1 In the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of King Josiah of Judah, Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah:2 »Take a scroll, and write on it everything that I have dictated to you about Israel, Judah, and all the other nations from the time I spoke to you during the reign of Josiah until today.3 »Maybe the nation of Judah will hear about all the disasters that I devise to bring on them, and they will turn from their wicked ways. Then I will forgive their wickedness and their sins.«4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch, son of Neriah. Jeremiah dictated everything that Jehovah told him. Baruch wrote it all down on a scroll.5 Jeremiah told Baruch: »I am no longer allowed to go to Jehovah’s Temple.6 »On a day of fasting, you must read from the scroll Jehovah’s message that you wrote as I dictated. You must read it to the people in Jehovah’s Temple. You must also read it to all the people of Judah when they come from their cities.7 »Maybe their prayers will come into Jehovah’s presence, and they will turn from their evil ways. Jehovah has threatened these people with his terrifying anger and fury.«8 Baruch, son of Neriah, did as the prophet Jeremiah commanded him. In Jehovah’s Temple he read from the scroll everything that Jehovah had said.9 In the ninth month of the fifth year of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of King Josiah of Judah, a time for fasting was called. It was a time for all the people in Jerusalem and for everyone who was coming from any city in Judah to Jerusalem to fast in Jehovah’s presence.10 Then Baruch read the scroll containing the words of Jeremiah. Baruch read it to all the people in Jehovah’s temple in the room of the scribe Gemariah, son of Shaphan, in the upper courtyard at the entrance of New Gate of Jehovah’s Temple.11 Micaiah, who was the son of Gemariah and the grandson of Shaphan, heard Baruch read from the scroll everything Jehovah had said.12 Then he went down to the scribe's room in the king's palace where all the scribes were sitting. The scribe Elishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials were there.13 Micaiah told them everything he heard Baruch read from the scroll publicly.14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi, who was the son of Nethaniah, the grandson of Shelemiah, and the great-grandson of Cushi, to Baruch. Jehudi said to Baruch: »Bring the scroll that you read publicly, and come with me.« Baruch, son of Neriah, took the scroll and went with him to see the officers.15 They said to Baruch: »Please sit down, and read it to us.« So Baruch read it to them.16 When they heard everything, they turned to each other in terror. They said to Baruch: »We must tell the king everything.«17 They asked Baruch: »Please tell us how you wrote all this. Did Jeremiah dictate it to you?«18 Baruch answered: »He dictated everything to me, and I wrote it on the scroll in ink.«19 The officials said to Baruch: »You and Jeremiah must hide. Do not let anyone know where you are.«20 After they put the scroll in the side room of the scribe Elishama, they went to the king in the courtyard and told him everything.21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. He took the scroll from the side room of the scribe Elishama. Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials standing by the king.22 It was the ninth month, and the king was in his winter house sitting in front of the fire in the fireplace.23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a scribe's knife and throw them into the fire in the fireplace. He did this until the whole scroll was burned up.24 The king and all his attendants did not show any fear or tear their clothes in fear when they heard everything being read.25 Even when Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he refused to listen to them.26 The king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel to arrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But Jehovah had hidden Baruch and Jeremiah.27 After the king burned up the scroll that Baruch had written and that Jeremiah had dictated, Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah:28 »Take another scroll, and write on it everything that was written on the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah burned.29 »Say about King Jehoiakim of Judah: ‘This is what Jehovah says: You burned this scroll, and you asked Jeremiah: »Why did you write that the king of Babylon would certainly come to destroy this land and take away people and animals?« ’«30 »‘This is what Jehovah says about King Jehoiakim of Judah: ‘He will have no one to sit on David's throne, and his own corpse will be thrown out and exposed to the heat of day and the cold of night.31 ‘»‘»I will punish him, his descendants, and his attendants for their wickedness. They refused to listen. So I will bring on them, on those who live in Jerusalem, and on the people of Judah all the disasters that I have threatened.’« ’«32 Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch, son of Neriah. As Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it everything that was on the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned. They added many similar messages.

1 Sucedeu pois no ano quarto de Jeoiaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, que da parte do Senhor veio esta palavra a Jeremias, dizendo:2 Toma o rolo dum livro, e escreve nele todas as palavras que te hei falado contra Israel, contra Judá e contra todas as nações, desde o dia em que eu te falei, desde os dias de Josias até o dia de hoje.3 Ouvirão talvez os da casa de Judá todo o mal que eu intento fazer-lhes; para que cada qual se converta do seu mau caminho, a fim de que eu perdoe a sua iniqüidade e o seu pecado.4 Então Jeremias chamou a Baruque, filho de Nerias; e escreveu Baruque, no rolo dum livro, enquanto Jeremias lhas ditava, todas as palavras que o Senhor lhe havia falado.5 E Jeremias deu ordem a Banique, dizendo: Eu estou impedido; não posso entrar na casa do Senhor.6 Entra pois tu e, pelo rolo que escreveste enquanto eu ditava, lê as palavras do Senhor aos ouvidos do povo, na casa do Senhor, no dia de jejum; e também as lerás aos ouvidos de todo o Judá que vem das suas cidades.7 Pode ser que caia a sua súplica diante do Senhor, e se converta cada um do seu mau caminho; pois grande é a ira e o furor que o Senhor tem manifestado contra este povo.8 E fez Baruque, filho de Nerias, conforme tudo quanto lhe havia ordenado Jeremias, o profeta, lendo no livro as palavras do Senhor na casa do Senhor.9 No quinto ano de Jeoiaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, no mês nono, todo o povo em Jerusalém, como também todo o povo que vinha das cidades de Judá a Jerusalém, apregoaram um jejum diante do Senhor.10 Leu, pois, Banique no livro as palavras de Jeremias, na casa do Senhor, na câmara de Gemarias, filho de Safã, o escriba, no átrio superior, à entrada da porta nova da casa do Senhor, aos ouvidos de todo o povo.11 E, ouvindo Micaías, filho de Gemarias, filho de Safã, todas as palavras do Senhor, naquele livro,12 desceu à casa do rei, à câmara do escriba. E eis que todos os príncipes estavam ali assentados: Elisama, o escriba, e Delaías, filho de Semaías, e Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e Gemarias, filho de Safã, e Zedequias, filho de Hananias, e todos os outros príncipes.13 E Micaías anunciou-lhes todas as palavras que ouvira, quando Baruque leu o livro aos ouvidos do povo.14 Então todos os príncipes mandaram Jeúdi, filho de Netanias, filho Selemias, filho de Cuche, a Baruque, para lhe dizer: O rolo que leste aos ouvidos do povo, toma-o na tua mão, e vem. E Banique, filho de Nerias, tomou o rolo na sua mão, e foi ter com eles.15 E disseram-lhe: Assenta-te agora, e lê-o aos nossos ouvidos. E Baruque o leu aos ouvidos deles.16 Ouvindo eles todas aquelas palavras, voltaram-se temerosos uns para os outros, e disseram a Banique: Sem dúvida alguma temos que anunciar ao rei todas estas palavras.17 E disseram a Baruque: Declara-nos agora como escreveste todas estas palavras. Ele as ditava?18 E disse-lhes Baruque: Sim, da sua boca ele me ditava todas estas palavras, e eu com tinta as escrevia no livro.19 Então disseram os príncipes a Banique: Vai, esconde-te tu e Jeremias; e ninguém saiba onde estais.20 E foram ter com o rei ao átrio; mas depositaram o rolo na câmara de Elisama, o escriba, e anunciaram aos ouvidos do rei todas aquelas palavras.21 Então enviou o rei a Jeúdi para trazer o rolo; e Jeúdi tomou-o da câmara de Elisama, o escriba, e o leu aos ouvidos do rei e aos ouvidos de todos os príncipes que estavam em torno do rei.22 Ora, era o nono mês e o rei estava assentado na casa de inverno, e diante dele estava um braseiro aceso.23 E havendo Jeúdi lido três ou quatro colunas, o rei as cortava com o canivete do escrivão, e as lançava no fogo que havia no braseiro, até que todo o rolo se consumiu no fogo que estava sobre o braseiro.24 E não temeram, nem rasgaram os seus vestidos, nem o rei nem nenhum dos seus servos que ouviram todas aquelas palavras25 e, posto que Elnatã, Delaías e Gema rias tivessem insistido com o rei que não queimasse o rolo, contudo ele não lhes deu ouvidos.26 Antes deu ordem o rei a Jerameel, filho do rei, e a Seraías, filho de Azriel, e a Selemias, filho de Abdeel, que prendessem a Baruque, o escrivão, e a Jeremias, o profeta; mas o Senhor os escondera.27 Depois que o rei queimara o rolo com as palavras que Banique escrevera da boca de Jeremias, veio a Jeremias a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:28 Toma ainda outro rolo, e escreve nele todas aquelas palavras que estavam no primeiro rolo, que Jeoiaquim, rei de Judá, queimou.29 E a Jeoiaquim, rei de Judá, dirás: Assim diz o Senhor: Tu queimaste este rolo, dizendo: Por que escreveste nele anunciando: Certamente virá o rei da Babilônia, e destruirá esta terra e fará cessar nela homens e animais?,30 Portanto assim diz o Senhor acerca de Jeoiaquim, rei de Judá: Não terá quem se assente sobre o trono de Davi, e será lançado o seu cadáver ao calor de dia, e à geada de noite.31 E castigá-lo-ei a ele, e a sua descendência e os seus servos, por causa da sua iniqüidade; e trarei sobre ele e sobre os moradores de Jerusalém, e sobre os homens de Judá, todo o mal que tenho pronunciado contra eles, e que não ouviram.32 Tomou, pois, Jeremias outro rolo, e o deu a Baruque, filho de Nerias, o escrivão, o qual escreveu nele, enquanto Jeremias ditava, todas as palavras do livro que Jeoiaquim, rei de Judá, tinha queimado no fogo; e ainda se lhes acrescentaram muitas palavras semelhantes.
