1 Eliseu dirigia um grupo de profetas. Um dia eles lhe pediram:

— O lugar onde moramos com você é muito pequeno. 2 Dê licença para irmos até o rio Jordão a fim de cortar algumas árvores. Com elas construiremos uma casa para a gente morar.

— Podem ir! — respondeu Eliseu.

3 Um dos profetas insistiu que Eliseu fosse com eles. Eliseu aceitou, 4 e eles saíram juntos. Quando chegaram ao Jordão, começaram a trabalhar. 5 Um deles estava cortando uma árvore, quando, de repente, o ferro do seu machado escapou do cabo e caiu na água.

— O que vou fazer, senhor? — gritou ele para Eliseu. — O machado era emprestado!

6 — Onde foi que ele caiu? — perguntou Eliseu.

O homem mostrou o lugar. Então Eliseu cortou um pedaço de pau, jogou na água e fez o machado boiar.

7 — Pegue-o! — mandou ele.

E o homem esticou o braço e o pegou.

8 O rei da Síria estava em guerra contra Israel. Ele pediu conselho aos seus oficiais e escolheu um lugar para armar o seu acampamento. 9 Mas o profeta Eliseu mandou um recado ao rei de Israel, avisando-lhe que não fosse para perto daquele lugar, pois os sírios estavam ali esperando escondidos para atacá-lo. 10 Então o rei de Israel avisou os homens que moravam naquele lugar, e eles ficaram alerta.

Isso aconteceu várias vezes. 11 O rei da Síria ficou muito aborrecido; então chamou os seus oficiais e lhes perguntou:

— Qual de vocês está do lado do rei de Israel?

12 Um deles respondeu:

— Nenhum de nós, ó rei. O profeta Eliseu é quem conta ao rei de Israel tudo o que o senhor fala até mesmo dentro do seu próprio quarto.

13 Então o rei ordenou:

— Descubram onde ele está, que eu o prenderei.

Contaram-lhe que Eliseu estava em Dotã, 14 e ele mandou para lá uma grande tropa de soldados com cavalos e carros de guerra. Eles chegaram de noite à cidade e a cercaram. 15 No dia seguinte cedinho, o empregado de Eliseu levantou-se e saiu de casa. Aí viu as tropas sírias com os seus cavalos e carros de guerra, cercando a cidade. Então entrou em casa e disse a Eliseu:

— Senhor, nós estamos perdidos! O que vamos fazer?

16 Eliseu disse:

— Não tenha medo, pois aqueles que estão conosco são mais numerosos do que os que estão com eles.

17 Então orou assim:

— Ó Senhor Deus, abre os olhos do meu empregado e deixa que ele veja!

Deus respondeu à oração dele. Aí o empregado de Eliseu olhou para cima e viu que ao redor de Eliseu o morro estava coberto de cavalos e carros de fogo.

18 Quando os sírios atacaram, Eliseu orou assim:

— Ó Senhor Deus, faze com que esses homens fiquem cegos!

Deus respondeu à oração de Eliseu e fez com que os sírios ficassem cegos. 19 Então Eliseu foi falar com eles e disse:

— Vocês estão no caminho errado; esta cidade não é a que estão procurando. Venham comigo, que eu vou levar vocês até o homem que estão procurando.

E os guiou até a cidade de Samaria.

20 Logo que eles entraram na cidade, Eliseu orou assim:

— Ó Senhor Deus, abre os olhos deles e deixa que eles vejam.

Então Deus fez com que os sírios enxergassem de novo, e eles viram que estavam dentro da cidade de Samaria.

21 Quando o rei de Israel viu os sírios, perguntou a Eliseu:

— Devo matá-los, senhor? Devo matá-los?

22 — Não! De jeito nenhum! — respondeu ele. — Por acaso, o senhor mata os soldados que são feitos prisioneiros na guerra? Dê de comer e de beber a estes aqui e deixe que voltem para o rei deles.

23 Então o rei de Israel mandou fazer uma grande festa para aqueles sírios. E, depois que comeram e beberam, ele os mandou de volta para o rei da Síria. Daí em diante os sírios pararam de atacar a terra de Israel.

24 Algum tempo depois, o rei Ben-Hadade, da Síria, levou todo o seu exército para lutar contra Israel e cercou a cidade de Samaria. 25 Por causa disso, a falta de alimentos naquela cidade foi tão grande, que uma cabeça de jumento custava oitenta barras de prata, e duzentos gramas de esterco de pomba custavam cinco barras de prata.

26 Certo dia o rei de Israel estava passando por cima da muralha da cidade, quando uma mulher gritou para ele:

— Ó rei, meu senhor, me ajude!

27 Ele respondeu:

— Se o Senhor Deus não ajudar você, como é que eu posso ajudá-la? Você pensa que eu tenho trigo ou vinho? 28 Mas diga qual é o seu problema.

Ela respondeu:

— Outro dia esta mulher me disse: "Vamos comer o seu filho hoje e amanhã comeremos o meu." 29 Então nós cozinhamos o meu filho e o comemos. No dia seguinte eu disse que era a vez de comermos o filho dela, mas ela o escondeu!

30 Ao ouvir isso, o rei rasgou as suas roupas em sinal de desgosto, e as pessoas que estavam perto da muralha viram que por baixo das suas roupas ele estava vestido com roupa de pano grosseiro.

31 E o rei gritou:

— Que Deus me mate se, antes que o dia acabe, eu não mandar cortar a cabeça de Eliseu, filho da Safate!

32 E mandou que um mensageiro fosse buscá-lo.

Enquanto isso, Eliseu estava em casa com alguns líderes do povo que haviam ido visitá-lo. Antes que o mensageiro do rei chegasse, Eliseu disse aos líderes:

— Aquele assassino está mandando alguém para me matar. Por isso, quando ele chegar, fechem a porta e não deixem que entre. O próprio rei virá logo depois dele.

33 Eliseu ainda estava falando com eles, quando o rei chegou e disse:

— Foi o Senhor Deus quem fez cair toda esta desgraça sobre nós. Por que iria eu ficar mais tempo esperando que ele fizesse alguma coisa?

1 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha,See, we pray thee, the place wherein we sit before thee, is too strait for us.

2 Let us go, we pray thee, as far as the Jordan, and fetch from thence every man a single beam, and let us make us a place wherein we may sit. And he saidGo ye.

3 Then said oneBe content, we pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he saidI myself, will go.

4 So he went with them,and, when they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.

5 And it came to pass, as one was felling a branch, that, the axe-head, fell into the water, so he made outcry and saidAlas! my lord, for, it, was borrowed!

6 And the man of God saidWhere fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a piece of wood and cast it in thither, and the iron did swim.

7 And he saidTake it up to thee. So he put forth his hand, and took it.

8 Now, the king of Syria, was making war against Israel,so he took counsel with his servants, sayingIn such and such a place, shall be my encampment.

9 The man of God, therefore, sent unto the king of Israel, sayingBeware of passing by this place,for, thither, are the Syrians coming down.

10 So the king of Israel sent unto the place whereof the man of God had spoken to him and warned him, and was on his guard there,not once nor twice

11 Then was the heart of the king of Syria disquieted concerning this thing,and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not tell me, who of our men are for the king of Israel?

12 Then said one of his servants, None, my lord O king,but, Elisha, the prophet, who is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words which thou speakest in thy bed-chamber.

13 And he saidGo, and see where he is, that I may send and take him. And it was told him, sayingLo! in Dothan.

14 Therefore sent he thitherhorses and chariots, and a strong force,and they came in by night, and encompassed the city.

15 And, when the attendant of the man of God arose early and went forth, lo! a force surrounding the city, with horses and chariots. Then said his young man unto himAlas! my lord, what shall we do?

16 And he saidDo not fear,for, more, are, they who are with us, than, they who are with them.

17 Then prayed Elisha, and said, O Yahweh! open, I beseech thee, his eyes, that he may see. And Yahweh opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and lo! the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.

18 And, when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto Yahweh, and saidSmite, I beseech thee, this people, with sudden blindness. And he smote them with sudden blindness, according to the word of Elisha.

19 Then Elisha said unto themThis, is not the way, neither is, this, the city, follow me, that I may lead you unto the man, whom ye would secure! So he led them to Samaria.

20 And it came to pass, when they had entered Samaria, that Elisha said, O Yahweh! open the eyes of these men, that they may see! And Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw, and lo! they were in the midst of Samaria!

21 Then said the king of Israel unto Elisha, when he saw them,Shall I smiteshall I smite, my father?

22 And he saidThou shalt not smite. Them whom thou hadst taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow, wouldst, thou, have been smiting? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go their way unto their lord.

23 And he made for them a great feast, and, when they had eaten and drunk, he let them go, and they went their way unto their lord. So then, troops of Syrians came again, no more, into the land of Israel.

24 But it came to pass, after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered together all his host,and came up and laid siege against Samaria.

25 And there came to be, a great famine, in Samaria, and lo! they continued the siege against it,until an asss head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and one pint of doves dung for five pieces of silver.

26 And so it was that, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman, made outcry unto him, sayingSave, my lord, O king!

27 And he saidIf Yahweh do not save thee, whence should I save thee? out of the threshing-floor or out of the wine-press?

28 And the king said to herWhat aileth thee? And she saidThis woman, said unto meGive thy son, that we may eat him, to-day, and, my son, will we eat to-morrow.

29 So we cooked my son, and did eat him,and I said unto her, on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; But she had hid her son.

30 And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes, while yet he was passing by upon the wall,so the people looked, and lo! sackcloth upon his flesh, within.

31 And he saidSo, let God do to me, and, so, let him add,if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remain on him, to-day!

32 Now, Elisha, being seated in his house, and, the elders, seated with him,when he had sent a man from before him, ere yet the messenger could come in unto him, he himself, said unto the eldersDo ye see how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away my head? See! when the messenger is coming in, close ye the door, and press him back with the door, is not the sound of his lords feet behind him?

33 While yet he was speaking with them, lo! the messenger, coming down unto him,and he said,Lo! this, is a calamity from Yahweh, why should I wait for Yahweh, any longer?
