Prólogo

1 Na terra de Uz, vivia um homem chamado Jó. Era homem íntegro e justo; temia a Deus e evitava fazer o mal. 2 Ele tinha sete filhos e três filhas. 3 Possuía sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois e quinhentas jumentas; além disso, tinha muita gente a seu serviço. Era o homem mais importante do oriente.

4 Os seus filhos costumavam dar banquetes em casa, um de cada vez, e convidavam as suas três irmãs para comerem e beberem com eles. 5 Terminado um período de banquetes, Jó mandava chamá-los e os purificava. De madrugada, ele oferecia um holocausto*1.5 Isto é, sacrifício totalmente queimado. em favor de cada um deles, pois pensava: "Talvez os meus filhos tenham, em seu coração, pecado e amaldiçoado Deus". Esta era a prática constante de Jó.

A primeira provação de Jó

6 Certo dia, os anjos*1.6 Hebraico: os filhos de Deus. vieram apresentar-se ao Senhor, e Satanás*1.6 Satanás significa adversário ou acusador; também nos versículos 7, 8, 9 e 12. também veio entre eles. 7 O Senhor perguntou a Satanás:

— De onde você veio?

Satanás respondeu ao Senhor:

— De perambular pela terra e andar por ela.

8 Então, o Senhor disse a Satanás:

— Reparou no meu servo Jó? Não há ninguém na terra como ele: um homem íntegro e justo, que teme a Deus e evita fazer o mal.

9 Satanás respondeu:

— Será que Jó não tem razões para temer a Deus? 10 Acaso tu mesmo não puseste uma cerca em volta dele, da casa dele e de tudo o que ele possui? Tens abençoado tudo o que ele faz, de modo que os seus rebanhos estão espalhados por toda a terra. 11 Estende, porém, a mão e fere tudo o que ele tem, e com certeza ele te amaldiçoará na tua face!

12 O Senhor disse a Satanás:

— Pois bem, tudo o que ele possui está nas suas mãos; apenas não toque diretamente nele.

Então, Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor.

13 Certo dia, quando os filhos e as filhas de Jó estavam em um banquete, comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho, 14 um mensageiro veio dizer a Jó:

— Os bois estavam arando, e os jumentos pastavam por perto, 15 quando os sabeus os atacaram e os levaram embora. Mataram à espada os empregados, e eu fui o único que escapou para lhe contar!

16 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, chegou outro mensageiro e disse:

— Fogo de Deus caiu do céu e queimou totalmente as ovelhas e os empregados, e eu fui o único que escapou para lhe contar!

17 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, chegou outro mensageiro e disse:

— Os caldeus vieram em três bandos, atacaram os camelos e os levaram embora. Mataram à espada os empregados, e eu fui o único que escapou para lhe contar!

18 Enquanto ele ainda estava falando, chegou outro mensageiro e disse:

— Os seus filhos e as suas filhas estavam em um banquete, comendo e bebendo vinho na casa do irmão mais velho, 19 quando, de repente, um vento muito forte veio do deserto e atingiu os quatro cantos da casa, que desabou sobre eles. Todos morreram, e eu fui o único que escapou para lhe contar!

20 Ao ouvir isso, Jó levantou-se, rasgou o manto e rapou a cabeça. Então, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra em adoração 21 e disse:

"Nu saí do ventre da minha mãe

e nu partirei.*1.21 Ou nu voltarei para lá.

O Senhor o deu, o Senhor o levou;

louvado seja o nome do Senhor".

22 Em tudo isso, Jó não pecou nem culpou Deus de coisa alguma.

Prologue

1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job’s regular custom.

6 One day the angels*1:6 Hebrew the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan*1:6 Hebrew satan means adversary. also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"

Satan answered the Lord, "From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it."

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

12 The Lord said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

"Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

and naked I will depart.*1:21 Or will return there

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;

may the name of the Lord be praised."

22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
