 27:1) to the nations through you.7 »You will open the eyes of the blind and set free those who sit in dark prisons.8 »I ALONE AM JEHOVAH. THAT IS MY NAME. I WILL NOT GIVE MY GLORY TO ANOTHER! I will not let idols share my praise.9 »The things I predicted have now come true. Now I will tell you of new things even before they begin to happen.«10 Sing a new song to Jehovah. Sing his praise, all the world! Praise him, you that sail the sea. Praise him, all creatures of the sea! Sing, distant lands and all who live there!11 Let the desert and its towns praise God. Let the people of Kedar praise him! Let those who live in the city of Sela shout for joy from the tops of the mountains!12 Let those who live in distant lands give praise and glory to Jehovah!13 Jehovah goes out to fight like a warrior. He is ready and eager for battle. He gives a war cry, a battle shout and he shows his power against his enemies.14 »I kept silent for a long time. I did not answer my people. The time to act has come. I cry out like a woman in labor.15 »I will destroy the hills and mountains and dry up the grass and trees. I will turn the river valleys into deserts and dry up the pools of water.16 »I will lead my blind people by roads they have never traveled. I will turn their darkness into light and make rough country smooth before them. I will keep my promises without fail.«17 Those who trust in idols and call images their gods will be humiliated and disgraced.18 Jehovah says: »Hear, you deaf people! Look closely, you who are blind!«19 Is anyone more blind than my servant or more deaf than the messenger I send?20 Israel, you have seen so much, but what has it meant to you? You have ears to hear with, but what have you really heard?21 Jehovah is a God who is eager to save. He exalted his laws and teachings, and he wanted his people to honor them.22 Now his people have been plundered. They are locked up in dungeons and hidden away in prisons. They were robbed and plundered, with no one to come to their rescue.23 Will any of you listen to this? From now on will you listen with care?24 Who gave Israel up to the looters? It was Jehovah, against whom we sinned! We would not live as he wanted us to live or obey the teachings he gave us.25 So he made us feel the force of his anger and suffer the violence of war. Like fire his anger burned throughout Israel. Yet we never knew what was happening. We learned nothing at all from it.

1 Eis aqui o meu servo, a quem sustenho; o meu escolhido, em quem se compraz a minha alma; pus o meu espírito sobre ele. ele trará justiça às nações.2 Não clamará, não se exaltará, nem fará ouvir a sua voz na rua.3 A cana trilhada, não a quebrará, nem apagará o pavio que fumega; em verdade trará a justiça;4 não faltará nem será quebrantado, até que ponha na terra a justiça; e as ilhas aguardarão a sua lei.5 Assim diz Deus, o Senhor, que criou os céus e os desenrolou, e estendeu a terra e o que dela procede; que dá a respiração ao povo que nela está, e o espírito aos que andam nela.6 Eu o Senhor te chamei em justiça; tomei-te pela mão, e te guardei; e te dei por pacto ao povo, e para luz das nações;7 para abrir os olhos dos cegos, para tirar da prisão os presos, e do cárcere os que jazem em trevas.8 Eu sou o Senhor; este é o meu nome; a minha glória, pois, a outrem não a darei, nem o meu louvor às imagens esculpidas.9 Eis que as primeiras coisas já se realizaram, e novas coisas eu vos anuncio; antes que venham à luz, vo-las faço ouvir.10 Cantai ao Senhor um cântico novo, e o seu louvor desde a extremidade da terra, vós, os que navegais pelo mar, e tudo quanto há nele, vós ilhas, e os vossos habitantes.11 Alcem a voz o deserto e as suas cidades, com as aldeias que Quedar habita; exultem os que habitam nos penhascos, e clamem do cume dos montes.12 Dêem glória ao Senhor, e anunciem nas ilhas o seu louvor.13 O Senhor sai como um valente, como homem de guerra desperta o zelo; clamará, e fará grande ruído, e mostrar-se-á valente contra os seus inimigos.14 Por muito tempo me calei; estive em silêncio, e me contive; mas agora darei gritos como a que está de parto, arfando e arquejando.15 Os montes e outeiros tornarei em deserto, e toda a sua erva farei secar; e tornarei os rios em ilhas, e secarei as lagoas.16 E guiarei os cegos por um caminho que não conhecem; fá-los-ei caminhar por veredas que não têm conhecido; tornarei as trevas em luz perante eles, e aplanados os caminhos escabrosos. Estas coisas lhes farei; e não os desampararei.17 Tornados para trás e cobertos de vergonha serão os que confiam em imagens esculpidas, que dizem às imagens de fundição: Vós sois nossos deuses.18 Surdos, ouvi; e vós, cegos, olhai, para que possais ver.19 Quem é cego, senão o meu servo, ou surdo como o meu mensageiro, que envio? e quem é cego como o meu dedicado, e cego como o servo do Senhor?20 Tu vês muitas coisas, mas não as guardas; ainda que ele tenha os ouvidos abertos, nada ouve.21 Foi do agrado do Senhor, por amor da sua justiça, engrandecer a lei e torná-la gloriosa.22 Mas este é um povo roubado e saqueado; todos estão enlaçados em cavernas, e escondidos nas casas dos cárceres; são postos por presa, e ninguém há que os livre; por despojo, e ninguém diz: Restitui.23 Quem há entre vós que a isso dará ouvidos? que atenderá e ouvirá doravante?24 Quem entregou Jacó por despojo, e Israel aos roubadores? porventura não foi o Senhor, aquele contra quem pecamos, e em cujos caminhos eles não queriam andar, e cuja lei não queriam observar?25 Pelo que o Senhor derramou sobre Israel a indignação da sua ira, e a violência da guerra; isso lhe ateou fogo ao redor; contudo ele não o percebeu; e o queimou; contudo ele não se compenetrou disso.
