1 Estas são as palavras de Jeremias, filho de Hilquias, um dos sacerdotes da cidade de Anatote, na terra de Benjamim. 2 O Senhor lhe deu esta mensagem no décimo terceiro ano do reinado de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá.*1.2 Isto é, no ano 627 a.C. 3 Também lhe deu outras mensagens durante todo o reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, até o décimo primeiro ano do reinado de Zedequias, outro filho de Josias. Em agosto daquele ano,*1.3 Em hebraico, No quinto mês, do antigo calendário lunar hebraico. Vários acontecimentos de Jeremias podem ser comparados com datas de registros babilônios ainda existentes e relacionados com precisão ao calendário moderno. O quinto mês caiu entre agosto e setembro de 586 a.C. o povo de Jerusalém foi levado para o exílio.

4 O Senhor me deu esta mensagem:

5 "Eu o conheci antes de formá-lo no ventre de sua mãe;

antes de você nascer, eu o separei

e o nomeei para ser meu profeta às nações".

6 Então eu disse: "Ó Soberano Senhor, não sou capaz de falar em teu nome! Sou jovem demais para isso!".

7 O Senhor respondeu: "Não diga: ‘Sou jovem demais’, pois você irá aonde eu o enviar e dirá o que eu lhe ordenar. 8 E não tenha medo do povo, pois estarei com você e o protegerei. Eu, o Senhor, falei!". 9 Então o Senhor estendeu a mão, tocou minha boca e disse:

"Veja, coloquei minhas palavras em sua boca!

10 Hoje lhe dou autoridade para enfrentar nações e reinos,

para arrancar e derrubar,

para destruir e arrasar,

para edificar e plantar".

11 Então o Senhor me disse: "O que você vê, Jeremias?".

Eu respondi: "Vejo o ramo de uma amendoeira".

12 "Você viu bem", disse o Senhor. "Isso significa que estou vigiando*1.12 Os termos hebraicos para "vigiar" (shoqed) e "amendoeira" (shaqed) têm sonoridade semelhante. e certamente realizarei todos os meus planos."

13 Então o Senhor falou comigo outra vez e perguntou: "O que vê agora?".

Respondi: "Vejo uma panela fervendo, derramando-se do norte para cá".

14 O Senhor disse: "Terror vindo do norte ferverá e se derramará sobre o povo desta terra. 15 Ouça! Estou convocando todos os exércitos dos reinos do norte. Eu, o Senhor, falei!

"Eles colocarão seus tronos

junto aos portões de Jerusalém.

Atacarão seus muros

e todas as outras cidades de Judá.

16 Pronunciarei julgamento

contra meu povo por toda a sua maldade,

por terem me abandonado e queimado incenso para outros deuses;

adoram ídolos que fizeram com as próprias mãos!

17 "Levante-se e prepare-se para agir;

diga-lhes tudo que eu ordenar.

Não tenha medo deles,

senão o farei parecer medroso diante deles.

18 Pois hoje eu o fortaleci como uma cidade fortificada,

como uma coluna de ferro ou um muro de bronze.

Você enfrentará toda esta terra:

os reis, os oficiais, os sacerdotes e o povo de Judá.

19 Eles lutarão contra você, mas não vencerão,

pois estou com você e o protegerei.

Eu, o Senhor, falei!".

1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2 To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.*1.5 ordained: Heb. gave 6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

7 But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. 8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. 9 Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. 10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

11 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. 12 Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it. 13 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.*1.13 toward…: Heb. from the face of the north 14 Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.*1.14 shall…: Heb. shall be opened 15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. 16 And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.

17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.*1.17 confound: or, break to pieces 18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. 19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
