1 The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah. He was one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.2 Jehovah spoke his word to Jeremiah. This happened when King Josiah, son of Amon, was in his thirteenth year as king of Judah.3 Jehovah also spoke when Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, was king of Judah. It was during the eleven years that Zedekiah, another son of Josiah, was king of Judah. Jehovah continued to speak to Jeremiah until the people of Jerusalem were taken away into captivity in the fifth month of the year.4 Jehovah spoke his word to me, Jeremiah, He said:5 »Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart for my holy purpose. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.«6 I, Jeremiah, said: »Lord Jehovah, I do not know how to speak. I am only a child!«7 Jehovah said to me: »‘Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go wherever I send you. You must say whatever I command you to say.8 »Do not be afraid of people. I am with you. I will rescue you,« says Jehovah.9 Then Jehovah stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. Jehovah said to me: »I have put my words in your mouth.10 »Today I have appointed you in charge of nations and kingdoms. You will uproot and tear down. You will destroy and overthrow. You will build and plant.«11 Jehovah spoke his word to me again. He asked: »What do you see Jeremiah?« I answered: »I see a branch of an almond tree.«12 Jehovah said: »You are right. For I watch to make sure that my words come true.«13 Again Jehovah asked: »What do you see?« I answered: »I see a boiling pot, and its top is tilted away from the north.«14 Jehovah said to me: »Disaster will be poured out from the north on all those who live in the land.15 »I am going to call every family and kingdom from the north, says Jehovah. They will come, and they will set up their thrones at the entrance of Jerusalem's gates. They will attack all the walls around the city and all the cities of Judah.16 »I will pronounce judgment against my people because of all their wickedness. They abandoned me. They burned incense to other gods. They worshiped what their hands have made.17 »Strengthen yourself, Jeremiah! Stand up, and say to them whatever I tell you to say. Do not be terrified in their presence, or I will make you even more terrified in their presence.18 »Today I have made you like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a copper wall. You will be able to stand up to the whole land. You will be able to stand up to Judah's kings, its officials, its priests, and all the common people.19 »They will fight you but they will not defeat you. I am with you, and I will rescue you,« declares Jehovah.

1 As palavras de Jeremias, filho de Hilquias, um dos sacerdotes que estavam em Anatote, na terra de Benjamim;2 ao qual veio a palavra do Senhor, nos dias de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá, no décimo terceiro ano do seu reinado;3 e lhe veio também nos dias de Jeoiaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, até o fim do ano undécimo de Zedequias, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, até que Jerusalém foi levada em cativeiro no quinto mês.4 Ora veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:5 Antes que eu te formasse no ventre te conheci, e antes que saísses da madre te santifiquei; às nações te dei por profeta.6 Então disse eu: Ah, Senhor Deus! Eis que não sei falar; porque sou um menino.7 Mas o Senhor me respondeu: Não digas: Eu sou um menino; porque a todos a quem eu te enviar, irás; e tudo quanto te mandar dirás.8 Não temas diante deles; pois eu seu contigo para te livrar, diz o Senhor.9 Então estendeu o Senhor a mão, e tocou-me na boca; e disse-me o Senhor: Eis que ponho as minhas palavras na tua boca.10 Olha, ponho-te neste dia sobre as nações, e sobre os reinos, para arrancares e derribares, para destruíres e arruinares; e também para edificares e plantares.11 E veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo: Que é que vês, Jeremias? Eu respondi: Vejo uma vara de amendoeira.12 Então me disse o Senhor: Viste bem; porque eu velo sobre a minha palavra para a cumprir.13 Veio a mim a palavra do Senhor segunda vez, dizendo: Que é que vês? E eu disse: Vejo uma panela a ferver, que se apresenta da banda do norte.14 Ao que me disse o Senhor: Do norte se estenderá o mal sobre todos os habitantes da terra.15 Pois estou convocando todas as famílias dos reinos do norte, diz o Senhor; e, vindo, porá cada um o seu trono à entrada das portas de Jerusalém, e contra todos os seus muros em redor e contra todas as cidades de Judá.16 E pronunciarei contra eles os meus juízos, por causa de toda a sua malícia; pois me deixaram a mim, e queimaram incenso a deuses estranhos, e adoraram as obras das suas mãos.17 Tu, pois, cinge os teus lombos, e levanta-te, e dêem-lhes tudo quanto eu te ordenar; não desanimes diante deles, para que eu não te desanime diante deles.18 Eis que hoje te ponho como cidade fortificada, e como coluna de ferro e muros de bronze contra toda a terra, contra os reis de Judá, contra os seus príncipes, contra os seus sacerdotes, e contra o povo da terra.19 E eles pelejarão contra ti, mas não prevalecerão; porque eu sou contigo, diz o Senhor, para te livrar.
