1 This is what the Lord Jehovah said about MOAB: »Pity the people of Nebo. Their town is destroyed! Kiriathaim is captured, its mighty fortress torn down, and its people put to shame.2 »The splendor of Moab is gone. The enemy has captured Heshbon and plot to destroy the nation of Moab. The town of Madmen will be silenced. Armies will march against it.3 »The people of Horonaim cry out: »Violence! Destruction!«4 Moab has been destroyed! Listen to the children crying.5 Hear the sound of their sobs along the road up to Luhith, the cries of distress on the way down to Horonaim.6 »Quick, run for your lives!« They say. »Run like a wild desert donkey!«7 Moab, you trusted in your strength and your wealth, but now even you will be conquered. Your god Chemosh will go into exile, along with his princes and priests.8 Not a town will escape the destruction. Both valley and plain will be ruined. I Jehovah have spoken.9 »Set up a tombstone for Moab. It will soon be destroyed. Its towns will be left in ruins, and no one will live there again.10 »Curse those who do not do Jehovah’s work with all their heart! Curse those who do not slash and kill!11 Jehovah said: »Moab has always lived secure and has never been taken into exile. Moab is like wine left to settle undisturbed and never poured from jar to jar. Its flavor has never been ruined, and it tastes as good as ever.12 »‘So now, the time is coming when I will send people to pour Moab out like wine. They will empty its wine jars and break them in pieces.13 »Then the Moabites will be disillusioned with their god Chemosh. The same as the Israelites were disillusioned with Bethel, their trusted god.14 »‘Men of Moab, why do you claim to be heroes, brave soldiers tested in war?’«15 »‘Moab and its cities are destroyed. Its finest young men have been slaughtered. ‘I am the king, the Lord Jehovah, and I have spoken!16 »Moab's doom approaches. Its ruin is coming soon.17 »Mourn for that nation, you that live nearby, all of you that know its fame. Say: ‘Its powerful rule has been broken. Its glory and might are no more.’18 »You that live in Dibon come down from your place of honor and sit on the ground in the dust. Moab's destroyer is here and has left its forts in ruins.19 »You that live in Aroer stand by the road and wait. Ask those who are running away, say, ‘What has happened?’20 »Moab has fallen, they will answer; weep for it because it is disgraced. Announce along the Arnon River that Moab is destroyed!21 »Judgment has come on the cities of the plateau: on Holon, Jahzah, Mephaath,22 »Dibon, Nebo, Beth Diblathaim,23 »Kiriathaim, Bethgamul, Bethmeon,24 »Kerioth, and Bozrah. Judgment has come on all the cities of Moab, far and near.25 »‘Moab's might has been crushed. Its power has been destroyed. I Jehovah have spoken.26 »‘Jehovah said: ‘Make Moab drunk, because it has rebelled against me. Moab will roll in its own vomit and people will laugh.27 »‘Moab, remember how you made fun of the people of Israel? You treated them as though they had been caught with a gang of robbers.28 »‘You people who live in Moab, leave your towns! Go and live on the cliffs! Be like the dove that makes its nest in the sides of a ravine.’«29 »Moab is very proud! I have heard how proud, arrogant, and conceited the people are, how much they think of themselves.«30 »‘Jehovah says: ‘I know Moab’s great pride, but it is of no use. Moab’s bragging gains nothing.31 »‘I cry with sadness for Moab, yes for everyone in Moab. I moan for the people from the town of Kir-Hareseth.32 »‘I weep with the people of the town of Jazer. And what of the grapevines of the town of Sibmah? In the past your vines spread all the way to the sea, as far as the sea of Jazer. But the destroyer has taken over your fruit and grapes.33 « ‘Joy and gladness are taken from the fruitful orchards and fields and from the land of Moab. I have stopped the flow of wine from the wine presses. No one walks on the grapes with shouts of joy. There are shouts, but they are not shouts of joy.34 »‘Their crying can be heard from Moabite towns. It can be heard from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz, from Zoar as far away as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah three year old heifer. Even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.35 »‘I will stop Moab from making burnt offerings at the places of worship. I will stop Moab from burning incense to their gods, says Jehovah.36 »‘My heart cries sadly for Moab like a flute playing a funeral song. It cries like a flute for the people from Kir Hareseth. The money they made has all been taken away.37 »‘They have all shaved their heads and cut off their beards. They have all made gashes on their hands, and everyone is wearing sackcloth.’«38 »‘People are weeping on every roof in Moab and in every public square. There is only sadness, because I have broken Moab like a jar no one wants,’ say Jehovah.39 ‘Moab has been shattered! Cry out! Moab has been disgraced. It is in ruins and all the surrounding nations make fun of it.’ I Jehovah have spoken.40 »This is what Jehovah says: ‘Look! Someone is coming like an eagle diving down from the sky and spreading its wings over Moab.41 »The towns of Moab will be captured. The strong walled cities will be defeated. Then Moab’s warriors will be frightened like a woman who is giving birth.’«42 »‘The nation of Moab will be destroyed. This is because they thought they were greater than Jehovah.43 »‘Fear, deep pits, and traps wait for you people of Moab,’ says Jehovah.44 »‘People will run out of fear, but they will fall into the pits. Those who climb out of the pits will be caught in the traps.’ »I will bring the year of punishment to Moab,« says Jehovah.45 ‘Helpless people have run to find protection in Heshbon, the city that King Sihon once ruled, but it is in flames. It has burned up leaders of Moab and destroyed those proud people.’46 »‘Pity the people of Moab! The people who worshiped Chemosh have been destroyed. Their sons and daughters have been taken away as prisoners.47 »‘In the future, however, I will make good things happen to Moab. It will be prosperous again,’ says Jehovah. As of now the judgement of Moab.’«

1 Acerca de Moabe. Assim diz o Senhor dos exércitos, Deus de Israel: Ai de Nebo, porque foi destruída; envergonhada está Quiriataim, já é tomada; Misgabe está envergonhada e espantada.2 O louvor de Moabe já não existe mais; em Hesbom projetaram mal contra ela, dizendo: Vinde, e exterminemo-la, para que não mais seja nação; também tu, ó Madmém, serás destruída; a espada te perseguirá.3 Voz de grito de Horonaim, ruína e grande destruição!4 Está destruído Moabe; seus filhinhos fizeram ouvir um clamor.5 Pois pela subida de Luíte eles vão subindo com choro contínuo; porque na descida de Horonaim, ouviram a angústia do grito da destruição.6 Fugi, salvai a vossa vida! Sede como o asno selvagem no deserto.7 Pois, porquanto confiaste nas tuas obras e nos teus tesouros, também tu serás tomada; e Quemós sairá para o cativeiro, os seus sacerdotes e os seus príncipes juntamente.8 Porque virá o destruidor sobre cada uma das cidades e nenhuma escapará, e perecerá o vale, e destruir-se-á a planície, como disse o Senhor.9 Dai asas a Moabe, porque voando sairá; e as suas cidades se tornarão em desolação, sem habitante.10 Maldito aquele que fizer a obra do Senhor negligentemente, e maldito aquele que vedar do sangue a sua espada!11 Moabe tem estado sossegado desde a sua mocidade, e tem repousado como vinho sobre as fezes; não foi deitado de vasilha em vasilha, nem foi para o cativeiro; por isso permanece nele o seu sabor, e o seu cheiro não se altera.12 Portanto, eis que os dias vêm, diz o Senhor, em que lhe enviarei derramadores que o derramarão; e despejarão as suas vasilhas, e despedaçarão os seus jarros.13 E Moabe terá vergonha de Quemós, como se envergonhou a casa de Israel de Betel, sua confiança.14 Como direis: Somos valentes e homens fortes para a guerra?15 Já subiu o destruidor de Moabe e das suas cidades, e os seus mancebos escolhidos desceram à matança, diz o Rei, cujo nome é o Senhor dos exércitos.16 A calamidade de Moabe está perto e muito se apressa o seu mal.17 Condoei-vos dele todos os que estais em seu redor, e todos os que sabeis o seu nome; dizei: Como se quebrou a vara forte, o cajado formoso!18 Desce da tua glória, e senta-te no pó, ó moradora, filha de Dibom; porque o destruidor de Moabe subiu contra ti, e desfez as tuas fortalezas.19 Põe-te junto ao caminho, e espia, ó moradora do Aroer; pergunta ao que foge, e à que escapa: Que sucedeu?20 Moabe está envergonhado, porque foi quebrantado; uivai e gritai; anunciai em Arnom que Moabe está destruído.21 Também o julgamento é vindo sobre a terra da planície; sobre Holom, Jaza, e Mefaate;22 sobre Dibom, Nebo, e Bete-Diblataim;23 sobre Quiriataim, Bete-Gamul, e BeteMeom;24 sobre Queriote, e Bozra, e todas as cidades da terra de Moabe, as de longe e as de perto.25 Está cortado o poder de Moabe, e quebrantado o seu braço, diz o senhor.26 Embriagai-o, porque contra o Senhor se engrandeceu; e Moabe se revolverá no seu vômito, e ele também se tornará objeto de escárnio.27 Pois não se tornou também Israel objeto de escárnio para ti? Porventura foi achado entre ladrões para que, sempre que falas dele, meneies a cabeça?28 Deixai as cidades, e habitai no rochedo, ó moradores de Moabe; e sede como a pomba que se aninha nos lados da boca da caverna.29 Temos ouvido da soberba de Moabe, que é soberbíssimo; da sua sobrançaria, do seu orgulho, da sua arrogância, e da altivez do seu coração.30 Eu conheço, diz o Senhor, a sua insolência, mas isso nada é; as suas jactâncias nada têm efetuado.31 Por isso uivarei por Moabe; sim, gritarei por todo o Moabe; pelos homens de Quir-Heres lamentarei.32 Com choro maior do que o de Jazer chorar-te-ei, ó vide de Sibma; os teus ramos passaram o mar, chegaram até o mar de Jazer; mas o destruidor caiu sobre os teus frutos de verão, e sobre a tua vindima.33 Tirou-se, pois, a alegria e o regozijo do campo fértil e da terra de Moabe; e fiz que o vinho cessasse dos lagares; já não pisam uvas com júbilo; o brado não é o de júbilo34 O grito de Hesbom e Eleale se ouve até Jaza; fazem ouvir a sua voz desde Zoar até Horonaim, e até Eglate-Selíssia; pois também as águas do Ninrim virão a ser uma desolação.35 Demais, farei desaparecer de Moabe, diz o Senhor, aquele que sacrifica nos altos, e queima incenso a seus deuses.36 Por isso geme como flauta o meu coração por Moabe, e como flauta geme o meu coração pelos homens de Quir-Heres; porquanto a abundância que ajuntou se perdeu.37 Pois toda cabeça é tosquiada, e toda barba rapada; sobre todas as mãos há sarjaduras, e sobre os lombos sacos.38 Sobre todos os eirados de Moabe e nas suas ruas há um pranto geral; porque quebrei a Moabe, como a um vaso que não agrada, diz o Senhor.39 Como está quebrantrado! como uivam! como virou Moabe as costas envergonhado! assim se tornou Moabe objeto de escárnio e de espanto para todos os que estão em redor dele.40 Pois assim diz o Senhor: Eis que alguém voará como a águia, e estenderá as suas asas contra Moabe.41 Tomadas serão as cidades, e ocupadas as fortalezas; e naquele dia será o coração dos valentes de Moabe como o coração da mulher em suas dores de parto.42 E Moabe será destruído, para que não seja povo, porque se engrandeceu contra o Senhor.43 Temor, e cova, e laço estão sobre ti, ó morador de Moabe, diz o Senhor.44 O que fugir do temor cairá na cova, e o que sair da cova ficará preso no laço; pois trarei sobre ele, sobre Moabe, o ano do seu castigo, diz o Senhor.45 Os que fugiram ficam parados sem forças à sombra de Hesbom; mas fogo saiu de Hesbom, e a labareda do meio de Siom, e devorou a fronte de Moabe e o alto da cabeça dos turbulentos.46 Ai de ti, Moabe! pereceu o povo de Quemós; pois teus filhos foram levados cativos, e tuas filhas para o cativeiro.47 Contudo nos últimos dias restaurarei do cativeiro a Moabe, diz o Senhor. Até aqui o juizo de Moabe.
