1 Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his entire army, and all the kingdoms and people that he ruled were attacking Jerusalem and all its cities. This is what he said:2 »This is what Jehovah the God of Israel says: ‘Go to King Zedekiah of Judah, and tell him, Jehovah says: »I am going to hand this city over to the king of Babylon. He will burn it down.3 »You will not escape from him. You will certainly be captured and handed over to him. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will talk to you face to face. Then you will go to Babylon.4 »Listen to the word of Jehovah, King Zedekiah of Judah. This is what Jehovah says about you: ‘You will not die in war.5 ‘You will die peacefully. People will burn funeral fires for you as they did for your ancestors, the kings who lived before you.’ They will say: »Oh, master, as they mourn for you. I have spoken my word, declares Jehovah.« ’« ’«6 The prophet Jeremiah told all these things to King Zedekiah of Judah in Jerusalem.7 He did this when the army of the king of Babylon was attacking Jerusalem and the cities of Lachish and Azekah. These were the only fortified cities of Judah that were left.8 Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah after King Zedekiah and all the people in Jerusalem promised to free their slaves.9 Everyone was supposed to free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female. No one was supposed to keep another Jew as a slave.10 All the officials and all the people agreed and promised to free their male and female slaves and not to keep them as slaves anymore. So they set them free.11 Later they changed their minds and took back the men and women they had freed and made them their slaves again.12 Jehovah continued to speak his word to Jeremiah:13 »This is what Jehovah the God of Israel says: ‘I put a condition on the covenant I made to your ancestors when I brought them from Egypt, where they were slaves. I said:14 »Every seven years each of you must free any Hebrews who sold themselves to you. When they have served you for six years, you must set them free. But your ancestors refused to obey me or listen to me.15 »You changed and did what I consider right. You agreed to free your neighbors, and you made a covenant in my presence, in the Temple that is called by my name.16 »Now you have changed again and dishonored me. You brought back the male and females slaves that you had set free to live their own lives. You have forced them to be your male and female slaves again.’17 »This is what Jehovah says: ‘You did not obey me. You have not freed your relatives and neighbors. Now I am going to free you,’ declares Jehovah. ‘I will free you to die in wars, plagues, and famines. I will make all the kingdoms of the world horrified at the thought of you.18 I will hand over the people who have rejected my covenant. They have not kept the terms of the covenant they made in my presence when they cut a calf in two and passed between its pieces.19 I will hand over the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the palace officials, the priests, and all the common people who passed between the pieces of the calf.20 I will hand them over to their enemies who want to kill them. Their corpses will be food for birds and wild animals.21 I will hand King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials over to their enemies who want to kill them and to the army of the king of Babylon, the army that has withdrawn from you.’22 »‘I am going to give a command,’ declares Jehovah. ‘I will bring that army back to this city to attack it, capture it, and burn it down. I will destroy the cities of Judah so that no one will live there.’«

1 A palavra que da parte do Senhor veio a Jeremias, quando Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, e todo o seu exército, e todos os reinos da terra que estavam sob o domínio da sua mão, e todos os povos, pelejavam contra Jerusalém, e contra todas as suas cidades, dizendo:2 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Vai, e fala a Zedequias, rei de Judá, e dize-lhe: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que estou prestes a entregar esta cidade na mão do rei de Babilônia, o qual a queimará a fogo.3 E tu não escaparás da sua mão; mas certamente serás preso e entregue na sua mão; e teus olhos verão os olhos do rei de Babilônia, e ele te falará boca a boca, e irás a Babilônia.4 Todavia ouve a palavra do Senhor, ó Zedequias, rei de Judá; assim diz o Senhor acerca de ti: Não morrerás à espada;5 em paz morrerás, e como queimavam perfumes a teus pais, os reis precedentes, que foram antes de ti, assim tos queimarão a ti; e te prantearão, dizendo: Ah Senhor! Pois eu disse a palavra, diz o Senhor.6 E anunciou Jeremias, o profeta, a Zedequias, rei de Judá, todas estas palavras, em Jerusalém,7 quando o exército do rei de Babilônia pelejava contra Jerusalém, e contra todas as cidades de Judá, que ficaram de resto, contra Laquis e contra Azeca; porque dentre as cidades de Judá, só estas haviam ficado como cidades fortificadas.8 A palavra que da parte do Senhor veio a Jeremias, depois que o rei Zedequias fez um pacto com todo o povo que estava em Jerusalém, para lhe fazer proclamação de liberdade,9 para que cada um libertasse o seu escravo, e cada um a sua escrava, hebreu ou hebréia, de maneira que ninguém se servisse mais dos judeus, seus irmãos, como escravos.10 E obedeceram todos os príncipes e todo o povo que haviam entrado no pacto de libertarem cada qual o seu escravo, e cada qual a sua escrava, de maneira a não se servirem mais deles, sim, obedeceram e os libertaram.11 Mas depois se arrependeram, e fizeram voltar os escravos e as escravas que haviam libertado, e tornaram a escravizá-los.12 Veio, pois, a palavra do Senhor a Jeremias, da parte do Senhor, dizendo:13 Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Eu fiz um pacto com vossos pais, no dia em que os tirei da terra do Egito, da casa da servidão, dizendo:14 Ao fim de sete anos libertareis cada um a seu irmão hebreu, que te for vendido, e te houver servido seis anos, e despedi-lo-ás livre de ti; mas vossos pais não me ouviram, nem inclinaram os seus ouvidos.15 E vos havíeis hoje arrependido, e tínheis feito o que é reto aos meus olhos, proclamando liberdade cada um ao seu próximo; e tínheis feito diante de mim um pacto, na casa que se chama pelo meu nome;16 mudastes, porém, e profanastes o meu nome, e fizestes voltar cada um o seu escravo, e cada um a sua escrava, que havíeis deixado ir livres à vontade deles; e os sujeitastes de novo à servidão.17 Portanto assim diz o Senhor: Vós não me ouvistes a mim, para proclamardes a liberdade, cada um ao seu irmão, e cada um ao seu próximo. Eis, pois, que eu vos proclamo a liberdade, diz o Senhor, para a espada, para a peste e para a fome; e farei que sejais um espetáculo de terror a todos os reinos da terra.18 Entregarei os homens que traspassaram o meu pacto, e não cumpriram as palavras do pacto que fizeram diante de mim com o bezerro que dividiram em duas partes, passando pelo meio das duas porções.19 Os príncipes de Judá, os príncipes de Jerusalém, os eunucos, os sacerdotes, e todo o povo da terra, os mesmos que passaram pelo meio das porções do bezerro,20 entregá-los-ei, digo, na mão de seus inimigos, e na mão dos que procuram a sua morte. Os cadáveres deles servirão de pasto para as aves do céu e para os animais da terra.21 E a Zedequias, rei de Judá, e seus príncipes entregarei na mão de seus inimigos e na mão dos que procuram a sua morte, e na mão do exército do rei de Babilônia, os quais já se retiraram de vós.22 Eis que eu darei ordem, diz o Senhor, e os farei tornar a esta cidade, e pelejarão contra ela, e a tomarão, e a queimarão a fogo; e das cidades de Judá farei uma assolação, de sorte que ninguém habite nelas.
