1 Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah about all the people of Judah when Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, was in his fourth year as king. This was the first year that Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon.2 The prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah and to everyone who lived in Jerusalem. He said:3 »Jehovah continued to speak his word to me for twenty-three years. This covered the time from when Josiah, son of Amon, was in his thirteenth year as king of Judah until today. I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened.4 »Jehovah has sent all his servants the prophets to you. Yet, you have not listened or paid attention to them.«5 The prophets said: »Turn from your evil ways and the evil you have done, and live in the land that Jehovah permanently gave to you and your ancestors.6 »Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them. Do not make me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. Then I will not harm you.«7 »‘You have not listened to me,’ declares Jehovah. ‘You have made me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. You have brought harm upon yourselves.’8 »This is what Jehovah of Hosts says: ‘»You did not listen to my words,9 so I am going to send for all the families from the north. I will also send for my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,« says Jehovah. »I will bring the families from the north to attack this land, its people, and all these surrounding nations. I am going to destroy them and turn them into something terrible, something ridiculed, and something permanently ruined.10 »I will take from them the sounds of joy and happiness, the sounds of brides and grooms, the sound of mills, and the light of lamps.11 »This whole land will be ruined and become a wasteland. These nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years.« ’12 »‘When the seventy years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their crimes,’ declares Jehovah. ‘I will turn Babylon into a permanent wasteland.13 »‘I will bring on that land all the disasters I threatened to do to it, everything that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations, everything written in this book.14 »‘Many nations and great kings will make slaves of the people of Babylon. I will pay them back for what they have done.’«15 »This is what Jehovah the God of Israel said to me: ‘Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my fury, and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink from it.16 »‘When they drink from it, they will stagger and go insane because of the wars that I am going to send them.’«17 So I took the cup from Jehovah’s hand. I made all the nations to whom Jehovah sent me drink from it.18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah as well as its kings and officials drank from it. When they drank from it, they became wastelands and ruins, something ridiculed and cursed, until today.19 I also made these people drink from it: Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, officials, all his people,20 and all the foreign people living among them; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of Philistia, those from the cities of Ashkelon, Gaza, and Ekron, and the people left in Ashdod;21 Edom, Moab, and the people of Ammon;22 all the kings of Tyre and Sidon, and the kings on the seacoast;23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who shave the hair on their foreheads;24 all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the foreign people living in the desert;25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;26 all the kings of the north, near and far, one after another-all the kingdoms of the earth. Last of all, the king of Sheshach will drink from the cup.27 »Jehovah said: ‘Say to them, This is what Jehovah of Hosts, »the God of Israel, says: ‘Drink, get drunk, vomit, fall down, and do not get up because of the wars that I am going to send you.« ’28 »‘If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink from it, say to them: ‘This is what Jehovah of Hosts says: »You must drink from it!29 »‘I am going to bring disaster on the city that is named after me. Do you think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished! I am declaring war on all those who live on earth,’ declares Jehovah of Hosts.30 »That is why you will prophecy all these things to them and say: Jehovah roars from above. He thunders from his holy dwelling place. He roars against his land. He shouts like those who stomp grapes. He shouts against all those who live on earth.31 »‘The sound is echoing to the ends of the earth because Jehovah has brought charges against the nations. He will judge all humans. He will kill the wicked,’ declares Jehovah.32 »This is what Jehovah of Hosts says: ‘Disaster is spreading from nation to nation. A great storm is brewing from the distant corners of the earth.33 »‘On that day those killed by Jehovah will stretch from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, taken away, or buried. They will become like manure on the ground.’34 »Mourn, you shepherds, and cry. Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. The time has come for you to be slaughtered. The time has come for you to be scattered, and you will break like fine pottery.35 »There will be no place for the shepherds to flee, no escape for the leaders of the flock.36 »The shepherds are crying and the leaders of the flock are mourning because Jehovah is stripping their pasture.37 »The peaceful pastures are destroyed by Jehovah’s burning anger.38 »He has left his lair like a lion. Their land has been ruined because of the heat of the oppressor, because of the fury of his anger.«

1 A palavra que veio a Jeremias acerca de todo o povo de Judá, no ano quarto de Jeoiaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá {que era o primeiro ano de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia,}2 a qual anunciou o profeta Jeremias a todo o povo de Judá, e a todos os habitantes de Jerusalém, dizendo:3 Desde o ano treze de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, até o dia de hoje, período de vinte e três anos, tem vindo a mim a palavra do Senhor, e vo-la tenho anunciado, falando-vos insistentemente; mas vós não tendes escutado.4 Também o Senhor vos tem enviado com insistência todos os seus servos, os profetas mas vós não escutastes, nem inclinastes os vossos ouvidos para ouvir,5 quando vos diziam: Convertei-vos agora cada um do seu mau caminho, e da maldade das suas ações, e habitai na terra que o Senhor vos deu e a vossos pais, desde os tempos antigos e para sempre;6 e não andeis após deuses alheios para os servirdes, e para os adorardes, nem me provoqueis à ira com a obra de vossas mãos; e não vos farei mal algum.7 Todavia não me escutastes, diz o Senhor, mas me provocastes à ira com a obra de vossas mãos, para vosso mal.8 Portanto assim diz o Senhor dos exércitos: Visto que não escutastes as minhas palavras9 eis que eu enviarei, e tomarei a todas as famílias do Norte, diz o Senhor, como também a Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, meu servo, e os trarei sobre esta terra, e sobre os seus moradores, e sobre todas estas nações em redor. e os destruirei totalmente, e farei que sejam objeto de espanto, e de assobio, e de perpétuo opróbrio.10 E farei cessar dentre eles a voz de gozo e a voz de alegria, a voz do noivo e a voz da noiva, o som das mós e a luz do candeeiro.11 E toda esta terra virá a ser uma desolação e um espanto; e estas nações servirão ao rei de Babilônia setenta anos.12 Acontecerá, porém, que quando se cumprirem os setenta anos, castigarei o rei de Babilônia, e esta nação, diz o Senhor, castigando a sua iniqüidade, e a terra dos caldeus; farei dela uma desolação perpetua.13 E trarei sobre aquela terra todas as minhas palavras, que tenho proferido contra ela, tudo quanto está escrito neste livro, que profetizou Jeremias contra todas as nações.14 Porque deles, sim, deles mesmos muitas nações e grandes reis farão escravos; assim lhes retribuirei segundo os seus feitos, e segundo as obras das suas mãos.15 Pois assim me disse o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: Toma da minha mão este cálice do vinho de furor, e faze que dele bebam todas as nações, às quais eu te enviar.16 Beberão, e cambalearão, e enlouquecerão, por causa da espada, que eu enviarei entre eles.17 Então tomei o cálice da mão do Senhor, e fiz que bebessem todas as nações, às quais o Senhor me enviou:18 a Jerusalém, e às cidades de Judá, e aos seus reis, e aos seus príncipes, para fazer deles uma desolação, um espanto, um assobio e uma maldição, como hoje se vê;19 a Faraó, rei do Egito, e a seus servos, e a seus príncipes, e a todo o seu povo;20 e a todo o povo misto, e a todos os reis da terra de Uz, e a todos os reis da terra dos filisteus, a Asquelom, a Gaza, a Ecrom, e ao que resta de Asdode;21 e a Edom, a Moabe, e aos filhos de Amom;22 e a todos os reis de Tiro, e a todos os reis de Sidom, e aos reis das terras dalém do mar;23 a Dedã, a Tema, a Buz e a todos os que habitam nos últimos cantos da terra;24 a todos os reis da Arábia, e a todos os reis do povo misto que habita no deserto;25 a todos os reis de Zinri, a todos os reis de Elão, e a todos os reis da Média;26 a todos os reis do Norte, os de perto e os de longe, tanto um como o outro, e a todos os reinos da terra, que estão sobre a face da terra; e o rei de Sesaque beberá depois deles.27 Pois lhes dirás: Assim diz o Senhor dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Bebei, e embebedai-vos, e vomitai, e caí, e não torneis a levantar, por causa da espada que eu vos enviarei.28 Se recusarem tomar o copo da tua mão para beber, então lhes dirás: Assim diz o Senhor dos exércitos: Certamente bebereis.29 Pois eis que sobre a cidade que se chama pelo meu nome, eu começo a trazer a calamidade; e haveis vós de ficar totalmente impunes? Não ficareis impunes; porque eu chamo a espada sobre todos os moradores da terra, diz o Senhor dos exércitos.30 Tu pois lhes profetizarás todas estas palavras, e lhes dirás: O Senhor desde o alto bramirá, e fará ouvir a sua voz desde a sua santa morada; bramirá fortemente contra a sua habitação; dará brados, como os que pisam as uvas, contra todos os moradores da terra.31 Chegará o estrondo até a extremidade da terra, porque o Senhor tem contenda com as nações, entrará em juízo com toda a carne; quanto aos ímpios, ele os entregará a espada, diz o Senhor.32 Assim diz o Senhor dos exércitos: Eis que o mal passa de nação para nação, e grande tempestade se levantará dos confins da terra.33 E os mortos do Senhor naquele dia se encontrarão desde uma extremidade da terra até a outra; não serão pranteados, nem recolhidos, nem sepultados; mas serão como esterco sobre a superfície da terra.34 Uivai, pastores, e clamai; e revolvei-vos na cinza, vós que sois os principais do rebanho; pois já se cumpriram os vossos dias para serdes mortos, e eu vos despedaçarei, e vós então caireis como carneiros escolhidos.35 E não haverá refúgio para os pastores, nem lugar para onde escaparem os principais do rebanho.36 Eis a voz de grito dos pastores, o uivo dos principais do rebanho; porque o Senhor está devastando o pasto deles.37 E as suas malhadas pacíficas são reduzidas a silêncio, por causa do furor da ira do Senhor.38 Deixou como leão o seu covil; porque a sua terra se tornou em desolação, por causa do furor do opressor, e por causa do furor da sua ira.
